Questions to ask the financial aid officeBe prepared when you meet with finan-

Learn the languageBefore you begin your search for finan-

cial aid, it is helpful to understand a few key terms:

Financial aid often refers to the broad-er packaging of scholarships, grants, loans, etc. that helps offset the cost of col-lege. In some situations, however, finan-cial aid specifically refers to need-based aid.

Grants are awarded at the federal, state and institutional level and do not need to be repaid. They may be based on need, at the federal and state level in particular, or based on merit.

Loans are sometimes used to make up the difference when there is unmet finan-cial need. Many student loans are federal-ly guaranteed and dispersed through the Department of Education. Some bank-ing institutions offer student loans, and many private loans require that students have a co-signer.

Need-based aid is money awarded or loaned based on the student’s (and often-times the family’s) financial situation. De-pending on the type of financial aid, the money may or may not need to be repaid. One of two forms — the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or the College Scholarship Service Profile — is often used to determine a student’s financial need.

Payment plans are offered by many colleges and universities to distribute the full cost of the year’s tuition, fees, room and board over many months. Check with the school’s bursar’s (or business) office for details.

Scholarships are awarded for academ-ic, athletic or artistic talent; sometimes they are awarded based on service and leadership. In general, scholarships do not need to be repaid.

Work-study programs are a form of federal aid. As with any other type of stu-dent employment, students earn a stipend for the hours worked. Although some schools may estimate an amount earned each semester as part of the financial aid package, the actual amount will vary based on the type of job and number of hours worked.

“This type of simulation allows students to apply their knowledge in a manner that is safe and non-threatening. It’s really quite amazing to watch them bloom as they make decisions that create positive outcomes for their ‘patients’,” said Deborah Grippaldi, BSN, RN, an in-structor at the Ohio Valley Hospital School of Nursing (OVHSON).

At OVHSON, their state-of-the-art Nursing Simulation Lab gives students the hands on training necessary to be successful as a future RN. With SimMan® 3G, students can per-form CPR, administer IV medications, intubate (place tubing in a patient’s trachea), and listen to realistic heart, lung, and bowel sounds. The lab also contains an integrated audio-visual system with two cameras, a microphone, and an interactive projector. With this system, scenarios can be recorded and played back to the students so they can see how they did and where they can improve if necessary.

“…students are able to review and critique their own choices in a non-judgmental environ-ment. The simulation experiences we offer help foster confidence in our students throughout the program,” added Grippaldi.

All Saint Vincent College students enjoy the state-of-the-art classrooms and labo-ratories in the new $39 million Sis and Herman Dupré Science Pavilion at Saint Vincent College, which houses the Herbert W. Boyer School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Computing.

The pavilion provides a space where Saint Vincent students and faculty can do science together — to facilitate significant interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary programming and promotes informal interactions between and among the faculty and students. Construction will soon be under way on the $4.5 million James F. Will Engineering and Biomedical Sciences Hall that will feature a human anatomy laboratory, two research laboratories, an interdisciplinary classroom and an engineering laboratory. The human anatomy laboratory will provide cutting-edge, high-tech facilities for anatomical re-search. The facility will feature advanced audio and video capabilities, including a teach-ing station equipped with cameras and monitors to enhance instruction.

Seton Hill’s New Arts and Health Sciences Centers “Fit Students for the World”

Seton Hill University, a Catholic liberal arts university welcoming students of all faiths, recently welcomed two big additions to its Greensburg, Pa. campus: an ultramodern Arts Center and a leading-edge Health Sciences Center.

Wheeling Jesuit University’s philosophy is rooted in the Jesuit tradition that spans more than 450 years. Academic excellence, a commitment to serve others and the desire to educate the whole person are what make a Jesuit education unique and what stu-dents attending WJU can expect. Wheeling Jesuit offers more than 40 undergraduate programs, five master’s programs and a doctorate of physical therapy degree. WJU has more than 1,600 students enrolled.

Professors encourage conversation and critical thinking in the classroom and the 13-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio ensures that the university’s classrooms will never be mistaken for amphitheaters. Research is a key part of the undergraduate experience at WJU. Each year, more than 40 percent of the undergraduates participate in research projects, com-pared to 19 percent nationally.

National publications annually recognize WJU for its academic standards. In 2013-14, The Washington Monthly College Guide ranked WJU as the fourth best university among baccalaureate colleges, and a best “bang for your buck” institution. For the 18th consecutive year, WJU is the highest rated institution in West Virginia by U.S. News & World Report.

Another integral part of Jesuit education is service. Students from the university give more than 25,000 hours of service on the local, regional and national level each year.

Begin preparing for college as early as your freshman year of high school when you meet with your guidance counselor to determine your high school course schedule. Remember these tips as you conduct your college search process.

• Meet with your guidance counselor regularly throughout all four years of high school, beginning your freshman year, to ensure you take the right combination of courses for the types of schools in which you are interested. Consider early on if Advanced Placement (AP) or other advanced high school courses are important for admission to these schools.

• Participate in extracurricular activities through your high school or in your community. Take time to commit to and meaningfully engage in a few key activities that speak to your interests and goals.

• Prepare for the College Board Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT I) and/or the American College Test (ACT), as well as the preliminary tests for both, the PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) and the PLAN (formerly P-ACT+), as early as your sophomore year. Plan to take these tests during your second semester junior year, at the

latest. Consider retaking these tests early in your senior year to achieve higher scores, which could directly impact admission and scholarship opportunities.

• Begin researching schools in your sophomore year so that you have a list of schools to visit in your junior year. Visit college websites, utilize the college counseling office at your high school, attend college fairs and meet with admission representatives when they visit your high school. Search for a Catholic college or university on the National CCAA website at http://www.catholiccollegesonline.org/search.html.

• Know the application deadlines and other important deadlines for scholarships and financial aid for the schools in which you are interested. Many admission applications should be submitted early in your senior year.
