Questions to ask the financial aid officeBe prepared when you meet with finan-

cial aid officers at the schools you are in-terested in. Below is a list of questions that may help guide your conversation.

• What is the total cost of tuition and fees, room and board at your college?• How much has that figure increased annually over the last three years? • What scholarships are available and how do I apply for them?• Are additional scholarships available to upper-class students continuing into their sophomore, junior and senior years?• What types of financial aid are available?• What financial aid applications do I need to complete and when are they due?• What determines whether or not I will receive financial aid?• Do you meet the full need of every admitted student?• Do I have to apply for financial aid every year?• How and when will funds be disbursed to me?• What is the refund policy for students who withdraw?

Learn the languageBefore you begin your search for finan-

cial aid, it is helpful to understand a few key terms:

Financial aid often refers to the broad-er packaging of scholarships, grants, loans, etc. that helps offset the cost of col-lege. In some situations, however, finan-cial aid specifically refers to need-based aid.

Grants are awarded at the federal, state and institutional level and do not need to be repaid. They may be based on need, at the federal and state level in particular, or based on merit.

Loans are sometimes used to make up the difference when there is unmet finan-cial need. Many student loans are federal-ly guaranteed and dispersed through the Department of Education. Some bank-ing institutions offer student loans, and many private loans require that students have a co-signer.

Need-based aid is money awarded or loaned based on the student’s (and often-times the family’s) financial situation. De-pending on the type of financial aid, the money may or may not need to be repaid. One of two forms — the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or the College Scholarship Service Profile — is often used to determine a student’s financial need.

Payment plans are offered by many colleges and universities to distribute the full cost of the year’s tuition, fees, room and board over many months. Check with the school’s bursar’s (or business) office for details.

Scholarships are awarded for academ-ic, athletic or artistic talent; sometimes they are awarded based on service and leadership. In general, scholarships do not need to be repaid.

Work-study programs are a form of federal aid. As with any other type of stu-dent employment, students earn a stipend for the hours worked. Although some schools may estimate an amount earned each semester as part of the financial aid package, the actual amount will vary based on the type of job and number of hours worked.

Carlow is a private, co-educational, Catholic university located in the heart of Pittsburgh’s “Tech, Ed, and Med” district. Founded by the Sisters of Mercy, Carlow’s graduates, curriculum, and partnerships reflect its strong commit-ment to social justice; ethical, forward-thinking and responsible leadership; and service to the community that has a meaningful impact. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in three major areas: Health and Wellness, Leadership and Social Change, and Learning and Innovation. Carlow gradu-ates are in demand for their professional expertise, in fields ranging from nursing, the sciences, and perfusion technology to counseling, education, and forensic accounting; their entrepreneurial spirit and creative mindset; and their ability to manage change. Our student-athletes compete on eleven different teams, including men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf—and our mascot is Shammy, the friendly green shamrock that is a reflection of the university’s Irish heritage and roots.

Alma mater of environmental pioneer Rachel Carson ’29, Chatham University is home to nearly 2,200 undergraduate and graduate students. Founded in 1869, Chatham is comprised of two distinct campuses. The Shadyside Cam-pus is located on Woodland Road—a leafy sanctuary minutes from downtown Pittsburgh—and also includes Chatham Eastside, home to our health scienc-es and interior architecture programs, located in Pittsburgh’s vibrant Bakery Square. Located just north of Pittsburgh in Richland, PA, our 388-acre Eden Hall Campus is world’s first academic community built from the ground up for the study and practice of sustainability. Eden Hall has net zero energy; zero carbon emissions; onsite management of all storm and waste water, and offers a multitude of cultural and educational programs for visitors of all ages. Chatham’s academic excellence is centered within three schools: the Falk School of Sustainability, the School of Health Sciences, and the School of Arts, Science, and Business. Supported by Chatham’s signature Chatham Plan for undergraduate success, students can choose from over 40 majors, and through the Integrated Degree Program, qualified students are able to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in as few as five years.

Many students find that after scholarships and grants, a world-class Chatham University education can be had for about half of the sticker price. And our post-graduation employment rates confirm that it’s a sound investment.

Franciscan University of Steubenville seeks to educate, evangelize, and send forth joyful disciples of Christ to be a transforming presence in the Church and the world. Located just 30 minutes west of the Pittsburgh International Airport, Franciscan Univer-sity offers more than 40 undergraduate and 8 graduate programs that prepare students for a wide range of careers and vocations.

A popular study-abroad program in Austria, mission trips across the U.S. and to five countries, more than 40 clubs, a Center for Leadership, and a Christ-centered, virtue-driven NCAA Division III athletic program are just some of the ways students can grow in body, mind, and spirit.

Faith households, central to the Franciscan experience, are separate groups of men and women whose members support each other in Christian friendship. Currently, nearly two thirds of on-campus students are members of 50 households, which many graduates call their defining “life-changing” college experience.

Confession, daily Mass, round-the-clock Eucharistic Adoration, pro-life outreaches, and Festivals of Praise are a few ways students seek ongoing personal conversion in the pow-er of the Holy Spirit.

Since 1998, Franciscan University has received a top-tier placement in U.S. News & World Report’s list of America’s Best Colleges. Franciscan is also featured in Kiplinger’s Person-al Finance Magazine’s top 100 “best values” in private higher education, and the FORBES list of America’s Top Colleges. Franciscan is one of only 20 schools listed in The Cardinal Newman Society’s Guide to Choosing a Catholic College.

