Chanco on the James

The Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia

Established 1968

Incorporated January 17, 2002

On behalf of the Board of Directors of Chanco on the James, I would like to extend a warm and heartfelt thanks to all of you for supporting Chanco in 2016. Each year, hundreds of lives are positively impacted by the programs and retreats we offer. Your financial support, participation, volunteerism, and advocacy make all of this possible.

Thanks to you, 2016 has truly been a record-breaking year for Chanco! We had our best fundraising year ever in 2016, coming on the heels of a record year in 2015. We also awarded a record number of scholarships for campers, and those campers, with help from the Camp Chanco Alumni Association, were able to break their own previous record of donations to the Change for Chanco program. In fact, we also had a record number of campers in 2016- just under 600! All of these achievements are a testament to the ongoing, and even increasing, growth and vitality of Chanco on the James.

The contributions we receive are all invested back into our center, ensuring that Chanco will continue to thrive. The 2016 Change for Chanco campaign has made it possible for us to install an exciting new high ropes element for older campers called a Superman Swing. Through generous support, we were also able to purchase equipment for several new activities to enhance our camp program including fishing and tubing on the James River, and a popular new camp game called 9 Square. This summer, in order to help families better connect with their campers’ summer experience, we added a new Closing Celebration at the end of each camp session, which was very well-received. In 2016 we also launched a successful Winter Camp to both introduce first-timers to Chanco and help returning campers stay connected to their friends during the school year. As you can see, we are always striving to make Camp Chanco even better. It’s no wonder that we’ve once again been honored by “Best of Virginia” as the best summer camp in the area.

However, as you know, Chanco is not just a summer camp. We also host and lead conferences, retreats, weddings, and reunions all throughout the year. Because of your generous support, we’ve also been able to make investments in 2016 that will improve the retreat experience for our guests, such as upgraded Wi-Fi coverage on site, and new lighting and landscaping in key areas. Through the efforts of our hardworking staff, board members, and volunteers, we continue to make improvements and repairs to the facilities as we are able. Chanco on the James currently offers clean and comfortable accommodations for our retreat guests in a lovely wooded setting on the banks of the James River. We also provide delicious meals and real hospitality. Yet, it has become increasingly clear that our old buildings need some major renovations, and there are numerous facility needs across the entire campus, which are limiting our ability to expand programming.

For this reason, in 2016 the Board of Directors engaged CCS, a well-respected national fundraising firm, to conduct a feasibility study for a future capital campaign. We were pleased to learn that Chanco has both the critical support and opportunity to launch a successful fundraising campaign. Among our priorities will be a fully renovated and expanded Dining Hall and a new Chapel. As we discern our path ahead, we will be seeking input and support from all of our stakeholders.

In 2018, we will celebrate our 50th year. It is incredible to think of all the people who have benefited from our programs over those many years. Chanco has a strong foundation, and we want to ensure that it has an even brighter future ahead in the next 50 years. I hope you find this opportunity as exciting as we do.

Once again, thank you for all you do to make our ministry possible. Because of you, lives are transformed at Chanco.

Blessings,Ashley Scruggs, Board President, Chanco on the James

In 2016, the eighth annual “Change for Chanco” program was an enormous success. The campers saved their change toward a stellar addition to Chanco’s camp programs: a Superman Swing high ropes element! Get ready to take your Chanco experience to new heights this summer! The campers have astonished us with their generosity, which along with the Camp Chanco Alumni Association and a matching donor, totaled just under $13,000!

2016 marks the eighth successful year of youth fundraising at Chanco. Additions to camp such as a 32’ rock climbing wall, disc golf, a new regulation sized Ga Ga pit, enlarged and repaved basketball court, tether ball, new archery equipment, and paddle boards are all a reality thanks to our generous campers and camper families! Our youth remind us that no one is too young to make a difference. As arts and crafts at camp has had no home of its own, for 2017 we are very excited to announce that an Arts and Crafts Pavilion will be our 2017 Change for Chanco project! So save that change and get ready to make a difference at Chanco!

Paddle boards were made possible by 2015 Change for Chanco and get ready to take your adventures to new heights this summer with the Superman Swing made

possible by 2016 campers! GO CAMPERS! You prove no one is too young to make a difference!

