THE CAR INDUSTRY -

THE GREATEST

ELECTRONICS

OPPORTUNITY OF

ALL?

The renaissance of the UK car industry has been one

of the great industrial success stories of recent years. Since 2012, £15 billion has

been invested by a combination of vehicle manufacturers and component

suppliers. The results speak for themselves. Firstly, car manufacturing is up by

60% since 2009 to 1.6 million cars a year and, secondly, the proportion of local

content in British cars has risen from 36% in 2012 to 41% in 2015, reversing a 30

year decline.

The best news from the point of view of the electronics sector is that the UK now

concentrates on premium cars, where the electronics content is highest. Even our

smallest vehicles, like the Mini and the Nissan Juke, are content-rich models, while

our biggest manufacturer is Jaguar Land Rover making 500,000 high-specification

cars a year.

One of the reasons for the recent success has been the exceptionally close

relationship that has developed between the UK car industry and the British

government. In 2009, both sides agreed to set up the Automotive Council which

established the three strategic priorities for the industry:

Increased R&D

Stronger supply chain

Improved workforce skills

In terms of R&D, the Advanced Propulsion Centre was established in 2013 with an

unprecedented budget of £1 billion (£500 million from government, £500 million

from industry). This finances the development of low-carbon propulsion, ranging

from more efficient petrol engines to electric and fuel-cell vehicles. In 2015, it was

followed by the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV), which has

EDITORIAL

JAY NAGLEY, UKTI

AESIN Capability Directory 7

a £200 million budget (again 50/50 joint government-industry funding) to help

develop the technologies for self-driving cars.

The government also set up the Automotive Investment Organisation (AIO) in

2013, which is a team of ex-car industry executives and civil servants working

together to bring in foreign investment to the UK car industry. It is also

increasingly helping UK automotive companies export their products and

expertise around the world. In its first three years, it created or safeguarded over

19,000 jobs – well ahead of its target of 15,000.

This combination of a robust infrastructure and a booming industry makes

automotive a key market for the UK electronics industry. Many of the future

requirements of the automotive sector will come from industries where the UK is

already a leader, such as gaming, simulation and data analytics. Even the

traditional mechanical aspects of the car are steadily being electrified – this year,

the first (British developed) electric supercharger went into production for Audi.

Within five years, the powertrain of most cars will feature some degree of

electrification, even if the car does not feature the battery which has traditionally

been associated with hybrids and electric vehicles. The development of 48v

architecture opens up a whole new market for the electrification of the

powertrain.

Through the AIO, many car manufacturers and Tier One suppliers express an

interest in innovative British technology: they are well aware that the country

which dominates Formula One ( seven of the 11 F1 teams are based in the UK) is

a nation which contains a great deal of cutting-edge technology. Major Tier One

suppliers from overseas are looking carefully at the UK technology landscape for

innovative businesses that can help them develop new products. The potential

provided by Tier One suppliers should not be underestimated: they have huge

experience in bringing products to market at a price and quality acceptable to

the car manufacturers. However, a lot of their new concepts were actually

initiated by small companies who successfully got the idea to the prototype

stage.

Indeed, the car manufacturers have never been more open to new ideas. The

industry may look relatively unchanged from the outside, but its business model

has changed radically in recent years. In design terms, it was based for decades

on progressive refinement of well-established principles. However, in the last few

years, the industry has come to see that it on the brink of its greatest revolution

since the development of the moving production line over a century ago. The two

great themes of electrification and Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs)

mean that the car is being reinvented – and the car companies want to be doing

the re-invention. Some in Silicon Valley deride the car industry as dinosaurs, but

the car companies are quite smart enough to understand that what happened to

Kodak and Nokia could happen to them if they do not adapt to new technology.

Page 8: 2016/17 - NMI · automotive a key market for the UK electronics industry. Many of the future requirements of the automotive sector will come from industries where the UK is already

8 AESIN Capability Directory

Car manufacturers know they need help in navigating these uncharted waters,

and they are willing to work with previously unknown companies who can help.

Their biggest fear is being left marooned as the waters close in around them.

It is also worth bearing in mind that there is much less chance of having a

dialogue of the deaf than there used to be. Car manufacturers have been

recruiting executives from the hardware and software industries to head up new

departments, so new electronics suppliers are as likely to be talking to an ex-

colleague in a car company as a 30-year industry veteran. In fact car companies

are increasingly separating concept development from purchasing. They

understand that handing over innovative new products to purchasing to

negotiate a price cut will kill the project stone dead, so they are working more

carefully with partners to develop components to a much higher level before the

purchasing negotiations start.

Whether an electronics company is looking to partner with a Tier One supplier or

car manufacturer in the UK, or is looking to export to overseas customers, the

Automotive Investment Organisation (AIO) is the one-stop shop that can help.

