It was a year of t ransit ion for the men?s club competit ion with HBHA signalling that in 2017 entries from secondary schools teams will no longer be accepted.
Nine men from Hawke?s Bay played in the National Hockey League National League which won the bronze medal. Five men and one woman from Hawke?s Bay were selected in the Central Districts Under 21 teams which finished 5th and 4th respect ively.
The numbers of secondary school teams (53) were similar to previous years. The girls competit ions (27 teams) were strong and consistent across all grades. 2016 saw two girls teams from Hawke?s Bay schools (Iona and Napier Girls) and three boys teams (Napier Boys, Hast ings Boys and Lindisfarne) compete in the top secondary schools tournaments (Federat ion Cup/Marie Fry Trophy and Rankin Cup/India Shield). Woodford House gained promotion for 2017. Four boys and four girls from Hawke?s Bay played in the Central Districts Under 18 teams. The girls won the silver medal and the boys were 4th.
Hawke?s Bay girls representat ive teams had a stellar year. The Under 18 Premier team finished 3rd in Timaru and the Under 15 Premier team won the gold medal. A group of talented U15 players has kicked on from earlier success at Collier Trophy and were unbeaten on a pre-season tour of Australia.
CHAIRMAN'S REPORTHAWKE'S BAY HOCKEY | 6
The Board and hockey community can look back on 2016 with well-deserved feelings of sat isfact ion ? our club and school competit ions are strong, our player numbers are growing, our facilit ies are excellent and our financial posit ion is solid.
The number of club teams and players in 2016 were similar to previous years. A concerted effort has been made in recent years to improve women?s hockey and the consensus is that the 2016 women?s club competit ion was stronger than in recent years. It is clear that having so many secondary school girls playing in the club competit ion makes a significant contribut ion.

The Under 15 Boys Premier were a creditable 4th in Auckland. The numbers of intermediate school teams increased by 3 to 36. The Hatch Cup and Collier Trophy were both strong teams that finished in the top eight. The number of teams in the Primary Schools competit ions cont inues to increase with player numbers increasing to 930. On Saturday mornings the Hast ings and Napier turfs are fully occupied from 0830 unt il well after 1200.
HBHA coaches delivered the Small St icks programmes to 18 primary and intermediate schools which includes skills training for children and coaching for parents and teachers, while Stuart Ashby delivered umpiring modules. The Sports Skills in Schools and Small St icks programmes will deliver to 22 new schools in 2017 with ongoing delivery to 7 schools in the mult i-year programme funded through Sport Hawke's Bay and Hockey New Zealand. We ant icipate new teams joining our competit ions which will put pressure on available turf t ime ? a nice problem to have!
Hawke?s Bay Hockey Associat ion again hosted the Affiliates Tournament in Napier as part of the Fest ival of Hockey. Our teams had great success ? both men?s and women?s teams made their finals with the women convincingly beat ing Australian Country to win gold. This tournament is important in Hockey New Zealand?s programme and gives emerging Hawke?s Bay players, coaches, umpires and officials opportunit ies to extend themselves. The Queensland Challenge teams returned to Napier as part of their New Zealand tour competing over two days in the annual tournament against Hawke?s Bay sides. They said that the Hawke?s Bay visit cont inues to be the highlight of their annual trip and will be returning in 2017 for the 10th year.
It is with sadness that 2016 saw the passing of Ben Webb and Ange Findlay ? valued members of our hockey community.
On behalf of the hockey community, I would like to thank my fellow Board members who have worked on governance in a very professional manner and are always willing to help with administrat ion when called upon. Andrea Cullen, in her first year as Community Hockey Manager, has very quickly established herself as a talented and hard working person. 2016 has seen the cont inued improvement in HBHA?s finances following lean years: the Finance Committee has done an excellent job. I also thank Michelle Francis, Administrat ion Manager, for her hard work and administering of hockey in the region. Two major sponsors came on board in 2016 ? Big Save Furniture and Cape Physio ? who are gratefully acknowledged with naming rights on the two Napier turfs. Because of our solid financial posit ion, HBHA has no plans to increase fees in 2017 and is looking at projects including new scoreboards.
Hockey in the Hawke?s Bay has gone through a transit ion stage in recent years and is now in a strong and posit ive posit ion, with interest and part icipat ion numbers in the sport on the rise.
Hawke?s Bay Hockey celebrated many successes over 2016 with various representat ive select ions at regional and nat ional level, nat ional t it les, huge numbers in school delivery programmes and increased numbers in team registrat ions in both winter and summer competit ions. The Associat ion is grateful for the support of our two major sponsors who signed on as turf sponsors in 2016. We thank Cape Physio and Big Save for their support, and look forward to building these relat ionships. The Associat ion also thanks all its other sponsors and stakeholders who contribute to what make Hawke?s Bay Hockey great.
Over 2016, the Associat ion has had the opportunity to assess and review many areas of what makes hockey t ick in the Hawke's Bay and we were able to make improvements where possible and plan to future proof hockey in the region.
2017 is looking promising and excit ing for hockey in the region with further delivery of school programmes, further expected growth in part icipat ion numbers and opportunit ies for further development in other areas including coaching and umpiring.
I personally wish to thank the Hawke's Bay Hockey Board and Hawke's Bay Hockey staff for all the hard work and effort put into the year, the number of hours contributed and the absolute passion and drive for the sport that they all have. I would also like to acknowledge and thank all of the volunteers, helpers, coordinators, coaches, managers, camp mum and dads, tournament helpers, teachers in charge, sport coordinators, club committees, umpires, officials, parents and of course all the players for all that you do and contribute to the sport . Hawke?s Bay Hockey is a unique, innovat ive and vibrant community and I feel absolutely privileged to be a part of. I look forward to the year ahead.
