James J. rejoined our program in December 2015. He

lives in Fremont and attended Irvington High School.

His favorite food is pizza and he likes to listen to

music and go bowling. He watches baseball, San

Francisco Giants, and football, San Francisco 49ers.

At school, he enjoys all of the classes but his favorite

classes are going bowling and to the movies. He is on

the yearbook committee and has helped with the

newsletter.

In Current Events, the students sit down and discuss the

news with each other. They talk about the weather,

sports, local news, and special events happening around

the world.

Vince, our resident gardener, has been recovering from

being sick over the past couple of months. The students

visit him weekly. On his birthday, the students brought

him a card and some chicken noodle soup. We miss him

and hope he gets well soon!

March was Bully Awareness Month at Noll Center. The students had many opportunities to discuss this topic in Reading, Safe Happy Place (SHP), Men’s and Women’s group, and Yearbook class. Activities included wrinkled hearts and toothpaste!

In February, students learned how to make heart-healthy choices when they go shopping, cook food, and go out for dinner. In addition, they learned how to read food labels and determine if what they are buying is a healthy choice. Other things discussed were the importance of exercise, sleep, drinking more water and learning.

Isn't it fun and interesting to learn about famous people and what happened in history? In January, students learned about many interesting people including Martin Luther King, Jr., Albert Einstein, the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart, and many more.

In addition, we discussed numerous historical and important events that helped shape America.

Students took a trip to Stiver’s Lagoon where they learned

about watersheds, wetlands, and the effects of litter and

pollution on wildlife and the environment, plant, and animal

life cycles from Rangers Laurie and Sandy. They did a creek

survey, observed aquatic insects and plants in the lab, took

a native garden tour and observed the lifecycle of a frog.

We have another trip planned for April 26, 2016.

Every Winter, Trout in the Classroom sponsors set up a cold-

water trout aquarium in our classroom, and deliver trout

eggs. Over the next couple of months, they come to our

class and teach the students how to care for the trout,

monitor the aquarium water quality, and learn a great deal

about streams. In the spring, the students release the baby

trout fingerlings into Quarry Lake in Fremont. This program

is sponsored by Department of Fish Wildlife.

The Men’s Group continues to meet weekly with

Walter and Eric to discuss various issues and learn

conflict resolution techniques. Some of the topics

covered recently include bullying, perseverance,

self-esteem, responsibility, job skills and being a

gentleman. Students get a chance to express

themselves in a safe environment and work together to

discover new ways of dealing with issues and solving

problems.

No women allowed!

The Women’s Group (Pals-GG) are continuing their

weekly discussions about a variety of topics including

how to build friendships, teamwork, communication,

and compromise, and bullying. In this class, the ladies

get to share ideas and get feedback from their teachers

and peers. They really enjoy role-playing!

If you did not know, lunch is prepared every day at school for

the students. They play a huge role in assisting the teacher in

preparing and plating the food, delivering the food, and

cleaning up. The students learn many skills and take a lot of

pride in what they do. It’s definitely a group effort!

In December, the students made their annual visit to San Jose

for Christmas in the Park. They enjoyed walking around the

park and admiring all of the decorations.
