NOVEMBER
Dear Saint Mary's family,
Thank you so much for calling me to be the 20th Rector of
St. Mary's Episcopal Church. In this, my first contribution to
The Bells, I wanted to Let you all know how delighted
Sharon and I are to join you at Saint Mary’s, and to make
Daytona Beach our new home. We are excited about the
church and the community and we look forward to the
opportunity over the next few months to getting to know each
and every one of you personally. I would also like to use this
letter as an opportunity to let you all know how thankful I am
for the job that Father Bob has done in preparing Saint Mary’s to be able to issue
this call. His contribution to Saint Mary’s has been invaluable, and for that we all
owe him a debt of gratitude. His loving work during these past two years as Interim
Rector has laid the foundation for us to be able to begin this walk together.
In going through this process with the search committee and vestry, one of the
things that became immediately clear was the love that everyone involved has for
our beautiful and historic church. Saint Mary’s, as a congregation, has represented a
prominent and foundational role in bringing the love of Jesus Christ to the greater
Daytona area since as early as 1872. We are tasked with continuing that tradition by
spreading the gospel of Christ to the people here in our community. Being called to
lead you in our mission: “To Know Christ and to serve Him” is an honor that is both
humbling and exciting for me. As we walk forward together in our journey as Chris-
tians over the coming years, growing in our knowledge and love of our Lord and of
each other, I look forward to seeing what Jesus Christ can do through us. Of one
thing I am certain, through our prayer and faithfulness, Saint Mary’s will grow and
become an ever increasing beacon of Christ’s love in our area, a place where people
will be able to find and know God through traditional worship, biblical preaching,
and a focus on advancing His kingdom.
It is so appropriate that our new ministry together begins during the week of All
Saint’s Day. As we remember the saints and the souls of the faithfully departed that
have gone before us, let us remember that without them we would not be as pre-
pared for taking the gospel forward as we are, and without us, the next generations
will not be either. We have a role to play in God’s plan for the reconciliation of the
world, just as those before us did. There is work to do. My goals leading into Ad-
vent are to settle in to the church and our new home, to get to know all of you, and
to get comfortable with how the schedule at Saint Mary’s operates so that there will
be as little disruption as possible from the “normal” during this time of transition.
Please bear with me during these first few weeks as I seek to get acclimated, and
know that I am truly excited and honored by the role you have called me to.
In Christ’s love,
Fr. Jason
Dear St. Mary’s family,
Last month I referenced “there’s a new day dawning” in my Bells
article. My point of reference was from the Praise Hymn and the fact
that we sang is frequently at Cursillo #64 which I attended in 1990, I
think it was 1990. I would like to think more in depth about “a new day dawn-
ing” and what it means to us. Every new day is an extraordinary day, the pros-
pect of opportunity. It can be a day of transition, a day for progress, a day to
pursue God’s will, a day for a new vision, a day with a new challenge! Each
day is vital and important to our personal progress in pursuit of God’s will for
us.
We find ourselves at the break of dawn as we watch the sun rising over the
ocean. There is most certainly a new day dawning for St. Mary’s as we wel-
come our 20th rector, Fr. Jason and Sharon Murbarger. With this opportunity of
transition progress will present itself and we will embrace the opening of a new
window and all the possibilities it will bring.
Please come and welcome the Murbargers on Sunday, November 6th.
For the past several months we have talked about the power of prayer and all
the prayers that were offered for the search process. Those prayers and God’s
grace brought Fr. Jason to us so continue to pray for Fr. Jason and St. Mary’s
without ceasing. Pray that we will hear that still small voice and be ready to an-
swer with “Here am I, Lord.”
May God’s peace and grace be yours in abundance,
Fran
