Floyd, Harrison and Clark counties, all bordering the Ohio River and benefiting from a close association with Louis-ville, are part of the area referred to as Southern Indiana.

Rolling hills, untouched by the glaciers that flattened Northern Indiana, shelter sleepy little rural communities, thriving, revitalized historic towns and bucolic countryside.

Fiercely proud of their Hoosier identity, Southern Indiana residents are not ashamed to admit that they enjoy the ben-efits of living near the “big city” of Louisville, without the higher taxes and housing costs.

The region is conveniently located for business and travel, within a five-hour drive of Chicago, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Columbus and Nashville.

The Ohio River played a major role in the area’s development, helping Jeffersonville and New Albany build huge steamboat industries in the 1800s and leading to large roles in the Civil War and Underground Railroad.

The area is rich in history as well, with a number of historic sites playing host regularly to festivals and re-enactments. Corydon was Indiana’s first state capital, and also the site of the only Civil War battle fought on Indiana soil. And

Clarksville was arguably the true starting point of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. Many communities have historic districts where stately Victorian mansions survive, and a wave of revitalization has

seen other historic buildings renovated, restored and repurposed in recent years.Downtowns are being revitalized and once again teem with shops, restaurants, museums and people. The opening of the Big Four Bridge, a pedestrian-only span, has better connected the downtowns of Louisville and

Jeffersonville, and massive growth at River Ridge Commerce Center in Clark County is spurring development.Soon, the Ohio River Greenway will fully connect the riverfront of New Albany, Clarksville and Jeffersonville with a

walking and biking path.Welcome to our home. We hope you enjoy it.

outdoor pursuits. Swimming, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, bird watching, hiking, biking and more are readily available to

WINE, CRAFT BEER AND SPIRITS Kentucky is well known for its bourbon, and its influence is everywhere in the region. But Southern Indiana has carved out its own niche with wineries crafting vintages from locally grown grapes. The Indiana Uplands Wine Trail (indianau-plands.com) and the Hoosier Wine Trail (hoosierwinetrail.com) lists popular sites, including Huber’s Orchard and Winery in Starlight, which has branched out into distilling as well, crafting its own whiskey, rum, vodka and gin.Craft beer is also easy to find, from the Point Blank Brewing Co. in Corydon to the New Albanian, Donum Dei Brewery, and Floyd County Brewing Company in New Albany, to Red Yeti and Flat 12 Bierwerks in Jeffersonville.Keg Liquors in Clarksville and New Albany is a great package store with a huge list of import and craft beers. Bridge Liquors in New Albany also has a wide variety.

SPORTS

The Kentucky Derby reigns supreme one day a year – actually about 15 if you count the month of festivi-ties leading up to it – but there is no lack of spectator sports the rest of the year.

The Louisville Bats are the Class AAA minor league team feeding into the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. Their home, Louisville Slugger Field, hosts home games, along with giveaways and fireworks shows throughout the season.

Local college sports fans tend to be divided into three camps — Indiana University, University of Louisville and University of Kentucky — and the rivalry can be intense. U of L plays basketball at the KFC YUM! Center in downtown Louisville, and football at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium near the school’s campus. The univer-sity also has seen considerable success in baseball and soccer over recent years.

Speaking of soccer, Louisville is also home to two professional soccer squads, the Derby City Rovers and Louisville City FC.

In Indiana, Jeffersonville’s Sportsdrome Speedway offers short track auto racing, and is the only asphalt track in the region to feature both oval and figure-eight racing. Indiana University Southeast is also home to several college sports teams.

High school rivalries are taken seriously in Southern Indiana, with basketball and football playoff games often selling out. The area is also home to many golf courses, including Covered Bridge, which is owned by former PGA golfer Fuzzy Zoeller.
