Skip’s Scoop In 2005, Mark Dever wrote a deceptively challenging little book
entitled “What Is a Healthy Church”. Its only 5” by 7”; has only 126
pages; no fancy charts or pictures. The book opens with a question – not
aggressive or threatening, it’s actually kind of innocuous. But the answer
to the question reveals WAY too much about the one who gives the an-
swer! That question is this: “So what are you looking for in a church?”
Just curious-- what would your response be? Begin rolling that
around in your mind. Give consideration to a secondary question on
what the ideal church would look like – fill in the rest of “The ideal
church is a place with _________________.”
Most folks really focus on their desires and needs, and can quick-
ly come up with them. This kind of question results in the reciting of a
list of qualifications -- some that are simple and obvious, and others that
are complex and convoluted – and almost all of which fulfill some de-
sires or needs of ours that we believe God should meet. You might find
your list to contain:
“Strong, Biblical preaching;”
“Fellowship with socially consistent, like-minded people;”
“Prayers that hold me up;”
“Beautiful, inspiring music;” or,
“A place to re-charge my spiritual batteries.”
Truthfully, there are as many answers as there are people, in all of their
stages of life!
Dever’s little book goes on to explore nine marks of a healthy
church, and how the church leadership and laity affect that church
health. But I want to leave one thought with you. In all the times that
you have been asked
“What are you looking for in a church?” -- in fact, in all the times
you’ve heard other people answer that same question -- how often have
you heard anyone respond by saying
“I’m looking for THE church to which God is leading me!” or,
“The ideal church is a place with opportunities for me to
respond to God’s personal call to me,
and for me to employ the gifts God has given me for
His Kingdom and His people!”
It’s great to know what WE want to find in a church, and what

WE believe God should provide for us. But it is infinitely greater and more valuable to know what GOD
wants for us (and from us) in the context of a faith community. I suppose we might change the question to,
“What is God looking for from me in His church?”
I would enjoy hearing your ruminations! Peace! Skip

Preschool News
Preschool will soon be in session and the sound of little people happily
playing and learning will fill the halls of the Children’s Wing. It’s been a
long, hot summer and parents and children alike are ready for school to
begin. The staff and I are eager to welcome everyone to our “family”
and get this school year off to a great start!
This month’s curriculum topics are “Families and the ABCs of Preschool.”
The devotion topic is the Ten Commandments and the character topic is
all about Good Manners.
Open house is Tuesday, September 6 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Classes
begin the following morning at 9:00 am.
We have so many friends to thank for helping us prepare for preschool:
*Thank you to Cindy Klempay for being our librarian and working so
hard to organize all of our books.
*Thanks to all of the volunteers who came out to help with the
Children’s Wing and playground clean-up day on Saturday, August
27. Thank you to Kathy Williams, Mary Beth Hock, Sonya Burgess,
Joe Bridger, Charlie Lane, Skip and Betsy Williams, Cheryle Shaffer,
Delores Riley, Ute Wolf, Leigh Adams, Christine O’Shea and Jaime,

in all of the rooms in the Children’s Wing.
*Thanks to the staff for working so tirelessly on their rooms and the
curriculum as they prepared for welcoming their children.
*Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Griggs
Scholarship Fund. You are a true blessing to several of our families.

