Study education at a leading universityDeakin is ranked in the top three per cent of universities across all three of the major international university ranking systems – the Academic Ranking of World Universities, Times Higher Education World University Rankings and QS World University Rankings – assessed from 17 000 universities worldwide.

We are also ranked number one in Victoria, number six in Australia and number 45 in the world, in the world’s top 50 universities under 50 years of age – QS World University Rankings.

Become a teacherIf you want to become a leader in the classroom, improve your teaching, or simply take your career in education to the next level, Deakin offers a wide range of disciplines and areas in education, including a wide choice of science and arts subjects, as well as programs addressing specific education needs, including Koorie teacher education, designed to meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

Pathways to your future career as a teacherDid you know that teacher education also commences at postgraduate level? The Master of Applied Learning and Teaching and the Master of Teaching have been developed as alternative pathways into the teaching profession. They are innovative courses with the flexibility of allowing you to gain a teaching qualification in early childhood, primary or secondary teaching, after you have completed your initial degree, as well as the option of a combined qualification in early childhood and primary or primary and secondary.

WHYDEAKIN?

Experiential learningResearch has shown that teachers perform better in the workforce when they have had practical teaching experiences throughout their university course. At Deakin we ensure you have all the practical experience you need to hit the ground running.

Flexible learningDeakin offers flexible learning options. Many education courses at Deakin allow you to study part time or full time at all our campuses, as well as via cloud (online) learning, increasing flexibility and enabling you to fit your study in with other commitments. Deakin’s trimester system allows you to fast track your studies and complete your program within a shorter timeframe.

You’ll learn from experts Deakin education staff are active researchers in the field, working to improve the quality of learning for all learners. Learn alongside people who are committed to making a positive impact on education in Australia and around the world.

Deakin staff have developed strong partnerships with education communities, governments, systems and research institutions. One recent research project involved greening early childhood spaces. Deakin early childhood researchers joined with award-winning nurseryman Wes Fleming to transform kindergarten play areas from concrete jungles to stimulating green outdoor spaces. The results showed increased physical movement in children and a greater willingness to engage in challenging play.

Deakin offers specialised courses, not generic, meaning you graduate with an in-demand qualification in your chosen field.

WORK PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTSSchool experience placements in schools in the course of a university degree are ‘child-related work’. Under the Working with Children Act 2005 (Vic.), administered by the Department of Justice, a student teacher must obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) before commencing school experience placements in a school. The WWCC must remain current throughout the course. It is an offence under the Act to engage in school experience without holding a WWCC.

DEAKIN CRACKS WORLD’S TOP 50 YOUNG UNIVERSITIESDeakin has continued its climb up the Times Higher Education (THE) list of the world’s top 100 universities under 50 years old, cracking the top 50 for the first time.

Deakin has been ranked number one in Victoria, number six in Australia and number 45 in the world.

The news confirms Deakin’s rise in the ranks of the very best young universities worldwide, after prestigious international university rankings organisation Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) last year listed Deakin at number 50 on its Top 50 under 50.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Jane den Hollander says at only 40 years young, Deakin owes its continuing success to a strong vision for the future and its wonderful staff, researchers, students, communities and partners.

‘In the past two years, Deakin has leapt 21 places from 66 to 45 in the list of the top 100 universities under 50 years old,’ Professor den Hollander says.

‘Times Higher Education says younger universities are bullish and “they have no fear of the future or of older rivals” – and I couldn’t agree more. Deakin is ready to drive the innovation that will create the jobs of the future.’

The program is an applied course, grounded in the practices and current issues in education policy, practice and education work. It provides a comprehensive contemporary understanding and experience of the business components required of educational leaders and business managers. Graduate Certificate of Educational Business Leadership

With such a strong demand for qualified teachers and above-average starting salaries for teachers, a postgraduate education course at Deakin leads to promising career opportunities.

BEN WHITBURNDOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY

‘I chose this field because I was motivated to learn about inclusive education from insider perspectives – in this case secondary students with diagnosed special needs – and examine how it might be developed. Deakin was an obvious choice because of its reputation for a strong research culture in education.’

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES Deakin offers short-term, intensive educational opportunities for anyone seeking professional learning, or as an alternative to full-time studies. All professional learning programs are informed by research and provide ‘options’ for professionals or students who wish to gain credit toward an elective unit within a Deakin undergraduate and/or postgraduate award course.

Our programs are well suited if you are interested in finding work as an integration aide in school settings, as well as allied health and education professionals wishing to improve professional skills and knowledge.

For more information about these courses, including fees, duration and prerequisites, please see pages 9–10.
