60 YEARS AND GOING STRONGSINCE 1954, BELL HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO PROVIDING PURPOSE-BUILT PROTECTION ACROSS A RANGE OF POTENTIAL CRASH SCENARIOS. This comprehensive testing approach is founded in the reality of the ride; that no two impacts are alike. With that reality, came the Bell Standard—a testing standard born from decades of helmet expertise and our state-of-the-art test lab inside The Dome. The Bell Standard represents Bell’s commitment to protection across the board, enabling athletes to go big with confidence.

LINEAR ACCELERATIONUsing a twin-wire set up and measuring Severity Index, HIC and peak g with a linear accelerometer and velocity time gate, we are able to “drop test” helmets onto varying surfaces prescribed by governing standards and our own comprehensive testing methods.

ROTATIONAL ACCELERATIONWe can now test by varying the speed, weight and angle of attack for an instrumented dummy to collide into a textured surface, simulating typical crash mechanics.

HOW DOES IT WORK? There are three main components to a MIPS-equipped helmet: the foam liner, the low-friction liner and an elastomeric attachment system between them. In an impact, the foam liner dissipates force. Additionally, the elastomeric attachment system stretches to allow the foam liner to rotate independently around the low-friction liner and your head. Although the MIPS system only rotates a few millimeters, that movement may reduce the amount of rotational force that could be transferred to your brain.

COMPREHENSIVE PROTECTION

Bell strives to go above and beyond to protect during, and now after, an impact. For 2016, we have extended the selection of helmets that come with an ICEdot sticker. ICEdot is an emergency notification service that syncs a secure online profile with a helmet sticker that containers a unique code. ICEdot has the ability to share pre-designated health information over sms/text. ICEdot ID products allow first responders to retrieve emergency information stored in an ICEdot profile. First responders send an SMS text message containing the PIN found on the ID product to the number specified and an immediate response message is returned containing information on the individual.

The skate-style look never gets old. But that rigid bowl-style shell feel can be a drag. That’s where Segment shines. It has the classic shape of an old-school skate helmet, but its ingenious design gives it head-hugging flexibility. So it’s way more comfortable. How did we do it? A series of interior EPS foam segments are connected by a reinforcing skeleton—so it fits more like a comfortable cap than a helmet and still meets bike and skate safety standards. Pretty amazing, right?
