Treasures for Generations

For 130 years the Royal BC Museum has been a collector, conservator and interpreter of our shared history. And in 1886 citizens of this new colony gathered together with a shared vision—a vision to preserve British Columbia’s history and tell the story of its people. It also marked the beginning of the Royal BC Museum, borne out of an urgency to protect a rich and valuable culture. While the museum’s humble first building on the legislative property is gone, that founding vision lives on.

It’s a vision that sees the museum as the preserver, educator and interpreter of history. A vision for sharing ideas, pioneering science and being at the forefront of new discoveries. Underpinning all of this is the principle that has endured for 130 years: a vision that allows British Columbians to become better citizens through access to our shared history.

Today, your museum holds some seven million artifacts, the single-most important repository of BC history. We have a bold plan to breathe new life into the museum and archives and ensure it continues to

fascinate and inspire many generations to come. That means enhancing our commitment to education. We see the Royal BC Museum as an educational hub, a place where learners of all ages can access our shared history. In an increasingly fast-paced world we plan to do more to create additional educational spaces within the museum and additional digital platforms to allow others to access the collection. It means strengthening our relationships with First Nations—and better understanding their stories. We have so much to learn.

And it means celebrating our link to the Pacific Ocean. The fabric of British Columbia is linked to the sea. We plan to bring the Pacific into the museum in a more substantive way.

Our land and its peoples have given us limitless opportunities. Opportunities to do more. Opportunities to ensure British Columbia’s museum—your museum—truly reflects you and our diverse province. At its heart, this is the story of people. The story of families.

While creating your own ideas, meet community members who have had inventive ideas about food production and are seeing these ideas through. Spring Break Camps: Focus On NatureAspiring shutterbugs can develop their skills by participating in a photography-inspired camp. Each week-long session will include a visit from 2015 Wildlife Photographer of the Year Rising Star Portfolio Award winner Connor Stefanison. Campers will learn about photo composition and storytelling, venture to Beacon Hill Park to capture dynamic nature shots and explore the Royal BC Museum’s Natural History collection.

Summer Camps: Camp MammothMillions of years ago, giants roamed the earth. Sometimes standing more than 14 feet tall, mammoths and mastodons towered over the lands … and now they’re coming to Victoria. This summer, campers will be on the lookout for these fascinating creatures. Campers will explore the feature exhibition Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age and the collection areas, build mini-dioramas, dig for fossils and much more.

Living Sustainably—Then and Now Camp 2016 This week-long camp investigates the topic of sustainability in exciting, hands-on ways. Based at both the Royal BC Museum and the O.U.R. Ecovillage in Shawnigan Lake, campers will learn from objects and archival documents and from the land. The camp will be a fun and adventurous

way to think of the many solutions needed to live a more sustainable life.

Three days of the camp are at the Royal BC Museum (Monday, Wednesday and Thursday), and two at the O.U.R. Ecovillage in Shawnigan Lake (Tuesday and Friday).

Traditional Tlingit Tattoo RevivalNahaan is of Łingít, Iñupiaq, and Paiute tribes. His body of work includes an array of traditional crest designs from several different tribes, as well as pre-contact methods of tattooing including skin stitch and hand poke applications and modern day tattoo gun work. In his talk he will address how cultural tattoos are healing the historical and present day traumas of colonization.

A Botanical Travelogue to the Scapegoat Wilderness Mark Egger, Research Associate at the Burke Museum of Natural History in Seattle, is an expert in the genus Castilleja, plants commonly known as Paintbrushes. Coastal Sound Youth Choir and Jeunes Chantures d’Acadie The Coastal Sound Youth Choir has become known in the Canadian choral community for their passionate and imaginative performances. last autumn, Dr Gennady Kamenev travelled from Vladivostok, Russia to

Victoria, British Columbia with a single purpose: to examine marine clams in the Invertebrate Collection of the Royal BC Museum. This may seem like quite a distance to travel for clams, but not when one considers the alternative.

