Team Appalachian State University softball enters year two under the leadership of head coach Janice Savage and as a member of the nine-team Sun Belt Conference. The first season with Savage at the helm resulted in an overall mark of 14-35 including a 1-22 record within league play. Gone from that squad are four of the team’s top five hitters including Cynthia Gomez (.320), second team all-Sun Belt pick Sarah Warnock (.318), Dani Heichen (.312), and Caroline Chambers (.289). The Mountaineers also lost one of the best pitchers the program has ever seen in Alissa Schoelkopf. When looking at the career record book, Schoelkopf was among the top 10 in several categories including strikeouts (second), wins (third), appear-ances (fourth), and innings pitched (fifth). With that being said, the 2016 edition of the Black and Gold will feature nine returners as well as 10 freshmen. Savage welcomed a new assistant coach to her staff in Staci Ramsey, who will replace Hannah Fulk and coach alongside second-year assistant coach, Jordan Reid. Ramsey, a 2007 graduate of the University of Alabama and native of Houston, Texas, comes to the High Country after spending two seasons as an assistant at Massachu-setts. During her tenure there, she helped lead the Minutewomen to an overall record of 31-50-1 and an Atlantic 10 mark of 17-19-1. As a player for the Crimson Tide, Ramsey appeared in 269 games in her career and started 262 of them - both of which rank in Alabama’s all-time top 10. She hit .296 in her career with 47 doubles, 32 home runs and 175 RBI, placing in the top 10 in the final three categories. Her five postseason home runs are the third-highest total in program history and she is the Tide’s career record holder in assists with 519. The team’s top three returners for this season will be Tiffany Taynor, Heather Josey and Haley Stewart, all of which enter their sophomore campaigns. Of the top five batting averages from last season’s team mentioned above, Taynor’s .294 is the one returning. She appeared in 30 games (27 starts) last season at both third base and in the outfield. Josey was one of only three Mountaineers to appear in all 49 games and she made starts in 47 of them (first base/designated player). She tallied two hits in 10 different games and registered a five-game hitting streak from April 11-18. Stewart only played and started 20 games due to an in-jury cutting her season short, most of which came at first base. Last season, she tallied a season-high two hits on three occasions in-cluding a 2-for-4 game on Feb. 28 vs. Austin

Peay. The other three returning starters include juniors Cara Parker and Vanessa Ci-ocatto, as well as senior Pepper Butler. As a sophomore, Parker didn’t see the amount of success that her freshman season produced. In her second go around as a Mountaineer, the Lake Park, Ga. native appeared and started in 48 games (shortstop) with a .246 batting average that included 30 hits in 122 at-bats. Ciocatto logged the most innings of any 2015 Appalachian pitcher with 100.1 in her first season of action since transferring over from Delaware State. In those 100.1 innings of action, Ciocatto threw two com-plete games, tallied four wins and struck out 55 batters. Butler is one of two seniors on this season’s team along with redshirt-senior Katherine Johnson. Last season, Butler played in 47 games with 46 starts (outfield) and turned in a batting average of .233, which included 27 hits, six home runs and 20 RBI in 116 at-bats. The final three letterwinners returning for 2016 will be sophomore Katie Williford, junior Katie Mathewson and the aforemen-tioned Johnson. Williford made 25 appear-ances in the circle including 10 starts, 53.2 innings and a record of 4-7. Johnson made 31 appearances with 11 starts, 67.1 innings and a 3-10 mark. Mathewson appeared in 26 games (first base/designated hitter/pinch hitter), including 14 starts, with a .125 bat-ting average (6-for-48). The 10 freshmen for 2016 include four infielders, four outfielders and two pitch-ers. Those four playing in the infield will be Jenny Dodd, Monica Joseph, Ally Walters, and Natalie Orcutt. The outfielders include Maddy Bloom, Casey Brescia, Mallory Choplin, and Megan Walker. The two pitch-ing rookies are Claire Eosso and Annaleise Kennedy.

Schedule The Mountaineers will play 18 games at Sywassink/Lloyd Family Stadium, which will begin with a doubleheader against Campbell (March 16) and conclude with a three-game weekend set against Texas State (April 30-May 1). Other non-conference teams coming to the High Country include Radford for a Wednesday doubleheader (April 6) and North Carolina A&T for a twinbill two weeks later (April 27). App State travels to UNCG for two (March 9), Charlotte for one (April 20 and North Carolina Central for two (May 7). Appalachian will open its season at No. 4 Auburn (56-11/NCAA Super Regionals/No. 3 in final USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll in 2015) on Feb. 11 before the Tigers’ annual Plainsman Invite (Feb. 12-14) with matchups against Butler, Western Kentucky (program-best 36-14/NCAA Regionals/received votes in final poll of 2015), Furman, and Auburn. The Apps will also travel to tourna-ments hosted by Coastal Carolina (Feb. 19-21), Winthrop (Feb. 26-28) and Campbell (March 4-5). When it comes to Sun Belt Conference play, Appalachian State will host Troy (March 19-20), South Alabama who was tied for 23rd in the final 2015 poll (March 25-26), Georgia State (April 16-17), and Texas State (April 30-May 1), and travel to UL Monroe (March 12-13), UT Arlington (April 2-3), Geor-gia Southern (April 9-10), and UL Lafayette (April 23-24) who was No. 11 in the final 2015 poll.

HEAD COACH JANICE SAVAGE

JANICE

SAVAGEHEAD COACHSECOND SEASONDELAWARE STATE, 2005 Janice Savage, a 10-year coaching veteran that served as the head coach at Delaware State University in 2013 and 2014, was named the fourth head coach in Appala-chian State University softball history on July 11, 2014. She now enters her second season at the helm of the Mountaineers in 2016. In her first season in the High Country, App State finished the spring with an overall record of 14-35. 2015 marked the Apps inau-gural season in the Sun Belt Conference and they finished with a league mark of 1-22. Among those 14 wins, the Black and Gold defeated UNC for the first time in program history (0-7 previously) with a 4-3 decision on Feb. 13 and beat Pittsburgh a week later by a score of 5-2. Individually, catcher Sarah Warnock was named second team all-Sun Belt after hitting .318 with nine doubles, five home runs and 30 RBI to cap a brilliant Mountaineer career. After her second season as the head coach at Delaware State, Savage was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after leading her team, whose starting lineup was comprised of seven sophomores and three freshmen, to the MEAC North Division title and a third-place finish at the conference tournament. The Hornets finished 35-17 overall in 2014 with a 15-3 record in league play and led the MEAC in virtually every statistical category, including winning percentage (.673), batting average (.321), ERA (2.12) and fielding percentage (.957). DSU also ranked among the top 75 nationally in batting aver-age (16th), ERA (25th), winning percentage (41st), double plays turned per game (47th), scoring (64th) and slugging percentage (75th). Individually, she coached the MEAC’s Rookie of the Year and four players that earned all-conference recognition, including three first-teamers. Off the field, her team put together a 3.54 cumulative GPA in the 2013 fall semester, which was the highest team GPA among Delaware State’s 15 varsity programs, while 13 of her 15 student-athletes maintain a cumulative of 3.0 or higher. The program also had a perfect NCAA Academic Progress Rate score of 1,000 for the year.

Serving as the interim head coach at DSU in 2013, she led the Hornets to a 22-35 overall record and a 12-6 mark in confer-ence play, good for third place in the MEAC’s North Division. Prior to becoming a head coach, Savage spent seven as an assistant coach, including two stints at Delaware State (2006-08, 2011-12) and a year each at Bowling Green (2009) and North Florida (2010). She served as the pitching coach in her first term at Delaware State and at BGSU and UNF before assuming a more comprehensive role as the top assistant when she returned for her second stint at DSU. As an assistant at Delaware State in 2008, she helped lead the Hornets to the MEAC championship and first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. In the opening round of the Austin Regional, DSU were five outs away from upsetting host Texas before drop-ping a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to the Longhorns. Savage also starred as a softball student-athlete at Delaware State, where she was a pitcher from 2004-05. Despite playing just the final two seasons of her collegiate career at DSU, she is the school’s all-time leader in career strikeouts (323) and also owns program records for single-season (185) and single-game (17) strikeouts. She was a first-team all-MEAC and all-ECAC honoree, as well as a two-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association academic all-American and two-time MEAC Commis-sioner’s Award winner. She began her collegiate career at Appalachian State’s longtime conference rival Georgia Southern, where she earned all-Southern Conference recognition. Following the end of her collegiate ca-reer, Savage played one season profession-

ally for Team Axia of the Italian Women’s Pro-fessional Softball League, becoming the first female student-athlete from Delaware State to ever sign a professional sports contract. She was inducted into the Delaware State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2012. Savage earned two degrees from DSU, a bachelor’s in sports management (2005) and a master’s in sports administration (2009). She has two children, Jada and Colton.

