The Early Broadway Composers Broadway during the first decades of the twentieth century was dominated by a small group of composers and lyricists; Berlin, Cohan, Gershwin, Kern & Porter. Their shows were the hits of the day! They were referred to respectively as “the man who owned Broadway,” another the “father of American musical theatre,” “the greatest songwriter that has ever lived,” and finally, “the man who did it all - words and music.” We’ll sort out these legends and compare their works in this interactive session. CRN 31578 | Fee: $5 | 1 Friday | 12/9 | noon-1:30 PM | AST Room E202 Instructor: Barbara King, M.A. Crete and the Bull of Minos The largest of the Greek Islands is Crete which boasts a fascinating history of its own, dating from the ancient Minoans to its brutal occupation during World War II. We will explore what is known of the early days of King Minos and the half-mythic, half-historical labyrinth, as well as Crete’s subjugation during the Roman and Byzantine empires. A rugged and stunning landscape of mountains and deep valleys, including the amazing Samaria Gorge, serves as a fitting backdrop to the tumultuous history of this fabled island. In Spain, Tapas are small plates of appetizers that may be served hot or cold. We will be featuring three small plates, which make for delightful bites that you can take to a party or have at home as a light meal: Ham and Cheese Croquettas (bite-sized rounds similar to the French version of croquette); Manchego (a Spanish cheese) that we will stuff inside Roasted Baby Peppers and serve with a Spicy Tomato sauce; and a Saffron Shrimp and Spicy Sausage Skewer that can be served hot or cold and with two different dipping sauces. Or, if you have access to the Internet, you can download a registration form at www.manchestercc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016-FallCredit-Free-catalog.pdf and send in your completed form with a check or money order. You can also find a registration form in any printed MCC Credit-Free catalog. The easiest way is to register in person the next time you are on campus for a monthly OAA meeting! The Registrar’s Office is in the main lobby of the Lowe Building and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pre-registration allows the instructor and course schedulers to prepare materials for the course and to contact students in the event of a scheduling change or cancellation.

The UPDATE is published each month except July and August, for and by OAA members, and is edited with the assistance of MCC’s Credit -Free Programs Office.
