Together We Achieve More at the JAG SchoolsSchools are the cornerstone of a community, and

in this community, the James A. Garfi eld Schools have become the foundation and refl ection of community’s expectations. We only achieve great things because of the support of our community.

Our businesses are bombarded with requests to support fundraisers through donations and sponsorships, and they come through each and every time. Without the support of our community we would not be the district we have become. The support our businesses sets the stage for our achievements.

Parental involvement in a child’s education is one of the most statistically signifi cant factors in academic achievement. Our parents volunteer in classrooms, support our teachers, and most importantly, are there for their children. The support our parents give our students and our staff enable the skills and care necessary to achieve.

JAG staff is a family of professionals that are committed to one thing...the success of our

students. Our bus drivers, secretaries, clerks, cafeteria staff, custodians and maintenance staff work tirelessly to make every aspect of our schools excellent. Our teachers and administrators give it their all each day to make sure every student is motivated and succeeding to their fullest potential. It is this family atmosphere that is at the core of each of our achievements.

Students are why we work together. They are why we are here. Each decision we make is in the best interest of our students. In return, JAG students show the highest level of respect, sportsmanship and effort in all they do. The bottom line is that we have great kids. We are thankful to have the opportunity to serve these students.

Our businesses, parents, staff and students are what make this school and community such a special place. A great deal has already been done to make our community and our schools the very best place to live, work and learn. We look forward to working together to achieve even more!

Athletic facility fundraising is slow but steady. If you attended a football or soccer game this past fall you were witness to some of the upgrades that took place as a result of the completion of Phase 1 of the Athletic Facilities Plan. A total of $22,218.14 was raised through the “Challenge Raffl e” to complete all parts of Phase 1.

Phase 1: Player & Fan SafetyTotal Cost: $17,938.57 • Funds Raised: $22,218.14

With the completion of Phase 1, improvements were made to the stadium with a focus on player and fan safety. While we are very proud of the efforts, we also know it is only the start. This phase of the Stadium Improvement plan brought with it the following upgrades:• Replacement of wooden posts and ropes with

four foot vinyl-coated safety fencing• Installation of new goal posts• Stabilization of visitor bleachers

• Movement of fi eld away from home bleachers by 10 feet

It is now time to roll up our sleeves and shift our focus to Phase 2 of the project, which is the most aggressive phase of the project.

Phase 2: Facilities ImprovementsTotal Cost: $200,000 • Current Fund: $28,565.00

Phase 2 of the project will see the demolition of the current home bleachers and construction of new, ADA-compliant, aluminum bleachers, a new press box and an updated sound system. The fundraising goal for this phase is $200,000. Our current balance is $28,565.00. Below is a list of the fundraisers that have contributed to Phase 2 of the Athletic Facility upgrades:

• Harley Davidson Raffl e - $1,883.00• Night at the Races 2015 - $6,846.00• Charles Chevrolet Buick Test Drive 2015 -

$2,760.00• Clambake 2015 - $ 1,665.27 • Donations - $450.00

This is just the beginning of the work that needs to be done. Our athletic facilities are tired and need attention. It is inspiring to see so many individuals working toward the goal of improving them for future Garfi eld G-Men.

On March 22, 2014 the historic village of Garrettsville lost over 120 years of history and many businesses in one afternoon. Lots of theories, speculations and ideas exist about what should be done with the now-vacant property. Some expected new construction right away yet what many have failed to realize is that it will take millions of dollars to replace what was lost.

Two years later, Main Street may have a different look, but one needs to remember that Garrettsville is full of unique retail stores, great local restaurants, entertainment venues and hardworking industry. Many merchants have re-invented themselves and some new ones have arrived since 2014, offering year-round reasons for you to visit!

Spring and summer in Garrettsville are packed with great reasons to check out the village! Classic car cruises will take place monthly from May through September. Visitors can enjoy live music, hundreds of classic cars, and opportunity to visit the shops, restaurants and take a stroll across the boardwalk.

Garrettsville Summerfest (June 24-26) is one of Northeast Ohio’s largest summer celebrations and will be celebrating year number 12! In addition to rides, games, parades and contests, this three-day event is packed with more live entertainment and music than you will fi nd at most county fairs!!

Looking ahead, 2016 will see the return of the J.A. Garfi eld Historical Society Christmas Walk, which is slated for the fi rst two weekends in November. Be sure to watch for more details on this truly awe-inspiring event.

Garrettsville is Open For Business#GARRETTSVILLESTRONG

Coinciding with the Christmas Walk, the Garrettsville Area Chamber of Commerce will kick-off their annual Christmas on Main promotion which runs November 4th through December 11th.

These are just a few of the events happening in Garrettsville -- fundraising efforts through the Chamber of Commerce’s #GarrettsvilleStrong fund have continued and to date over $95,000 has been raised to help defray the expense of rebuilding. Remembering the National Bank of GarrettsvilleWhen President Abraham Lincoln and Congress

established the National Bank System in 1863 there were only 35 States, and a patchwork of privately owned banks throughout the country. Fearing competition, the hundreds of state and private banks initially disagreed with the idea of a national banking system; however, fi nancial pressures from the Civil War and a Federal desire to nationalize the banks fi nally won out.

In order for local banks to become chartered under the United States government they were required to meet two key requirements. Banks were required to possess a minimum of $50,000 in capital, and used that capital to purchase United States government bonds. For every $90 in of U.S. Bonds purchased by a bank, the government would issue $100 in National Bank notes printed with the town’s name, state and individual bank name. The actual printing of national bank notes was a task split between 3 different bank note companies in New York City. After the notes were printed, they

were shipped to the US Bureau of Printing for the treasury seal and treasury serial number and then on to the individual banks where they were signed by the Bank President, and Head Cashier.

During its lifetime, the First National Bank Of Garrettsville issued $1,298,380 dollars worth of national currency. The First National Bank Of Garrettsville was charted in 1872 and stopped printing money in 1935, which equals a 63 year printing period — a long operation period for a national bank. During its life, The First National Bank Of Garrettsville issued 21 different types and denominations of national currency — though no 50 or 100 dollar bills were ever authorized. Remember that in 1935, the peak of the depression, even $20 was a large amount of money.

During those 63 years there were 21 different types of denominations. There were 3 twenty year “charters” in a variety of denominations and each had a different design.

Among the most popular from the 1st charter was the Lazy 2. The $2 bill featured the number 2 sideways on the front of the note. The $20 bill depicted Pocahontas being baptized on the back. These large size notes measured 71/2” x 3”.

The 2nd charter had notes with the backside brown in color and the charter number in the center. There were also notes called “value bucks” in which the value was spelled out in capital letters. The 3rd charter had the $5 note with Lincoln Memorial pictured as the $5 bill has today.

Garrettsville National Bank merged with Kent National Bank in 1959 becoming Portage National Bank. A variety of mergers then transformed it again into Huntington Bank.

To learn more about the history of the Garrettsville area make a visit to the J. A. Garfi eld Historical Society located in Garrettsville’s historic Main Street business district. The museum houses countless antiques, artifacts, and photographs from around the area.

Explore, Hike, & Play in the Garrettsville AreaThe Garrettsville area offers residents and visitors

of all ages many opportunities for exploring the natural world via hiking trails, state & local parks, and picnic pavilions.

Garrettsville Village Park contains fi ve baseball/softball fi elds, a basketball court, a skateboard course and a playground. The park also contains outdoor pavillions available for weddings, reunions and parties. Two smaller parks located on Park Avenue and Brosius Road feature playground equipment, a tennis court & basketball court, and various sports fi elds.

Pixley Park located on SR 305 in Nelson Township features a baseball fi eld, and playground equipment perfect for younger children.

Portage County’s Headwaters Trail has a trailhead located at the rear of Garrettsville Village Park, and is great for hikers, bicyclists and horse riders.Headwaters Trail is an eight-mile limestone-paved trail built on the railbed of the former Cleveland-Mahoning Railroad line between Mantua and Garrettsville. The trail provides a safe and scenic route for hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders. Trailhead parking is available at Garrettsville Village Park, on SR 700 in Hiram, and in nearby Mantua Village Park.

Eagle Creek State Nature Preserve features a 6-mile trail system, including a boardwalk, wildlife observation tower, and small parking lot. Eagle Creek meanders through a wide fl oodplain dotted with beaver dams, marshlands, small bogs and button bush swamps, supporting a diversity of fl ora and fauna typical of northeastern Ohio.

Located on Wheeler Road, Hiram College’s James H. Barrow Field Station consists of a 360-acre parcel of land, with more than 200 acres of beech-maple forest, a cold-water stream, two ponds, old fi elds of varying ages, young forests, crop fi elds, a two-mile interpretive nature trail, a waterfowl observation building and meeting center, a lab building with student research areas and natural history displays, experimental agricultural fi elds and an aquatics building.