God’s children.
Peace and prayers,
Judy Lane

Children & Youth Ministries
POWER KIDS BEGINS! Power Kids will begin on September 14, 2016 with dinner beginning at 6:00pm. The
program will start at 6:30pm and end at 7:30pm. Power Kids is for all children in the community who have
started Kindergarten through 5th grade. Each week we explore a Bible story and a Bible point, then it is rein-
forced by rotating to other stations, where they will experience something unique each week. They will
have the opportunity to interact with each other through games, snacks, object lessons, journaling, and
crafts. There is never a dull moment, and all children will enjoy a truly powerful evening every Wednesday
at Hampstead United Methodist Church. We do ask for a $3 donation to cover the cost of food and sup-
plies, and we are always looking for volunteers to provide dinner each week. If you would like to help with
this incredible ministry, please contact Melody Doyle at [email protected].
ATTENTION! Valuable spiritual training and life opportunities available. All you need is a willingness to
learn a huge eternal income available and potential bonuses. If you are looking to grow and learn, as well as
spend time with friends, don’t miss our weekly Youth Group meetings! Our first Youth Group meeting is on
September 8, 2016. The Middle school youth will meet at 6:00pm and end at 6:45pm. At this time fellow-
ship begins for all youth from 6:45pm to 7:30pm. At 7:30pm senior high youth begins, and middle school
youth get picked up. Senior high youth ends at 8:30pm. We ask for a $3 donation to cover the cost of food
and supplies, and we are always looking for volunteers to provide dinner each week. Our youth meetings
consist of discussing many topics that are on the minds of teenagers, in a comfortable, trusting, faith build-
ing environment. What’s on your mind? Join us Thursdays!
THE PUMPKINS ARE COMING AND WE NEED TO BE READY! Patch set-up will occur on September 17, at
10:00am in the morning. The pumpkins will arrive on September 24, at 9:00am. ALL YOUTH ARE EXPECTED
TO BE AT THE PATCH FOR THE ANNUAL PUMPKIN TOSS! Pumpkin bucks will be rewarded to any middle
or high school youth who dedicate time in the patch. Do you not know what pumpkin bucks are? Contact
Melody Doyle at [email protected] so I can tell you all about it! While the patch is open for the
month of October, we need many adult volunteers to supervise the youth during operating hours. Without
an adult, the patch will not open. This is the sole fundraiser for the youth, and it gives them the opportunity
to receive as much as $9/hr. (in pumpkin bucks) while working in the patch! Do not let the patch shut down
because of the lack of supervision! Please check the narthex for the sign-up sheets for the Patch. Help us to
make this year better than the last!
PILGRIMAGE PLANS ARE IN THE WORKS! Pilgrimage takes place November 11 – 13, 2016 and the HUMC
youth will be attending! We need many chaperons, and I would love to hear from you if you plan on return-
ing or if you have never been before. Join us for the event of a lifetime! In order for all reservations to be
made and accommodations, meals, extra-curricular activities, and vans reserved, I will need a basic head
count. Please respond by sending me an e-mail if you or your youth plan to attend
[email protected]. If you need more information regarding what Pilgrimage is all about, please
visit the following website, http://www.nccpilgrimage.org/

Music Notes
Hey Folks!
Fall is almost upon us, and with the coming season of color, comes the season of multi-faceted music
of this church! The Handbells will soon start swinging, the Cantata Choir and Orchestra will soon start re-
hearsals, and the Chancel Choir and Praise Team are ever-present! Add to that, the Praise Band, and what a
wonderful assortment of music we have to offer here!
HOWEVER…. For our Music Ministry to continue with quality music, we need musical people to
volunteer their talents to meet this end! For the last 4 months, I have written articles and posted papers, of
the need for SOMEONE to come play handbells! Is there no one who has played before and is longing to
play again?! PLEASE ask around! (Heavy sigh!)
Now we have Cantata coming up, with extra voices and instrumentation needed there! If you would
like to lend a voice or the playing of an instrument to this endeavor, please see me PRONTO! (The music is
moderately difficult, and instruments needed are wide-ranged, so we will need to see if your instrument is
right for the task. For example, kazoos and wax-papered combs, though wonderful in the right setting, proba-
bly wouldn’t be the right fit for us!) So again (just to make sure you understand the urgency here!), if you
would like to sing with us in the Cantata, or play an instrument, please contact me IMMEDIATELY! Sup-
plies are being ordered and gathered as I type! Let’s make sure we have those supplies for YOU when you
say “YES! I’m in!”
So… all in all…You get the gist! I’ve more than hinted! I’ve more than begged!! I’ve more than
pleaded!!! I’ve stopped just short of grabbing people by the ankles as they exit the church on Sunday morn-
ing, to come help us! If you ARE musically inclined, please consider these varied opportunities for musical
fun and good fellowship with other volunteer singers and musicians! We need you! Thank you for your sup-
port!
Yours in Song,
Patti

