General InformationFall 2016 Semester CalendarPlease pay special attention to the dates that classes begin and end. Note that leaving early or returning late may impact your grades.

Credit HoursTo be considered a full-time student at Trinidad State Junior College, you must be enrolled in at least 15 credit hours. Federal Financial Aid recognizes a student carrying 12 credit hours to be full time. If you are enrolled in a career or technical educational program, you may not take more than 26 credit hours without the approval of the Dean of Instruction.

Arranged CoursesThe abbreviation “TBA” means that the time, days, or locations are scheduled on an individual basis between student and instructor. Students are responsible for seeing the instructor to arrange their schedules.

Course Cancellations The College reserves the right to cancel programs or courses, to change instructors, and to change times or locations of classes. The Vice President of Academic Affairs will have current, up-to-date information on scheduled classes.

Drops, Withdrawals and Repeating a Course It’s important to know the drop and withdrawal dates for all your classes. The dates are listed on the academic calendar or your individual course syllabus. What’s the difference between “drop” and “withdraw”? If you drop a class before the census date, you will receive a tuition refund, and you will not lose College Opportunity Fund (COF) credits. You can withdraw between the census and withdrawal dates. It won’t affect your grade point average, however, you will not get a refund, and you will lose COF credits.

A student who earns a grade of D, F, or U may repeat the course once for the purpose of improving the grade point average (GPA). Both grades earned will be entered on the transcript; however, only the highest grade will be counted in calculating the cumulative grade point average. Duplicate credit is not granted for repeating a course. It is the student’s responsibility to drop or withdraw from classes if they stop attending. Students can go to the Student Services Office on either campus to drop or withdraw from a class. If a student decides to withdraw from a class after the census, but before the last 20% of the class, and has a passing grade, the grade will be recorded as “W.” A “W” is not counted in computing grade point averages. If a student withdraws during the last 20% of the class, a regular grade will be assigned that does count in computing grade point averages. Requests for exception to this procedure may be made to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Tuition Refunds If a student officially drops from classes prior to the class census date, a 100% refund of tuition will be made. There will be no refund if the student withdraws after the class census date. The College reserves the right to cancel course offerings where enrollment is too low to make a course educationally sound and/or economically feasible. Course cancellations will result in refund of tuition.

Registration DeadlineThe deadline for registering for classes is the first Friday of class or as designated in the TSJC schedule. Students requesting to register after the deadline date must obtain approval from the departmental Dean for late authorization and registration into a class after the deadline date.

Tuition ClassificationColorado law requires that students be classified as in-state or out-of-state for tuition purposes. Tuition classification is based upon information supplied on the application for admission. Students previously classified as out-of-state may have their classification changed through a Tuition Classification Petition process. Petitions and information concerning documentation may be obtained in the Registrar’s Office or the Student Services Office on either campus. Petition applications must be received by either the Registrar’s Office or Student Affairs Office by the first Friday of class each semester. The tuition classification officer must request and maintain adequate documentation to support any applicant’s claim for change in status. The policy for tuition classification is outlined in the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) System President’s Procedure 4-40. For more information, go to https://www.cccs.edu/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/SP4-40.pdfAppeal Procedures: When a decision is rendered and the student is not in agreement with the decision, the student may appeal the decision to the “Student Affairs Committee” by contacting the Vice President of Student Services. The student will be required to present supporting documentation to a panel of institutional representatives for review and resolution. The student will be notified of the decision made by the appeals panel and the reasons behind the decision. The decision of the appeals committee is final.Deadlines: Students have until the first Friday of each semester to submit a petition for change in Tuition Classification. Once the petition is submitted, the College will make a determination by census date.

Check RequirementsTo earn a degree, students must satisfy all course and curriculum requirements for the program under which they are registered and attain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher. Basic skills courses do not count toward a degree. Use the TSJC Portal to access Degree Works. Degree Works is a tool available to all students. It provides information on degree Progress, required courses and time to completion. Familiarize yourself with the provisions and regulations pertaining to your program. See an Advisor when in doubt. TSJC will make every effort to assist you in meeting requirements for graduation. Final responsibility, however, rests with you.

TransferTrinidad State Junior College has transfer agreements with Colorado’s four-year colleges and universities. These agreements ensure that if you successfully complete requirements for graduation with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science Degree, you have fulfilled general education requirements and you will be granted upper division status at the receiving institution. Each applicant for admission who has attended another institution or college may not disregard a previous collegiate record. Transfer students will be applying for admissions as a first-time freshman. A student who wishes to transfer to Trinidad State Junior College may do so provided that the student is in good standing at the college from which he/she wishes to transfer. An official transcript must be sent directly to the college from the institution where the credits were earned. College transcripts will be evaluated prior to registration to ascertain acceptable credits that will apply to the student’s program of study. Courses for which the student has earned a grade of “D” or “F” will not be accepted for credit. Students with a GPA below 1.5 may be admitted on academic probation.

In determining academic standing while attending TSJC, the GPA of a transfer student is computed on the basis of credits attempted at Trinidad State Junior College only and will not include credits and grade points earned at other colleges.Up to 45 credits earned at regionally accredited colleges or universities or other approved educational institutions may be applied toward fulfilling TSJC program requirements. Please contact the Registrar at 719-846-5550 for more information about accepted transfer credits.