JORDAN

REIDASSISTANT COACHSECOND SEASON/DELAWARE STATE, 2012

ASSISTANT COACHES

Jordan Reid enters her second season as a part of Janice Savage’s Appala-chian State softball staff for the 2016 season. A native of Accokeek, Md., Reid came to Appalachian State after being a member of the Delaware State coaching staff under current head coach Janice Savage for both the 2013 and 2014 seasons. Her duties included focusing on all aspects of the program with an emphasis on outfield play, hitting development and assisting with day-to-day operations. During those two years, Reid helped Savage go from a 22-35 overall record in the first season to a mark of 35-17 in year two. Delaware State’s combined record in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for those two seasons was 27-9. Reid also earned a master’s degree in sports administration from Delaware State in 2015. Prior to becoming a coach, Reid was a standout player for the Hornets as an outfielder/second baseman from 2009-12. There, she became the first Hornet ever to earn Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Mid Atlantic First Team honors in 2011 after being named to the second team in 2010. She was also the first Hornet ever to be named MEAC Player of the Year in three-straight seasons (2010-12). During the 2011 season, she finished with the second highest batting average in the country at .497. During her time on the field, Reid was also an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I All-Star, a Lowe’s Senior Class Award nominee and a two-time Delaware State University Female Student-Athlete of the Year. In 2012, Reid helped lead the Hornets to a 25-18-1 overall record and those 18 losses were the fewest in DSU history since 1994 when the Hornets were 18-10. From year to year, once Reid became a full-time starter, she im-mediately showed results. Reid hit .241 as a freshman, .456 as a sophomore, .497 as a junior and .420 as a senior. Reid graduated from Delaware State in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

During her tenure there, she helped lead the Minutewomen to an overall record of 31-50-1 including an Atlantic 10 mark of 17-19-1. The Houston, Texas native has also had assistant coaching stints at Ste-phen F. Austin (2011-12), Mississippi (2009-10), Charleston Southern (2008), and Alabama as a student assistant in 2007. As a member of the Crimson Tide, Ramsey appeared in 269 games in her career and started 262 of them - both of which rank in Alabama’s all-time top 10. She hit .296 in her career with 47 doubles, 32 home runs and 175 RBIs, placing in the top 10 in the final three categories. Her five postseason home runs are the third-highest total in program history and she is the Tide’s career record holder in assists with 519. DOUG GILLINDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSFIRST YEAR AT APPALACHIAN STATEALMA MATER: SUNY CORTLAND, 1991

Doug Gillin was named director of athletics at Appalachian State Univer-sity on Feb. 27, 2015. He officially began in the role on April 6, 2015. Gillin, 46, possesses more than two decades of professional experience in collegiate athletics, most recently as deputy director of athletics at the Uni-versity of Missouri. He spent three years at Missouri and played a prominent role in the Tigers’ transition to the Southeastern Conference. At Mizzou, Gillin was involved in all facets of the athletics department’s financial planning and budget development, was a member of the depart-ment’s strategic plan development team and oversaw all external opera-tions, including the Tiger Scholarship Fund development unit, Mizzou Sports Properties, strategic communications and game operations. Most notably, he helped lead the University’s athletics capital campaign and was involved in a $102 million facilities enhancement plan for football, baseball, softball, golf, tennis and track and field. Additionally, he was responsible for all facets of Missouri’s day-to-day operations in the absence of the athletics director, had direct oversight over men’s basketball and was part of a three-person administrative team that oversaw the Tigers’ football program. Prior to his arrival at Missouri in 2012, Gillin spent a decade in North Carolina in various roles with ISP Sports/IMG College, the country’s leading collegiate multimedia, marketing and licensing/brand management com-pany. During his 10-year stint with Winston-Salem-based ISP/IMG, he served as the company’s senior vice president (2002-07), executive vice president/chief sales officer (2007-10) and senior vice president for college properties (2010-12). In those roles, he managed the company’s entire sales force, which included approximately 350 employees and more than 90 university and conference partnerships. Before joining the ISP/IMG corporate headquarters, Gillin spent the first nine years of his athletics career on college campuses. He began as an as-sistant ticketing/business office director at Lehigh (1993-94) then served as an assistant marketing director at New Mexico (1994-95) and Missouri (1995-97). In 1997, he became the general manager of Mizzou Sports Properties before taking the same position with Syracuse Sports Properties in 1999. The Binghamton, N.Y. native was a four-year letterwinner in ice hockey at SUNY Cortland from 1987-91. He was a two-time team MVP and was se-lected as the squad’s co-captain in 1990. He graduated from SUNY Cortland in 1991 with a B.S. in physical education (sports management concentra-tion).

