Washington County residents will have access to new online and mobile tools for keeping track of garbage and recycling pick-up schedules. Starting in early 2016, you will be able to:

• Look up your garbage and recycling schedule.

• Print your customized calendar.

• Sign up reminders by phone, email or text.

• Get notified about winter weather and holiday schedule changes.

• Find nearby drop-off recycling centers for items that aren’t recyclable in your curbside cart.

Household hazardous waste, medical syringes, lancets and needles can be disposed of at a Metro drop-off hazardous waste facility or a free neighborhood collection event. Look for products labeled danger, warning or caution. Visit www.OregonMetro.gov/HHW or call 503-234-3000 for more information.

Recycling and garbage collection guide

Paper and cardboard

• Boxes, magazines, newspaper, junk mail and rinsed cartons

• Shredded and scrap paper in a paper bag

Metal

• Rinsed metal cans — lids and smaller scrap metal contained in crimped cans

• Empty aerosol cans — nozzles still on can

• Metal paint cans — less than 1 inch of dry paint

• Scrap metal — under 30 pounds and pieces smaller than 30 inches long

• No household appliances

Plastic bottles, buckets and tubs

• Rinsed containers

• Clean, plastic paint containers

• Sizes between 6 ounces and 5 gallons

Set out roll carts and bins:

• At the curb by 6 a.m.

• At least 3 feet from cars, trees and each other

• Without blocking sidewalks, bike paths or driveways

Recycle and dispose of other items

You can recycle many items that don’t go into your recycling container by taking them to a drop-off recycling center. To find a drop-off recycling center near you, visit www.OregonMetro.gov/FindARecycler or call Metro at 503-234-3000. Before you go, call the drop-off recycling center to confirm accepted items and hours.

Items recycled at some drop-off recycling centers:

Glass bottles and jars

• Separated in the red glass recycling bin

• Placed next to roll carts

• Rinsed containers with no caps, lids or corks

• Grass clippings

• Leaves

• Plants

• Pruned branches — less than 4 inches in diameter and less than 36 inches long

• Weeds

• Bowls, plates and drinking glasses

• Clear deli containers*

• Food scraps

• Frozen food boxes

• Lids and straws

• Paper or plastic plates and cups

• Pet waste

• Plastic bags and thin film*

• Pizza boxes, napkins and other food soiled paper

• Soiled diapers

• Styrofoam*

• Window glass, vases and mirrors

• All other garbage

*Look for drop-off recycling options.

• Contained in a 1-gallon see-through plastic container with a screw-top lid

• Placed next to roll carts

• Only motor oil — no other liquids accepted