We would like to thank everyone that came out for our movie night to see War

way to help needy children in our area.
The OWLS will host a Dessert-Bar for our next meeting. We will meet on
Thursday, September 8th at 10 am in room 5/6. Jan Makaryk will have exciting news
about our December trip to Mike’s Farm. Make plans to attend and bring a friend!
In October we will be going to the Turtle Hospital in Surf City for a private tour.

The recent movie night presentation of ‘Courageous’ had a light turnout; how-
ever, donations raised for The Yahweh Center Children’s Village totaled
$182.00! Those that did attend spoke highly of the show and enjoyed seeing it.
Several comments made reference to ALL men needing to see this movie! Many thanks to the UMW
for their assistance in this endeavor!
Also, The UMM has been assisting in shrub removal at the Spirit Center (now completed) and chang-
ing out UV lights to LED lights throughout the church (the preschool wing is now completed). Kudos
to Joe Bridger and Larry David respectively for coordinating these two projects.
But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds and I will
show you my faith by my deeds. James 2:18
All men 16 years and older are welcome to attend UMM’s monthly meeting which is the first Satur-
day of each month. Breakfast and fellowship are always enjoyed!
Peace be with you,
Al Smith
United Methodist Men
We are now in the waiting period for school to start, get qualified children in the program, and start to
send backpacks home each weekend.
Recently, I talked with one of the principals, and she told me that her school was running out of plac-
es and spaces to put all the children. Over the past several years there has been a large influx of
new families in the area.
Thus, we are in need of food items as listed below. Hopefully, you will get in a regular pattern of
buying an item or two or three either week, bi-weekly, monthly, etc. Then, place them in the brown
MUNCH receptacle in the Narthex.
We always accept monetary donations. If by check, simply put MUNCH in the memo field, and the
monies go to our account!
Our most needed items are listed below.
· Pasta Sauce (24 oz. can)
· Pasta 1lb box
· Spaghetti O’s or store brand equivalent
· Cereal
· Canned chicken and tuna
· Tuna and Chicken “Helpers”
· Granola Bars, Peanut Butter Crackers
Monetary donations are always welcome. Checks made out to HUMC with “MUNCH” in the memo
field works!
Again, thanks for your generous support of MUNCH!

The Pumpkin Patch Pallet Dedication will continue through September 25, 2016. Please prayerfully consider dedicating a pallet in honor or memory of a loved one. Each pallet costs $25 or you can dedicate two for the price of $40. Why replace the old ones do you ask? To start, these are much sturdier, are made up of recycled plastic, will not attract bugs, lighter and compacted for easy storage, (which means they will take up a lot of less room). If you have ever joined us for either the set-up or clean-up of the patch, you will understand the necessity of them being lighter! We are also giving away all of the old pallets. If you know someone who may be interested in taking some, by all means, direct them to the Potting Shed out by the soccer fields, and take as many wooden pallets as their little heart’s desire! Pumpkin Patch set-up will be on September 17, 2016 at 10:00am. We will be placing all of the new plastic pallets out on that day and need as many working hands as possible. Youth are expected to be there setting up and pumpkin bucks will be rewarded to any middle or senior high youth who dedicate their time to the patch! THE PUMPKINS ARE COMING, THE PUMPKINS ARE COMING!! Mark your calendars for the an-nual pumpkin toss on September 24, 2016 at 9:00am. Many hands are needed not just from HUMC but from the whole Hampstead Community! This is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to so many who do not have a home church. Invite a friend, neighbor, football, baseball, or soccer teams! We welcome anyone willing to toss a pumpkin or fifty to get the patch ready for a fantastic month! Sign-up sheets are in the narthex for volunteering time in the patch. Remember that the patch cannot open without an adult present to chaperon the youth. There are two sign-up sheets, one for adults and the other for the youth. This ministry has been at HUMC for many, many years and is the sole fundraiser for the youth. This provides them the opportunity to go on many of the youth mission trips. Many thanks to all in advance for helping us out, and I look forward to seeing you all at the Patch! —Melody Doyle