He went on to earn a master’s degree in physical education from Ohio University in 1993. GIllin and his wife, Leslie, have three children: daughters Shea and Lia and son Chase.

Appalachian State University is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Boone, N.C. At an elevation of 3,333 feet, Boone began as a frontier outpost named after pioneer Daniel Boone, who first explored the area in the 1760s. Boone now at-tracts those seeking a breathtaking location, adventure and a quality education. Appalachian is one of the 17 institutions in the University of North Carolina system and offers a challenging learning experience. The university combines a small-town atmosphere with a strong academic reputation. Appalachian’s academics are supported by an accomplished faculty, close, personal interaction between students and faculty, and intimate class sizes that average 26 students. Originally founded as a teachers college, Appalachian now cultivates leaders in business, science, the arts, communication, music, nursing, education and other careers. Innovation and creativity are hallmarks of Appalachian graduates, who are leaders in communities in North Carolina and around the world. Ap-palachian also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and service to com-munities, both locally and globally. Today, Appalachian is a leader in the fields of energy-focused sustainable technology and the health sciences. Consistently ranked among U.S. News and World Report’s best public universi-ties in the Southeast, Appalachian is also noted as a “best value” by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and other publications. Appalachian’s 410-acre main campus includes 22 academic buildings, a 210,000-square-foot library, 19 residence halls, three dining facilities and 11 recre-ational and athletic facilities. Appalachian also operates a living-learning center in New York City and off-campus programs in 10 counties through collaboration with area community colleges.

ATHLETICS EXCELLENCE More than 450 student-athletes compete in 20 NCAA Division 1 varsity sports at Appalachian State University, 10 for men and 10 for women. Appalachian was a dominant force in the Southern Conference for more than 40 years before joining the Sun Belt Conference in July 2014 – one of 10 conferences that are members of the Division 1 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). Appalachian student-athletes work just as hard in the classroom: • * In May 2015, Appalachian athletics was awarded the Sun Belt’s 2015 Institu-tional Graduation Rate Award for 2013-14. The award is given to the school with the highest Federal Graduation Rate among all current Sun Belt members. • * 101 Appalachian student-athletes were named to the Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List in fall 2014, an honor given to student-athletes with a GPA of 3.5 or higher. • * 109 Appalachian student-athletes were named to the Sun Belt’s Academic Honor Roll in fall 2014, an honor given to student-athletes with a GPA of 3.0-3.49. • * 210 student-athletes were awarded academic honors, making Appalachian the school with the most students to do so.

APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS MISSION STATEMENT The Department of Athletics at Appalachian State University believes in maintaining the intercollegiate athletics program as an integral part of the University’s overall program of education, with emphasis on and priority given to high academic quality and standards and the complete development of the student. Appalachian State University provides opportunity and encouragement for student-athletes to progress toward degrees of their choice and to develop athletic abilities in an environment consistent with high standards of academic scholarship, leadership and institu-tional loyalty. The Department of Athletics is committed to ensuring the general welfare of the student-athlete and to encouraging the highest standards of sportsmanship on behalf of student-athletes, the student body and the University’s supporters. The intercollegiate athlete representing Appalachian is both a bona-fide student pursuing a degree program and an amateur competitor. Appalachian Athletics is committed to insuring equitable recruitment, participation and treatment of individuals including members of under-represented populations through its

