Encouragingthecorevalues,reputation,positivebehavioursandattitudesofwaterpolo

Think.Act.Play.WaterPoloisagamesteepedintraditionandawonderfulsporttoplay.Itcanhaveapositiveinfluencethatenrichesthelivesofallinvolved.

Providingasafe,fairandinclusiveenvironmentforeveryoneinvolvedinoursport,andensuringthatourcorevalues,goodreputationandpositivebehavioursaremaintainedisapriorityofWaterPoloAustralia.

Think.Act.Play.isanawarenesscampaigndesignedtopromotepositivebehavioursbyplayers,coaches,managers,officialsandspectatorsthatupholdthevalues,reputationandspiritofWaterPolo.

Think.Act.Play.wasfirstintroducedatthe2015U16NationalChampionshipsasapilotthat’stothepartnershipofNSWSportandRecreation;andfollowingtremendoussupportandenthusiasmfromthewaterpolocommunity,hasbecomeapermanentcampaignforthesport.Think.Act.Play.isdeliveredthroughnumerousinitiativesincluding:

• Eventbriefings–discussionandreminderstocoachesandofficialsatnationaleventstoreinforcethebehaviorexpectationsandhighlightopportunitiestofurtherengagewithThink.Act.Play.atthatevent.

• Athleteengagement–athletesparticipatingineventsareencouragedtosharethemessageandtheirtakeonthevaluesofteamworkandrespectthroughsocialmediaandthecampaignhashtag#ThinkActPlay.

• Positivemessaging-keymessagesencouragingfairplayandpositivesportingbehaviorwillbedisplayedaroundeventvenues,onclothingandsignageandviasocialmediatocontinuallyremindthewaterpolocommunity.

• Post-gamehandshake–encouragedfollowingallgamesatalllevelstotakeplacepoolsideandinvolveplayers,coaches,managersfrombothteamsandreferees.

• PoolMarshalls–willplayavitalroleinencouraginggoodbehaviouramongstspectatorsatevents.

• Goodsportaward–willbeawardedfordisplaysofexemplarysportingbehaviourthroughoutnationaltournaments.

• Champions–WaterPolorolemodelswillbeutilisedinpromotionalinitiativesandcompetitionsfromtimetotime.

• EducationModules–withinallnewaccreditationcoursesadedicatedmoduletoThink.Act.Play.exploreshowindividualscanembodytheprinciplesofThink.Act.Play.andstrategiestoactasrolemodelswithinthewiderwaterpolocommunity.

TherearethreeslogansthatunderpintheThink.Act.Play.programaimedatpromotingpositivebehaviourandrespect.Eachsloganisrelevanttoeveryoneinvolvedinthegame.

Theslogansinclude:

Thinkbeforeyouspeak:Whatyousayanddoshapesthecultureofoursport.Yourwordscaninfluencethewaypeopleareseenandtreatedbyothers,andthewayinwhichpeoplefeelaboutthemselves.Itcanalsoimpactthewaythecommunityperceivesoursport.Remember-whatyousaymatters.

Actwithrespect:Showingrespectandtreatingeveryonefairlyisjustasimportantasthegame.Nomatterwhoyouareorwhereyoucomefrom,treatingeachotherwithrespectanddignityensureseveryonecanenjoythegame.Whetheryou’replaying,coachingorcheeringfromthesidelines-respectthereferee’sdecision.Remember-toearnrespectyoumustgiveit.

Playinthespiritofthegame:Thewayyouplay,coachandsupportsaysalotaboutyourcharacter.Playinginthespiritofthegameismorethanjusttherules.Playersthatkeeptheircoolunderpressure,evenwhenthingsarenotgoingtheirway,haveabetterchanceofwinningthegame.Coachesthatencouragesportsmanshipgetthebestfromtheirplayers.Parentsthatsetagoodexamplehelptheirchildrenenjoythegame.Remember-takeresponsibilityforyouractionsandplayinthespiritofthegame.

3. Controlyourtemper.Verbalabuseofofficialsandsledgingotherplayers,deliberatelydistractingorprovokinganopponentarenotacceptableorpermittedbehavioursinanysport.

4. Workequallyhardforyourselfand/oryourteam.Yourteam’sperformancewillbenefitsowillyou.

5. Beagoodsport.Applaudallgoodplayswhethertheyaremadebyyourteamortheopposition.

6. Treatallparticipantsinyoursportasyouliketobetreated.Donotbullyortakeunfairadvantageofanothercompetitor.

7. Cooperatewithyourcoach,teammatesandopponents.Withoutthemtherewouldbenocompetition.

8. Participateforyourownenjoymentandbenefit,notjusttopleaseparentsandcoaches.

yours.2. Applaudgoodperformanceandeffortsfromallindividualsandteams.Congratulate

allparticipantsontheirperformanceregardlessofthegame’soutcome.3. Respectthedecisionsofofficialsandteachyoungpeopletodothesame.4. Neverridiculeorscoldayoungplayerformakingamistake.Positivecommentsare

motivational.5. Condemntheuseofviolenceinanyform,whetheritisbyspectators,coaches,

IMAGESOFCHILDREN WATER POLO AUSTRALIA’S POSITION ON TAKING IMAGES OF CHILDREN Imagesofchildrencanbeusedinappropriatelyorillegally.WaterPoloAustraliarequiresthatindividualsandassociations,whereverpossible,obtainpermissionfromachild’sparent/guardianbeforetakinganimageofachildthatisnottheirown.Theyshouldalsomakesuretheparent/guardianunderstandshowtheimagewillbeused. Torespectpeople’sprivacy,wedonotallowcameraphones,videosandcamerastobeusedinsidechangingareas,showersandtoilets.Whenusingaphotoofachild,wewillnotnameoridentifythechildorpublishpersonalinformation,suchasresidentialaddress,emailaddressortelephonenumber,withouttheconsentoftheparent/guardian.Wewillnotprovideinformationaboutachild’shobbies,interests,schoolorthelike,asthiscanbeusedbypedophilesorotherpersonsto“groom”achild. Wewillonlyuseimagesofchildrenthatarerelevanttooursportandwewillensurethattheyaresuitablyclothedinamannerthatpromotesparticipationinthesport.Wewillseekpermissionfromtheparents/guardiansofthechildrenbeforeusingtheimages.Werequireourmemberstateandterritoryassociationsandclubstodolikewise.