Stephen Ministries
Pastor Skip will be on the front line of care during times of personnel crisis with mem-
bers of the HUMC congregation. But there are always many more needs for on going,
one-to-one care that he can’t effectively meet by himself. The Stephen Ministers of
HUMC are available to step in and give Christian care to those experiencing difficulties
in their lives.
A Stephen Minister is:
*A child of God who walks beside a person who is hurting
*A congregation member with gifts for caregiving, who was selected to serve in this role
*A lay person who has received 50 hours of training in providing emotional and spiritual care
*A caring, Christian friend who listens, cares, prays, supports and encourages
*Someone who will “be there” for the care receiver, meeting faithfully for an hour each week,
for as long as there’s a need
If you or some one you know could benefit from the care of a Stephen Minister, please be in touch with either
of us.
“Therefore encourage one another and build up each other.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11
HUMC SM will meet on Thursday September 8 in the library at 7:00 PM. We have taken a couple months off
for summer vacation and look forward to being together again.

HUMC Flower Ministry
We have volunteered to create 58 flower arrangements for Epicurean Evening. This is the
annual dinner and auction fund raiser for the Methodist Home for children. We ask for your prayers
as we represent HUMC at this event on September 8th, and we will take photos!
Thanks to the receptionist volunteers for keeping our entryway urns watered during the hot
summer months! The plants are looking good and we enjoy working with this group!
Our team is actively recruiting to build our numbers and grow our service. If you have ever
appreciated the beauty of flowers, you will enjoy serving on this team. We work with anyone
who has interest in this area! We are in need of people to break down the flowers on Sunday after
services (usually about 30-45 minutes) for delivery to shut ins and people who are ill as well.
Perhaps you would like to serve in a seasonal capacity or just have one hour a month to volunteer—
we can work with you! Rest assured that we will respect your time and value your service by not
requesting more than you can serve! You may contact any of our members to get on board! Brenda

Greetings from Queenie the Church Mouse!
Greetings to all at Hampstead UMC! It is so hard to believe that it is now September! Sum-
mer 2016 is drawing to a close, and fall is on the way. This is a time of transition as beach
chairs and boogey boards are put away and school books are opened. Soon the leaves will
begin to turn colors and fall to the ground, gently covering the earth in preparation for winter.
This is a beautiful time of the year, and yes, I admit, fall is my favorite season of all! It could
be from all the fond memories. You see, mice love the fall season as the leaves turn orange, brown, red, and
sometimes yellow and create a perfect camouflage blanket that mice can frolic in, running, bouncing, tum-
bling, and hiding. It is hard to find any one of us if we lay real still. Many fall evenings, sister Mabel and all
our cousins would play hide-n-seek for hours, only stopping when Mom called us in for supper as the sunlight
disappeared. Ah, fond memories of fall! So you can see why I treasure this time of the year. So, just saying,
if you spot movement in a pile of leaves, be careful, it may be one of my relatives! We are thankful to God for
giving us so many blessings and for giving us the different seasons of the year, each with their gifts for us to
enjoy.
We get a glimpse of God’s splendor and beauty each Sunday as we enter the sanctuary and gaze upon the altar
flowers. Each Sunday the flowers remind us of God’s handy work as a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors are
brought together to make magnificent bouquets of God’s handy-work. I am thankful for those who use their
gifts and talents to create such beauty for the Lord’s house. Each arrangement is a gift to the congregation by
another member in memory or honor of a loved one. What an awesome way to give back to the Lord while
blessing another.
Speaking of loved ones, have you seen the new pallets for the pumpkin patch this year? If not, check them out
in the narthex. The Lord willing, I hope to have a pallet named after me. I always look forward to sneaking
out to the pumpkin patch (my mode of transportation a secret for security reasons). I stay out of sight and
watch as the children and adult volunteers make children happy as they pick out their pumpkins. If you
haven’t volunteered to work in the patch, I surely know that there’s a place for you on the roster. Especially
during story time week!
I also want to remember to thank those who brought goodies for meetings, movie nights, and Sunday mornings
as I so enjoy the crumbs left behind. I had not eaten that much popcorn in ages!
In closing, I want to give a reminder to everyone to remember those who are unable to make it to church.
Take time to send a card, make a phone call, visit, and say a prayer. Momma always tells me, “Queenie,
when you visit another, and shine God’s light on their day, God will shine His light on you.”
God bless, and remember to rake those leaves carefully and leave a little for a mouse to play in.
—Queenie the Church Mouse

