coming to the Center‚ to connect with friends, create lasting memories, and enjoy a wide variety of daytime and evening activities.

Each day, there is something for everyone at the Center. Children aged 4 and 5 can attend the Playschool every weekday morning. There is also a daily program for older children, ages 6 to 14, which gets kids outside, engages them in games, basketball, tennis, art, and more, and provides them with opportunities to socialize. Adults come to the Center during the day for a host of activities: to play tennis with friends, take a tennis lesson with one of our pros, take an exercise class and learn about a wide variety of topics in programs led by local experts.

There are evening activities at the Center for the whole family. Each week, the Center hosts a wide variety of events through the Martha’s Vineyard Book Festival, performances by The Chamber Music Society (MVCMS), and films brought to us by the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival (MVFF). The Chilmark Community Center also holds a number of special events each year including annual barbecues, and the ever-popular Chilmark Road Race.

Join the Chilmark Community Center, and enjoy all that our lovely Island town has to offer. The Center offers a variety of membership types to allow members to choose the level of participation that best suits their needs. Our membership structure is designed to be inclusive of all types of families, and also to cover multiple generations. Friends and non-immediate relatives are welcome to attend the Center as guests of the member; guests must register at the Center office and a guest fee will apply.

Morning Program Activities

Art At the Art Shack

Kids will learn to work with a wide variety of materials on a broad range of projects, including tie-dye, paper mâché, plaster masks, origami, jewelry making, ceramics and stenciling. There will be daily activities for each age group. We are also excited to have a new Art Director this season, Mariah MacGregor.

Kayak & Paddleboarding

Kids enrolled in the 6-14 morning program are invited to paddleboard and kayak with Chick Stapleton of Island Spirit Kayak! Each session will start with a brief instruction on safety and kayak and paddleboarding techniques. The group will then venture out into Menemsha Pond where kids will have the opportunity to play games and practice their new skills in a protected environment. Participants will learn team building skills, water safety and wildlife identification. Sessions will be held once a week on Wednesdays. Children must be registered by noon (the day before the session) to participate. Paddleboard is available to children 10 and over only.

There will be no refunds for Kayak/Paddleboard reservations not cancelled at least 24 hours in advance, except due to adverse weather conditions. Single session $45; 4-pack $160; 6-pack $210; 10-pack $300.

14 Morning Program Activities

Sports and All Center Activities

The Center offers a wide variety of traditional sports and games; everything from soccer to handball to “Racket Smacket” to capture the flag. Due to popular demand, there will be additional All-Center activities featured this summer, such as the balloon game, Olympics, Goolympics, and more!

Tennis

All children registered at the Center for the morning program may participate in morning junior clinics. Please refer to the Junior Tennis section in this booklet, page 23, or visit www.chilmarkcommunitycenter.org for the most up to date information about the program.

Eddie Stahl, Director of Tennis Program

Eddie is an important part of both the adult and kid’s tennis programs. His influence with CCC kids has been particularly special— inspiring them not only to play tennis, but to swim in island waters, paddle board, eat healthfully and do yoga. He is the pied piper to our younger players and an excellent teacher to all.

Justin Grossman, Tennis Program Manager

A community center lifer, 2-time Chilmark Tennis Sportsmanship award winner, former Old School King, and Carny Hall of Fame inductee, Justin has spent the last 15 years as a camper, volunteer, and staff member drawn in to the fun and friendships of the CCC. Playschool

July 5 through August 19

For our youngest children (ages 4 and 5), the Center offers a 9:00am – 12:00pm program at the Chilmark School, directly adjacent to the grounds of the Community Center. There, away from the older kids, the children can run and play in a safe, supervised environment. From finger-painting to sing-alongs, playground equipment and water-fun – our Playschool Program offers three hours of activities to get your child’s summer day started right. Children are asked to bring a healthy snack with them each day (no peanuts or products containing nuts, please). Children must have completed potty training to attend the Playschool. Must be 4 years old on first day of enrollment.

Playschool Registration

Playschool registration begins July 4th. Each child must be registered for Playschool prior to attending. Due to staffing and capacity issues, Playschool registration is available in weekly blocks only; there are no refunds or discounts for partial weeks.

The Center has a junior tennis team that travels across the island to play other tennis teams on Wednesday afternoons. The Center provides transportation by professional taxi for the players for a fee to be split by the participants. Parents are invited to attend these matches and are asked to provide their own transportation. On those Wednesdays when no competitive match is scheduled, there will be team practice at the Center. Some Fridays, starting at 1:00pm, the Center runs a junior round robin/team play program for all junior Center tennis players interested in working on their competitive play skills in a fun setting. This is free of charge to Center Members who are registered for the 6-14 Program or who are Tennis Members. Call the tennis shack for details.