Although a small park, 167-acre Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park provides a thrilling experience to visitors, with its rugged cliffs and diverse plant life typical of a more northern climate. The spectacular rock formations at Nelson-Kennedy Ledges have become trademarks of the park. These rock formations are among the few outcrops in northern Ohio still exposed to view. Most of the outcrops elsewhere have been covered with soil and rock left by receding glaciers. Nelson-Kennedy Ledges is popular for picnicking and hiking.

The Village Piecemakers Quilt Club has been in existence for approximately 30 years, beginning in Mantua as The Buckeye Quilters. As more space was needed for the growing club, it moved to the Hiram Christian Church and then on to it’s current location at the Village Hall in Garrettsville.

The Village Piecemakers is a lively group of women

ranging from young to old, beginners to experts. The group’s purpose is to promote interest in the

art of quilting, to exchange ideas and to encourage growth in our members’ abilities and knowledge.

There are many activities that members can participate in each month such as fabric challenges, fabric exchanges, lottery blocks and charity quilts. However, our main project is to create a quilt every two years to be raffl ed during the Garrettsville Historical Society’s Christmas Walk.

Pictured is this year’s Raffl e Quilt; this queen-size quilt will be raffl ed off at the end of this year’s Christmas Walk in November. Tickets can be purchased at locations around Garrettsville. Tickets are priced at 6 Tickets for $5.

The Village Piecemakers meet every 3rd Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the Village Hall in Garrettsville. Anyone wishing more information can contact Barb Bejger at 330-527-2802 or Shelly Gordon at 716-485-1944.

The Silver Creek Garden Club has developed deep roots in the Garrettsville area during its more than 80 year history. As the Depression years were winding down, a group of men and women “interested in growing things” formed the club to share garden knowledge. Public service was important from the start. Each spring they planted petunias at the village railroad station and tended planters hanging from railings on the downtown bridge.

The emphasis on community service continues today, with members overseeing several dozen hanging baskets and planters downtown and caring for a large fl ower bed at the public library. Members gather monthly for presentations from garden experts or to tour gardens in the village.

With spring fi nally here, members are hard at work preparing another season of beautiful hang-ing baskets, planters and fl ower beds that enhance the Village from spring to autumn. Each year almost $3000, and a signifi cant number of volunteer hours are spent by the organization’s dedicated club members.

The Silver Creek Garden Club relies on donations from businesses, area residents, and the annual calendar fundraiser to raise the monies for their service project. The group also digs and sells pe-rennials and other plants from their gardens during the Chamber of Commerce annual community yard sale. Proceeds help pay for the fl owering baskets, planters and garden maintenance.

Hanging baskets are planned to appear along State Routes 88 & 82, and at $55 to $75 per basket, expenses can add up quickly. Anyone interested in contributing to the fl ower basket fund can make a tax deductible donation by sending their conti-bution to the Garrettsville Area Chamber of Com-merce (Post Offi ce Box 1, Garrettsville, OH 44231). Please be sure write “Flower Baskets” in the memo line of your check.

Meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of each month. Anyone interested in learning more should contact president Barb Bejger, 330-527-2802 or vice-president Marie Elium, 330-527-5136.

As a small community with a big commitment to business support, Garrettsville offers businesses of all sizes the best of both worlds. Every business is a big fi sh in our small (but very well-appointed) pond.

Retail and restaurant businesses have a variety of districts to choose from so you can place your business in the area that best matches the character of your store, be it charmingly quaint, no-nonsense specialty, or one-stop-shopping. The active Chamber of Commerce and Village event committees keep the Village hopping with festivals, car shows, socials, and expos, guaranteeing a steady stream of out-of-towners to supplement local customers.

Professionals will enjoy the comfortable offi ce spaces combined with easy access to the major courthouses and hospitals and plenty of opportunity to entertain clients without having to battle city traffi c to grab some lunch.

Industrial businesses have a place here as well. Garrettsville is an industrial nexus, located at the intersection of two state routes and convenient to the interstates and the Ohio Turnpike. The

Industrial District houses the various factories and industrial companies that Garrettsville is proud to host. With a signifi cant labor pool within walking distance, and plenty more just an easy commute away, Garrettsville is a great place for an industrial business to call home. While many plants and factories end up in a pretty unpleasant environment, you and your employees can step out the door of your establishment and enjoy a refreshing, productivity-enhancing lunchtime stroll on the Headwaters Trail or go the two blocks into town for a meal at one of the local restaurants, pizza places, or sandwich shops.