How many pencils are in your home? Something so simple, but we take this utensil for granted.
Our children in Vacation Bible School watched a teenagers’ story of going to Africa to help some school chil-
dren. She instructed one child how to write something and as she moved to the next child so did the ONE
PENCIL in the entire class. I just finished reading an UMCOR (United Methodist Committee On Relief) story
about 17,000 school kits like we prepared this spring being delivered to children living in rural poverty in
Kampong Chhnang province Cambodia. A ten-year-old student said, “Before having this kit, I had only a half
pencil and a thin notebook that would last just three months. Now I have everything I need to study for a
whole year!” Pencils Do Matter! —Peggy Harris

“…to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of
Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith…and become
mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.”
(Ephesians 4:12-13)
HUMC is cranking out great options for the Body of Christ in Hampstead.
We’ve been offered 2 outstanding movies: COURAGEOUS and WAR ROOM. Thanks go to
both Methodist Men and OWLS. Pastor Trudy and Mary Beth are currently sharing a Kay
Arthur study on Prayer “Lord Teach Me To Pray in Twenty-Eight Days.”
NOW IT’S TIME TO build on that foundation with a fall BIBLE STUDY.
· WAR ROOM Bible Study: 5 weeks, 3 days of homework each week, DVD clips
· Group discussion time, offered BOTH Wed mornings and Sunday evenings.
· Starting OCTOBER ending NOVEMBER before Thanksgiving Week.
· SIGN UP SHEET in NARTHEX. Open to men and women. Facilitator Sandy Smith.
PRAYER MINISTRY – SPIRITUAL FORMATION hopes you’ll get ‘plugged in.’
· PRAYER BOX (side door near food pantry) receives PRAYER REQUESTS from folks
who visit food pantry. YOU can PRAY FOR THEM: stop anytime in the CHAPEL.
Open the PLEASE PRAY FOR… (3 ring binder) and spend a few minutes with the
pain of our Hampstead friends
· e-Team WANTS You to PRAY FOR URGENT NEEDS in our church family. It’s so sim-
ple: tell [email protected] to put you on the e-Team. ONLY requests
for IMMEDIATE PRAYER are sent to the Team. PRAY WHERE YOU ARE. Experience
the POWER OF PRAYER with us.
· INTERCESSORY PRAYER GROUP meets Chapel, 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. Friday morn-
ings. We debrief and move into SILENT and/or SPOKEN PRAYER. We are mindful of
the one hour time slot. IN THIS SEASON can we afford NOT to Pray?
“Come and see,” said Jesus. It’s still a powerful witness to God’s grace. Find where you fit
into the Prayer Life of HUMC.
Blessings to you through Christ,