Dr Kamenev is a researcher at the A.V. Zhirmunsky Institute of Marine Biology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is a taxonomic expert, with a fondness for deep-sea bivalves, particularly those that live at depths of 1000 - 6000 meters. Diving to the bathyal and abysal zones of the

ocean every time one needs to study a deep water clam is neither feasible nor efficient – hence the value of visiting a museum collection.

Prior to his visit, Dr Kamenev was in the process of studying a group of clams inhabiting the deep waters of the Bering Sea, Sea of Okhotsk, Kuril-Kamchatka and Aleutian Trenches. Surprisingly, he discovered a number of species remarkably similar to those living in the Northeast Pacific. By comparing his findings to specimens within the Royal BC Museum’s Invertebrate Collection, he expects to learn whether these species are either the same or unique.

Regardless of the result, each would tell an interesting story about deep-sea fauna across the vast North Pacific: either certain species are more connected than previously thought, or these species, if unique, have changed relatively little since divergence.

Such visits to our natural history collections are not rare. In addition to the thousands of specimens sent out as loans each year, more than 100 researchers from around the world travel to Victoria to use the Royal BC Museum’s collections and ultimately, to answer important scientific questions, ranging from traditional taxonomy and systematics to biodiversity, species at risk, invasive species and climate change.

It is always a pleasure to host visiting researchers. Our collections benefit tremendously from the shared expertise and knowledge, and as researchers, we broaden our own scope and understanding. But perhaps more importantly, this is what the collections are for – to share, to study, and ultimately, to learn more about the natural world.

Friday NightCreatively United presents What Can One Person Do When 7.3 Billion are Frying the Planet?, with international award-winning artist/activator Franke James. The event will also include the premier Victoria screening of Sea Blind, a 60-minute documentary about the cost of international shipping. Award-winning local filmmaker Sarah Robertson will discuss the making of this film as well as her experience at the 2015 Climate Conference in Paris, France.

Collect/Connect/Correct—Home Learners Series Museums collect objects and specimens to better understand who we are and where we are in the world. In this way, stuff matters. But people do as well. What decisions get made by individuals on what to collect? What are the ethics of collecting? How is data from collection material interpreted and communicated to the public? In this spring home learners block, we will dig deep into the Natural History collection at the Royal BC Museum, investigating the people and stuff that help tell the story of British Columbia. Home learners will also have an opportunity to make their own collection and tell their own stories.

Digitizing BC’s Textbook HistoryPresented by Pia Russell, Education & Children’s Literature Librarian, The University of Victoria Libraries

Russell will share news about a UVic project to create a digital collection of textbooks used in BC’s schools from 1871 to 1930. With their wide readership, these textbooks had considerable social influence and reveal the history of schooling in BC, and the emergence of a British Columbia identity.

Returning French Canadians to Victoria’s and British Columbia’s HistoryPresented by Jean Barman

Drawing from her prize-winning French Canadians, Furs, and Indigenous Women in the Making of the Pacific Northwest, Jean Barman will explore French Canadians’ contributions to Fort Victoria, explain their relationships with indigenous women, and argue for their critical role in the establishment of British Columbia.

This will be a special meeting offered jointly by the Friends of the BC Archives and the Association Historique Francophone de Victoria.

An Artist of Rare Ability: The life and Photographs of C.S. BaileyPresented by David Mattison

C.S. Bailey was the first Vancouver photographer to specialize in landscape and marine photography. Every year between 1888 and 1892 he documented the city’s growth from different vantage points, making him the eyes of the city. He also photographed commercial enterprises and created iconic images along the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Mammoths: Giants of the Ice AgeMillions of years ago, giants roamed the earth.

Often standing more than 14 feet tall, mammoths and mastodons towered over the lands of Europe, Asia and North America, including British Columbia, during the Ice Age.

Opening June 3, 2016, the Royal BC Museum will present a rare opportunity to see this larger-than-life exhibition, Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age. With a rich collection of fossils, casts, preserved flesh, immersive media and engaging interactives, Mammoths: Giants of the Ice Age will transport visitors to a time when giants walked among us.