Chanco’s Philanthropic Support:

Friends of Chanco Make The DifferenceChanco is counting on you!

Make your donation to the Annual Fund today!

With so many choices in charitable giving, why should you donate to Chanco? Listen to the words below from a 2016 camper parent to hear of a life positively impacted by a Chanco scholarship:

“I cannot express my true thankfulness to you and your staff. Both of them truly look forward to camp and being able to tell them that they will be able to come to camp will make them over and beyond excited. They have learned so much from the time that they have been with Chanco and I could never express my gratitude for what your friend (donor) has done. When I get myself picked back up and things on the right path I would love to be able to pay it forward to a family in need. The Lord does indeed know when to pick someone up and hold them tight just when they need it and this has shown me that I can keep going as hard as things can get.”

Whether at camp or at a retreat program, thousands of people of all ages and over many generations have had formative experiences at Chanco. But we can’t do it without you. Your gifts enable us to offer scholarships to youth in need, to improve programming, to keep costs low so that any adult or young person can attend a program at Chanco, not just the wealthy. You make it happen.

Please prayerfully consider giving your best gift this year so we can continue our renovations to property and programs, offer scholarships, and continue to keep costs low to our guests. What does a donation to the Chanco Annual Fund do?

The Annual Fund in 2016 made many Chanco needs a reality, such as:• A record for financial assistance was set in 2016

with $46,700 awarded including scholarships to multiple children from Boy’s Home and ForKids, organizations for children in need

• New tube for waterfront that can seat multiple campers for more tubing activities & new fishing equipment

• New retreat programming such as Homecoming Weekend and Virginia Camp and Retreat Leaders Conference

• New closing camp celebration at end of each session

• Upgraded internet

Chanco on the James Endowment Funds

Chanco on the James has six endowment funds. The names of the funds and December 31, 2016 balances are:

The Chanco (Mabry Memorial) Fund $623,013The Chanco Scholarship Fund $54,954The Taylor Family Memorial Fund $21,253The Peter S. Hogg Memorial Fund $7,129The Chanco Alumni Fund $7,869The Rev. Jaque and Betsy Ambler Fund $9,964

TOTAL: $724,182

The Chanco (Mabry Memorial) Fund provides funds to meet general operating needs, as determined by the Board of Directors.

The Chanco Scholarship Fund, the Taylor Family Memorial Fund, the Peter S. Hogg Memorial Fund and the Rev. Jaque and Betsy Ambler Memorial Fund provide financial assistance for campers who could not otherwise afford to come to Chanco.

The Chanco Alumni Fund provides funds to pay for camp projects or camp scholarships. In general, these funds will be used to improve the camp programs and facilities and to award scholarships to campers.

For 2017, the distributions from the six funds is expected to be $44,000.

Chanco’s Board of Directors encourages gifts to one of the endowment funds so that Chanco can be truly independent and self-financing and its future secure. Establishing an endowment fund creates a lasting legacy that will honor the donor, family or loved ones in perpetuity. Individuals who wish to establish an endowment fund with a particular name and/or purpose may do so by making a significant contribution that is restricted for a specific purpose (i.e scholarships, camp programs, general operating).

Endowments may be established via a single donation or through gifts made over time. Endowment funds are kept separate from the operations fund of Chanco and are invested for long-term stability and growth.

The 2016 Camp Chanco campers say, “Thank you for your support of Chanco!

You make the difference!”

If you have an interest in establishing an endowment fund, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Executive Director, Gareth Kalfas, at 888-7CHANCO (888-724-2626) or Development Director Talley Banazek at 804-399-4019.

The Vision of ChancoFrom Our Bishop

"I envision Chanco being everything it currently is and much, much more. I see it as a place with the potential to be the true spiritual heart of Southern Virginia - a place where people come from all over for spiritual formation, refreshment and worship, a place characterized by Christian hospitality.  I see the summer camp as a place for our young people to grow in their spiritual awareness and to begin to find their place in the community of the baptized.   And finally, I see it as a place that draws in people from both inside and outside our Church, giving us an opportunity to share with them God’s love as revealed in the beauty of creation."