HUMC Board of Trustees
The Spirit Center has been sold to TKF Movers. Team Leader, John Phelps, presented the Board
with a recommendation and Bill of Sale which has been reviewed by the HUMC attorney. TKF Mov-
ers has committed to a $2,500 donation and assumes expenses in relation to the removal of the house.
Whereas no offers of purchase have been received the Board, the Board unanimously accepted the
offer from TKF. The property should be clear one week before the Fall Festival. If any problems
arise wherein the house cannot be removed by this date the removal will be delayed until after the Fall
Festival.
The rooms at HUMC may be looking a bit brighter! Team Leader Larry David has lead a dedicat-
ed group of guys in changing out all our room lights to LED. This will be a long term savings in elec-
tricity and longevity of bulb life. They have begun in the pre-school and hope to have all rooms com-
pleted by the time pre-school resumes in September.
Shirleen Spencer serves on many committees at HUMC, but she is Team Leader for the Spring
Cleaning and announced the 2017 date, so mark your calendars: SATURDAY, APRIL 1st!
Shirleen is also the team leader in research and development of a site for a Columbarium on the
HUMC campus. Shirleen is in the process of organizing a team and is actively looking for volun-
teers. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please contact Shirleen: 508-4777
DOT SuperStreet campaign: Please find the information on the small white desk on the right
before entering the office. These forms were handed out at the August 21st church services. If
you missed getting one we ask that you fill out your contact information on the top, fold, tape,
put a stamp on it and drop in the mail. Your Board of Trustees has contacted all of the politi-
cians and the appropriate agencies with a detailed letter noting all of the negative effects losing
our stoplight will create.
Tom Burns has volunteered to be our liaison with Logan Homes (the developer in process of site
planning building 460+homes by HUMC) to see if there are ways we can work together in any of the
sewage, water type issues that may be beneficial to us both.
The next scheduled meeting of the Board of Trustees is September 19, 2016 at 6:30 pm. If you have
a need to appear before the Board of Trustees please contact Brenda Sellers, (264-3864,

Laity Notes: Digital vs. Print Bibles
Today there are over 100 million Bible app users worldwide! More and more people are reading scrip-
ture from their smart phones and tablets instead of traditional print Bibles than ever before. Is this a positive
move to encourage or not? How do you feel about Bible apps or digital Bibles? Here are some points and ide-
as to think about.
Technology has seen Scripture move from parchment to paper to pixels, yet the message remains the
same. The format has changed and to read a verse in one format verses another does not measure faithful-
ness. The format does not change ones’ commitment to the truths of the Bible; it’s only a change in reading
format. There are different methods of learning for each of us, so choose the format that is right for you. One
advantage of a smart phone Bible is that you can pull up any version, or look up commentaries, or even check
on a Greek or Hebrew word. Some other points to consider: today the cell phone is the #1 means of commu-
nication and this is now how we connect. People that use smart phones use 10 apps per day. It is their pre-
ferred way of getting information. There are 2 billion smart phone users worldwide and that is expected to
double in the next 2-3 years. On the other side of these points are; the paper Bible does not rely on batteries.
When reading a paper Bible I won’t be distracted by a text or email notification. The Bible is usually larger
than a smart phone screen. You can write notes in a paper Bible and can use it for many years. Many smart
phone Bible users are reluctant to use their digital Bible during church, feeling that others may think that they
are texting, or emailing, and not being attentive.
So in the end it’s up to you. It would be ideal to have both a print and a digital version. There is no
“right” answer as to which is better. Some will prefer print while others digital. The more important thing is
to read Scripture and live it out among others. Our lives are often the only Bible some people will ever read!

Thank you to all who help make this event possible!
Church Office Volunteers Needed!
Our Church delivered 82 backpacks and loads of extra supplies to the
local schools. Thank you, Hampstead United Methodist Church for
your generosity for this very worthwhile mission. The school staff is
very thankful for our help!
UMW School Supplies Thank You!!
We are in need of volunteers to serve as church office
receptionists. You would only need to serve 1 or 2 days a
month during office hours (9:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Monday -
Thursday). It is easy work with friendly people who are
extremely grateful for your help!! Call or email Dixie
Hampel at 270-1480 or [email protected].