Prior Learning AssessmentThe Prior Learning Assessment program or PLA program allows students to earn credit for learning that occurs outside the sponsorship of accredited post-secondary education institutions. PLA is not awarded for experience but for college-level learning which entails knowledge, skills, and competencies that students have obtained as a result of their prior learning experiences. Contact the Registrar at 719-846-5550 for more information about how to be awarded prior learning credit.

Transfer of credit for vocational courses are determined by the Dean of Instruction. Contact the Dean at 719-846-5577 on the Trinidad Campus or 719-589-7064 on the Valley Campus for more information about how to receive vocational course credit.

Residence HallsThere are four residence halls on the Trinidad Campus to house students. The residence halls are staffed with housing employees and a support staff of residence life assistants. Students living in the residence halls are required to have a meal plan through the dining hall. The food service company, Sodexo, strives to serve the students with a variety of menus, quality service, and unlimited seconds for most meals. For more information about housing

go to: http://www.trinidadstate.edu/students/housing.

Immunization RequirementsColorado Law requires that all full-time students born after January 1, 1957 show proof of immunization against measles, mumps, and rubella. Students residing in student housing are required to show proof of immunization against meningococcal disease. Proof of immunization is required at the time of registration. Certification and waiver forms are available at the Student Services Office.

Student Health InsuranceTSJC does not require health insurance for non-athlete students. However, all student athletes must show proof of a student health plan. Trinidad State encourages all students to carry health insurance. For information on student insurance, see the Student Services Office on your campus.

International Students are required to provide evidence of insurance in accordance with the International Student Application process

Military/Veterans and Their FamiliesTrinidad State Junior College takes pride in being able to meet the educational needs of military service members, their families and veterans. The college is approved by the Colorado State Approving Agency for Veterans Education. Military tuition assistance, veteran’s education benefits, and veteran’s vocational rehabilitation are administered by the Financial Aid Office on both campuses. Each semester, active duty military members and veterans using or wanting to use educational benefits must report to the Financial Aid Office after completing the enrollment process. To maintain educational benefits in good standing students must immediately inform the Financial Aid Office if you:• drop, add or audit classes;• stop attending classes;• have a class canceled, withdraw or are withdrawn from classes or the college;• are unable to attend classes; or• make any changes to your enrollment status.TSJC students using a military benefit must complete paperwork with the TSJC Financial Aid Office each semester. To make an appointment to review your benefits, verification, intent to register or related questions, contact Financial Aid at 719-846-5553. For more information, visit the TSJC web site for the VA Checklist, verification timeline schedule or stop by the Financial Aid Office on either campus.

Student Bill of RightsThe Colorado Student Bill of Rights focuses on various aspects

of student academic life including advising, transferability of credits, and degree completion.

One particular segment of the Student Bill of Rights notes that a student may formalize a plan to obtain a degree in four years. Trinidad State Junior College supports this timeline for graduation by publishing advising guidelines under which a student may expect to graduate or complete and provides degree checklists through the degree works tool on the student portal. Advising guidelines are available in the Student Success Center and Learning Center on campus and through degree check on the TSJC portal.

There are some majors, which may require additional degree requirements as recognized by the Colorado Department of Higher Education. For more information, or to read the Colorado Student Bill of Rights, go to http://www.collegeincolorado.org/Academics/Transfers/Bills/hb1263.pdf, or see your Advisor in the Student Services Office on either campus.

Student Rights/FERPAThe Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 restricts the release of student information to the public without the consent of the student, except for directory information. Directory information includes name, Major field of study, enrollment status, dates of enrollment, degrees and honors earned, participation in officially recognized activities and sports. Additional items for college athletes are height, weight and high school attended. The Solomon Amendment requires institutions receiving federal funds to provide additional directory information that includes address and phone number of enrolled students to the US Military. Directory information is limited to the current academic year only. If a student does not wish TSJC to release the directory information, a written request must be submitted in the Student Services Office

before the end of the first week of classes. Your request will remain in effect until you formally cancel it. For more information, contact the Registrar directly at 719-846-5550 for special accommodations.

CCCOnline is not a college! We are part of the Colorado Community College System of 13 two-year colleges in the state - including Trinidad State Junior College. CCCOnline delivers online courses from those 13 colleges.

If you are already a student at TSJC, you can register for CCCOnline and your on-campus classes at the same time. CCCOnline classes have their own unique section number C11, C12, C21 or C22, so you can easily tell them apart from Trinidad State Junior College’s online courses or those you take on campus.

If you want to take online classes, are a new student and have not yet applied to one of the 13 Colorado community colleges, visit www.ccconline.org and explore the programs and courses we offer.

All students who take CCCOnline courses must select a home college that offers the degree or certificate they want to pursue. Your home college:

• Keeps your Records • Processes your college application • Provides transcripts • Provides career counseling • Helps you transfer your credits • Issues your degree or certificate • Takes your tuition payment • Contact: [email protected]