The area is central to pools of skilled and white-collar employees as well, including Maplewood Career Center, Kent State University Management School, and Hiram College.

Garrettsville’s solid Midwestern values make this a place where you don’t have to sacrifi ce quality of life to operate a quality business. Our business owners and employees are a part of our community and we’ll do our best to make you welcome.

Small Town America At Its Best!Garrettsville Summerfest

Garrettsville Summerfest is one of the largest summer celebrations in Northeastern Ohio. Drawing an estimated 25,000 attendees from around the state, this popular three day event is packed with tons of world-class live entertainment and music. Join us June 24th-26th as we celebrate 12 years of family fun in downtown Garrettsville.

Opening Ceremonies will begin at 6pm on June 24th. Come out and listen to a great variety of music, take a stroll down Main Street, ride a few rides and, of course, eat some great festival food.

Saturday morning, the fi ercest of the fi erce will battle Silver Creek in a Steeplechase Canoe Race. The grueling race will have folks mastering the elements of the creek, including beaver dams, downed trees and brush. This race is for the more seasoned canoeist. A $100 grand prize is up for grabs to the team who completes the race with the fastest time!

The kids will be demonstrating their football skills at the Lions’ Club Punt Pass and Kick Contest early Saturday morning. Don’t forget to get your pies ready; the pie baking contest judging starts at noon; all entries

need to be at Slim ‘n Jumbo’s by 11 am.Grab a snack or lunch from the many food vendors

and stake a claim at the annual Tractor Parade where over 200 tractors of all sizes and ages will be rumbling down State Route 88 at noon. After the parade, you may want to cool off with an ice cream cone at the Ice Cream Eating Contest sponsored by Dairy Queen.

For those that may want a sit-down meal, head over to St. Ambrose Church and enjoy a wonderful chicken dinner complete with homemade desserts. Try your hand at cornhole, as there will be both amateur and professional Cornhole Contests on Saturday. For those with a huge appetite, consider entering the Hamburger-Eating Contest and see if you can dethrone the current champ!

Late in the day, be sure to take a leisurely stroll down to Garfi eld Plaza and check out all the classic cars at the Chamber of Commerce’s Car Cruise. At 10 pm the area’s largest fi reworks display will begin; the fi reworks are viewed best by the Summerfest Main Stage or at the Sky Plaza parking lot.

Sunday morning the fun starts early, so grab some coffee, lace up your running shoes and help us kick cancer in the annual Summerfest 5K/1 mile run & fun walk. Afterwards you will want to grab a bite to eat, and fi nd a spot to watch the Grand Parade which steps off at noon.

As the festival begins to wind down for another year, be sure to bring your lawn chairs and stake a claim for Garrettsville Idol. The youth and teens divisions each compete for $500 and while the adults will compete for $1,000.

The festival comes to a close on Sunday with the winner of the Car or Cash Raffl e being drawn. This year, one lucky person may drive home in a 2016 Chevy Colorado or walk away with $20,000 cash!

Scientists link hearing loss to decreased cognition, depression and learning disorders, but CDC doesn’t give it attention it desrves.

The United States is approaching a tipping point in terms of hearing loss and how it is treated under current policy. In recent years, science has discovered an increasingly pronounced association between a decline in cognition and hearing loss, yet this is not regarded with the same urgency as many other conditions.

The results, published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society, show that self-reported hearing loss is “signifi cantly associated,” with cognitive decline over time compared with those who did not report hearing loss. Researchers also noticed that, “subjects with hearing loss using a hearing aid had no difference in cognitive decline.”

Hiram Farm is an agricultural setting that serves

developmentally disabled adults with an emphasis on

adults on the Autism Spectrum.

The Farm provides opportunities for these adults to grow, learn and work in a setting focused on respect and support

for individuals and the environment.

Each day our farmers work by taking care of our gar-den, therapeutic animals and raise market animals to supply our community with local, organic, pasture raised beef, pork, lamb, turkey chicken and brown eggs.

Stop by the big red barn for hydro-organic butter-head lettuce, and fresh brown eggs. Call the office to place your order for pasture raised beef, lamb and roasting chickens.

When the weather keeps us inside we spend our time making beautiful and unique gifts. Stop by our farmhouse to see our amazing craft and woodwork! All of the proceeds from our sales go directly to pay our

hardworking farmers.