athletics administration, staff, coaches, programs and policies. The University’s policy of non-discrimination represents a moral and ethical, not merely a legal, imperative. The University has determined that its athletics program will meet the necessary qualifica-tions, guidelines and funding to hold membership in Division I of the NCAA. The athletics administration, the faculty athletics representative and the Athletics Council work together to insure that all teams and coaches follow the rules and regulations governing this division. A sound program of intercollegiate athletics should benefit the institution through its ef-fects on students, alumni ad the institution itself. Specifically, it should maintain and improve the loyalty and esprit de corps of the student body, and in strengthening the pride and enthu-siasm of the alumni; it should serve as a favorable public relations factor and provide benefits to the participants.APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS DIVERSITY STATEMENT Appalachian athletics promotes an inclusive culture that fosters equitable participation for student-athletes and equitable career opportunities for coaches, administrators and support staff from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Boone lies in a small valley in the heart of the Southern Appalachians. It is named after the hunter and explorer Daniel Boone, who spent time in the region during the 1760s. Watauga County was formed in 1849 and the Town of Boone incorporated in 1872. Boone’s accolades include National Geographic Adventure magazine’s “Best Places to Live and Play,” Outside magazine’s top 10 “Best Towns in America,” USA Today’s “10 Great Small Towns with Huge Backyards,” ”U.S. News and World Report’s “10 Best Places to Retire in the U.S.” and TripAdvisor’s “Hidden Gems: 13 U.S. Towns That Are Diamonds in the Rough.” Boone is also ranked the 10th safest place in North Carolina by Movoto.com and 19th in SafeWise.com’s “50 Safest Cities in North Carolina,” based on the latest FBI crime report data. Boone is a college town, home to Appalachian State University. Originally Watauga Academy, the institution was formed to educate the mountain children and to ultimately prepare teachers for service through western North Carolina. It became Appalachian State Teachers College in 1929 and joined the University of North Carolina system in 1971. The university serves as a top economic driver followed by a combination of tourism, small business and residential home construction. The Boone area is characterized by mountain culture and casual living. Outdoor activities, cultural events, local dining and unique shops attract visitors from all over the world year-round. From breathtaking scenic views to Boone’s eclectic downtown area, known as King Street, there is something for everyone. One of the highlights of downtown Boone is the university’s Turchin Center for the Visual Arts. It features six gallery spaces and a community education and outreach program. Its exhibitions focus on a blend of recent and historically important artwork and feature nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as many of the finest artists of the region. A wide array of quality arts and cultural events enhance the Boone community. The university’s month-long celebration of performing and visual arts, known as An Appalachian Summer Festival, has brought notable performers such as Paul Taylor Dance Company, London City Opera, Charlie Daniels and the Glenn Miller Orches-tra. During the academic year, Appalachian hosts the Performing Arts Series with artists such as Garrison Keillor and the National Symphony Orchestra. Boone offers an uncommon quality of life – that’s why many visitors come for a weekend and stay for a lifetime.

ABOUT APPALACHIANAppalachian State University prepares students to lead purposeful lives as engaged global citizens who understand their responsibili-

ties in creating a sustainable future for all. The transformational Appalachian experience promotes a spirit of inclusion that brings

people together in inspiring ways to acquire and create knowledge, to grow holistically, to act with passion and determination, and em-brace diversity and difference. Our students become agile learners who think critically, communicate effectively, make local to global

connections, and understand the responsibilities of community en-gagement. We embrace our obligation to help create healthy, just,

and sustainable societies by equipping our students to live with knowledge, compassion, dedication, humility, and dignity.

MORE THAN A LOCATIONAppalachian’s beautiful setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains is more

than a location – it profoundly shapes how our community lives, works and learns together. Our commitment to sustainability is a

tradition, not a trend, and Appalachian is an active steward of North Carolina’s interconnected financial, cultural and natural resources. This commitment shows in many ways, including our tuition rates, textbook rental program, commitment to energy efficiency, eco-

nomic viability and equitable citizenship. Because of this and much more, Appalachian ranks No. 7 out of 592 schools in MyPlan.com’s student rankings for “Overall Satisfaction & Happiness with Choice.”

Dr. Sheri Noren Everts serves as Appalachian’s chancellor. Dr. Darrell Kruger is provost and executive vice chancellor. The university is

governed by the university’s Board of Trustees and the University of North Carolina system’s Board of Governors.