Founded in 1876, the college is committed to the principles of faith and freedom, a pio-neer in independent private education and accepts no federal funds. It offers its 2,500 students degrees in 50 majors in the liberal arts, sciences, engineering and music, as well as access to renowned faculty and state-of-the-art facilities on a picturesque 188-acre campus north of Pittsburgh.

Grove City College provides students with the resources and opportunities they need to succeed on campus and in life. From the tablet PC each student receives as a fresh-man to the ongoing career development assistance that pays off for graduates, the distinctive approach moves students from the classroom to the working world, from imagining to doing. Within six months of graduation, 95 percent of alumni are working or in graduate school.

And Grove City College is an amazing value, with the cost of tuition, room and board, books and expenses coming in at about half that of competitive private schools. For more information: www.gcc.edu

Giving Nursing Students Hands-On Experience Using Cutting Edge Technology!

Imagine yourself as a nursing student, walking into a room to check your patient’s vitals. You pull out your stethoscope and check their heart rate, which is holding steady at 75. You check their IV to make sure the proper dosage is being administered. Then, confi-dent in a job well done, you turn to your professor to make sure your patient is in fact doing well. She gives you thumbs up…..and then reset SimMan® 3G, a patient simulator who delivers an incredibly realistic learning experience.

“This type of simulation allows students to apply their knowledge in a manner that is safe and non-threatening. It’s really quite amazing to watch them bloom as they make decisions that create positive outcomes for their ‘patients’,” said Deborah Grippaldi, BSN, RN, an in-structor at the Ohio Valley Hospital School of Nursing (OVHSON).

At OVHSON, their state-of-the-art Nursing Simulation Lab gives students the hands on training necessary to be successful as a future RN. With SimMan® 3G, students can per-form CPR, administer IV medications, intubate (place tubing in a patient’s trachea), and listen to realistic heart, lung, and bowel sounds. The lab also contains an integrated audio-visual system with two cameras, a microphone, and an interactive projector. With this system, scenarios can be recorded and played back to the students so they can see how they did and where they can improve if necessary.

“…students are able to review and critique their own choices in a non-judgmental environ-ment. The simulation experiences we offer help foster confidence in our students throughout the program,” added Grippaldi.

With the type of hands-on experience offered in this unique environment, it’s no wonder modern-day nursing students are able to use the classroom in ways never thought of be-fore; to the benefit of their future careers in nursing, and their future patients.

Seton Hill’s New Arts and Health Sciences Centers “Fit Students for the World”

Seton Hill University, a Catholic liberal arts university welcoming students of all faiths, recently welcomed two big additions to its Greensburg, Pa. campus: an ultramodern Arts Center and a leading-edge Health Sciences Center.

The industrial-chic Arts Center is located one block down from Seton Hill’s world-class Performing Arts Center in Greensburg’s arts corridor. The Center features sculpture, graphic design, metalsmithing, clay, photography, printmaking, dance, drawing and painting studios; dance performances space; welding facilities and a foundry; art therapy and education studios. The Arts Center is also home to Harlan Gallery, a professional venue that houses exhibitions of regional and national artists in addition to student and faculty work.

The Boyle Health Sciences Center adds new classrooms, labs and exam rooms to the University’s programs in biology, biochemistry, physician assistant, osteopathic med-icine, pharmacy, dental medicine and health science. The Center, on the University’s main hilltop campus, also provides gathering and study spaces – with a great view of campus – for students of all majors.

Seton Hill’s new centers are part of an ambitious campus expansion project that cel-ebrates the history of the university – programs in the arts and sciences date back to the school’s founding in 1885 – as it grows toward the future. In addition, these new facilities provide faculty with dedicated resources as they prepare students, in the words of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton, to be “fit for the world in which they will live.”

Begin preparing for college as early as your freshman year of high school when you meet with your guidance counselor to determine your high school course schedule. Remember these tips as you conduct your college search process.

• Meet with your guidance counselor regularly throughout all four years of high school, beginning your freshman year, to ensure you take the right combination of courses for the types of schools in which you are interested. Consider early on if Advanced Placement (AP) or other advanced high school courses are important for admission to these schools.

• Participate in extracurricular activities through your high school or in your community. Take time to commit to and meaningfully engage in a few key activities that speak to your interests and goals.

• Prepare for the College Board Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) and/or the American College Test (ACT), as well as the preliminary tests for both, the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) and the PLAN (formerly P-ACT+), as early as your sophomore year. Plan to take these tests during your second semester junior year, at the

latest. Consider retaking these tests early in your senior year to achieve higher scores, which could directly impact admission and scholarship opportunities.

• Begin researching schools in your sophomore year so that you have a list of schools to visit in your junior year. Visit college websites, utilize the college counseling office at your high school, attend college fairs and meet with admission representatives when they visit your high school. Search for a Catholic college or university on the National CCAA website at http://www.catholiccollegesonline.org/search.html.

• Know the application deadlines and other important deadlines for scholarships and financial aid for the schools in which you are interested. Many admission applications should be submitted early in your senior year.

• Take the time to understand the scholarship and financial aid process. Get a summer job and begin saving for tuition, fees, and other essentials, like books and travel. Learn about financial aid and scholarships at http://www.catholiccollegesonline.org/students-parents/financial-aid/index.html.
