ANNUALREPORT
2016
“To bring together and engage the community to rejuvenate Vancouver’s
natural spaces and urban places.”
2016 was another successful year for Vancouver Watersheds Alliance. Our programs continue to grow as we educate and engage the community. We sought to expand our outreach base, and welcomed many new participants this year.
2016 welcomed a new and exciting project—storm drain murals! Our micro-grant program helped fund 36 storm drain murals on Main St. in downtown Vancouver. We worked in partnership with 3 neighborhood associations (Esther Short, Hough and Arnada), Uptown Village Association, Vancouver Downtown Association, Clark County Mural Society, IQ Credit
Union and City of Vancouver Public Works. Due to the rain 18 were installed with the remaining being installed in 2017. Our community was very fortunate to have volunteer artists paint all the murals. The entire project was inspiring for all participants and the community. People were walking around looking for the murals and posting them on social media. I heard from many children who were excited to see what ones they could find and wanted to tell me all about them. One of the primary goals of the project was to educate the public about the importance of knowing what goes down the storm drains flows directly into the Columbia River. To help with this end goal, all murals had #drains to river and we distributed postcards to all the businesses near the murals with information about the project and storm drains.
We increased our numbers of volunteer invasive pulls in the parks, to help remove ivy, blackberries and other invasive species and the number of corporate and community groups participating in our above stewardship events. We continued our thriving annual tree planting program which helps restore the native growth in our riparian areas.
I am inspired by all our volunteers working to improve our local watershed—through planting trees, removing invasive plants, applying for grants, attending our educational film series and painting murals on our storm drains to educate the public about storm water health.

VISION STATEMENT: “Rejuvenating Vancouver’s natural spaces and urban places.”
MISSION STATEMENT: “To bring together and engage the community to protect and
enhance the natural environment of Vancouver’s Watersheds”
As a 501(c)(3), we provide environmental restoration, community outreach, promote
volunteerism, and care for our water resources. Vancouver Watersheds Alliance
works independently with other community and governmental organizations as well as
volunteers to accomplish our mission.
Dog waste station and litter sign
We engaged nearly 30,000 community members and children at educational fairs, festivals and film nights this year. Our film series continued at the Vancouver Public Library hosting an average of 100 people per showing. We continue to grow our volunteer and member base.
Restoration and clean-up are vital parts of our mission. This includes maintaining the beauty of our public spaces by removal of invasive plants, particularly ivy. This year’s planting projects restored creek-side habitat and improved the overall health of the ecosystem. Our Project Restore program targets private property owners to restore environmentally sensitive creekside areas.

Stewardship:
Martin Luther King Day (MLK) was held January 18, 2016. This was the first year we hosted an ivy pull at Blandford Canyon. The event brought out over 240 volunteers and 80 yards of invasive English ivy was pulled.
This annual event is one of our main avenues to reach the public in a large scale call-to-action. The ivy pulling in this natural area makes a big impact on the native trees and water quality. We use this opportunity to further educate the public about environmental issues and promote our
grant program.