With specialists that have come in from the car industry, the AIO has the ability to

make introductions and facilitate agreements. As the AIO is all about bringing

together innovative new SMEs, Tier One suppliers and car manufacturers, we

very much welcome a high quality directory, which will make that process easier.

I warmly welcome the publication of this

comprehensive UK Automotive Electronics

Capability Directory by the Automotive Electronic

Systems Innovation Network (AESIN). I am also

honoured that AESIN has chosen to launch the

Directory at the Cenex LCV2016 event (www.cenex

-lcv.co.uk).

As someone who began his business career in industrial market research, I

learned the value of industry directories first hand. My research tasks required me

to identify and engage with UK and international companies in a wide variety of

industry sectors, from chemicals to electronics, fertilisers, metals, glass and

automotive, among others. I spent many hours in the British Science Reference

and Patent Office library, off Chancery Lane in London, reading through industry

directories and noting company details. I would then return to my desk to either

telephone interview or schedule meetings with those organisations to further my

research. The more comprehensive the directory in terms of reporting capabilities,

the better I fared in answering the market research questions posed by senior

managers from sales, purchasing, business analysis and planning roles.

Today the internet makes large quantities of information readily available, but the

sifting of disparate sources of information is a time-consuming chore, whereas

reference documents such as directories provide clear and consolidated

knowledge summarised in easily accessible and digestible format. For this latter

reason, directories retain their relevance as a gateway to identify organisational

capabilities and secure contact details for key organisations. If anything, their

value has increased because the web makes them immediately accessible to

senior as well as junior managers worldwide, 24 hours a day and 365 days in the

year – something a reference library could never match. Industry directories

work hand in hand with trade shows as the means by which companies showcase

capabilities.

As the UK’s premier technology showcasing and

networking event for the low carbon vehicle

community, the Cenex-LCV event attracts a variety

of attendees, whether as exhibitors or visitors, to

network with peers involved in motor industry

research and innovation. The Cenex-LCV event

attracts more than 2,500 attendees from more than

1,000 organisations, with at least 200 exhibiting.

One of the key priorities for the Cenex-LCV event is

to showcase UK capabilities in what are commonly

referred to as the “sticky” or “strategic”

technologies, as prioritised by the UK Automotive

Council. Of these technologies, all but lightweight

vehicle and powertrain structures are critically

dependent on automotive electronics. This is

particularly the case for power electronics and

intelligent mobility.

For the UK to lead in these strategic technologies,

there needs to be a supportive supply chain from

the automotive electronics sector that understands

and is willing to invest in the opportunities offered

for the short, medium and long term. Investment

will only be realised when opportunities and risks are understood, and de-risking

requires that accurate information flows between organisations within innovation

networks.

Robert currently represents Cenex on the Technology Group of the UK’s

Automotive Council and the Industry Advisory Group of the InnovateUK Low

Carbon Vehicle Innovation Platform which funds low carbon vehicle Research,

Development and Demonstration.

Robert is currently Chair of UK EVSE

(www.ukevse.org.uk) which represents the interests of

charge point providers and e-mobility service

providers active in the UK market. He is also a Director

of the Advanced Propulsion Centre, Scottish Hydrogen

and Fuel Cell Association and the Electric Corby

Community Energy Company.

Experience Like

Never Before Personal computing has entered a

new era. Instead of relying on a

single device, we are surrounded by

multiple devices at home and

work—laptops, a family computer,

help us stay connected and

At Intel, we see technology

as more than a practical

extension of our natural, creative selves, elevating our expectations of how

intuitive and helpful our devices and environments should be, whether it’s

proactively responding to needs, freeing from wires that leash us, or ridding the

need to memorize countless passwords.

We are determined to make technology more natural. Changing everything takes

everyone, and Intel is leading the way. Bringing together an entire ecosystem to

electronics products and connected

car solutions that deliver a rich,

connected experience for drivers

and passengers.

As one of the most recognized

automotive suppliers in the world,

Visteon is technology-driven,

flexible and enjoys a diversified

customer base and broad global

footprint.

The cockpit electronics market is

one of the fastest-growing

segments of the automotive industry – expected to be 40 to 45 percent of the

industry’s total buy in the next decade. As one of the world’s three largest cockpit

electronics providers – and the only one focused exclusively on this segment –

Visteon is well-positioned to capitalize on this growth.

Today, automakers generally offer consumers cockpit electronics products

separately, but that is expected to transform to a holistic experience driven from

an integrated, single device. Electronic module consolidation will bring new

opportunities to enhance the user experience for driver-driven vehicles, semi-

autonomous vehicles, and eventually fully autonomous vehicles.

Visteon’s 11,000 employees around the world are dedicated to applying our

talent, technology and global resources to this exciting transformation of the

vehicle cockpit electronics experience.
