MILGATE’S NEWSLETTER IB World School Landscape Drive | East Doncaster Vic 3109 9842 7744 www.milgateps.vic.edu.au 2016 | Term 4 | Week 1 PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVE Welcome back all our Milgate families. We also warmly welcome a number of new students and their families to Milgate this term. We hope everyone enjoyed their break over the school holidays, ready for another term of engaging and exciting learning. CHINESE STUDENTS and TEACHERS Visiting from our sister school in Beijing This week we have 12 students and 4 teachers from our sister school (Experimental Primary School of Beijing Normal University) visiting Milgate Primary School. They arrived on Monday morning and will be leaving on Friday. We began the week with a school tour and then an assembly where the Chinese students sang and performed using Chinese yo-yos. Our Year 3 students performed a traditional Chinese welcome song for the guests. The Chinese students have been working in the classrooms with the Year 5 and 6 students and enjoying seeing how our students learn each day. Each of them made a presentation to their host class about China which is interesting for our students. On Tuesday we talked to the teachers about education in Australia and at Milgate PS and some of our student leaders made presentations to them about their learning at Milgate. The teachers have also spent time in classrooms observing the learning. On Thursday we are taking the students and teachers from our sister school to the Werribee Open Range Zoo for the day to go on a safari and they will also see Australian animals there. On Friday they will leave Milgate and visit Ballarat’s Sovereign Hill and then Phillip Island. Prior to coming to Milgate they went to the Gold Coast and Sydney and they will return to Beijing on Sunday night. Thank you to the parents and families who hosted the Chinese students for 3 nights – the students enjoyed this time with families and as many are only children, they have enjoyed being with families who may have more than one child. Thank you also to the parents who have come and interpreted each day and taken the Chinese teachers around the school visiting classrooms and interpreting for them. Thank you to the parents who provided food for the Chinese teachers’ lunch each day. It has been wonderful to have the assistance of all these parents with our visitors. WORLD TEACHERS DAY and EDUCATION SUPPORT STAFF DAY | Friday 28 October This is when we celebrate World Teachers Day in Australia. We are going to call it World Teachers Day and Education Support Staff Day so we can acknowledge the great work of our teachers and education support staff (including classroom, office, library, learning). This is a great opportunity for students to do something special for the teachers and education support staff. Be creative - some examples might be making a card, flowers, something students may think of themselves to give / do for teachers or Education Support staff to say thank you. The teachers and education support staff work very hard and are committed to providing the best learning opportunities, support and outcomes for all students. Let’s acknowledge them in special ways on this day. YEAR 2 CAMP | Camp Oasis Our Year 2 students were very excited and looking forward to their camp at Camp Oasis in Mount Evelyn this morning and the weather is looking great. They will be taking part in a variety of activities including: reptile eco centre, flying fox, bushwalking, candle making and bush cooking. A great opportunity for the students to challenge themselves and learn new activities as well as make new friends. NEW CLASSROOMS We will now be having two Mod 5 buildings (4 classrooms) installed at the front of the school ready to use in 2017. This is very good news as we need the extra classrooms to accommodate our students in 2017. There is quite a lot of construction on the site to do before the buildings come in. It has taken awhile as the gas and fire services had to be dug down deeper into the ground before work can begin. These works happened last week. The next stage is that a large amount of the dirt has to be dug out and when this happens there will be trucks, etc coming into the school to take the dirt away. This is so the buildings can be installed with no steps and students will walk directly out of the door onto the path. The path at the entrance to the school near the Manuka building has to be redirected as well. All the work will be finished this term and the classrooms will be ready for us to use at the beginning of 2017. We apologise for the inconvenience while the construction work is being done and we thank you for your understanding. Yours sincerely, Debbie Mierisch | Principal Karlie Gooding | Assistant Principal

Thank you for visiting us in 2016!

SPORTING NEWS Walk to School in October We are participating in VicHealth’s Walk to School month during October. This program is a free, easy and fun way for kids to get active this October. Victorian primary students are encouraged to walk, ride or scoot to and from school to kick-start healthy travel habits that can lead to good health for life.  It would be great to see as many students participating in this event during October and we would like to encourage as many students to come to school actively on our WOW Days (Walk and Wheels on Wednesdays). On Thursday 20th October will be holding an Active Travel Day Healthy Breakfast at school, as a final celebration of Walk to School month. There will be more information regarding this event nearer the time. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to chat with Mr. James Will.

MILGATE COMMUNITY BASKETBALL New Coordinator Required for 2017 Season Many of our students play in Milgate Community Basketball teams and it’s a great way to encourage friendships and being active. However we now need one or two parent volunteers to coordinate the team registrations and organisation. The teams can only play if there is a coordinator, so please consider putting your hand up for this role. For further details or to register your interest, please contact Kate at [email protected]. OFFICE NEWS Term 4 Excursion Payments | Due Sun 16 Oct These are still available to parents for payment on Compass, under Course Confirmations. Parents can pay online up until the end of Week 2 in Term 4. We would really appreciate parents processing their payments, via Compass preferably, by the due date. Thank you. EARLY CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION  Sunday 16 October 2016 With the usual busy end of year period of November and December, a group of Milgate parents are organising an early Christmas afternoon tea to celebrate the season of agape/unconditional love that we associate with Christmas, and to network with other Milgate families. This will be held at Sportlink Vermont South (2 Hanover Rd, Vermont South) from 2 to 5pm. Several table tennis tables will be set up in the room (and badminton courts can be hired if required). Families do not need to stay for the whole 3 hours, but it would be great if each family could bring a plate of finger food to share at afternoon tea time (about 3pm). Please RSVP Mei Lee (email: [email protected] or mobile: 0406 378 111) by 9 October, if you are able to come. We look forward to seeing you there.

Trivia Night | Saturday 15 October Tickets are limited but still on sale at $20 each or $18 each if you have a table of 10 ready to book. To book go to https://www.trybooking.com/MVWM. It promises to be lots of fun so talk to your Class Rep and ask to join their table, or create your own. BYO drinks and snacks. Over 18's only. We are still in need of donated items for the Silent Auction. This is a great opportunity to promote your business. Please email [email protected] for further details. Thanks to our sponsors:
