The African Screen Network

The objective of the African Screen Network is to provide a platform for the coordination and promotion of contemporary African cinema across the continent. Through the creation of a sustainable screen network, the ASN seeks to act as a vehicle for the expansion of audience access to, knowledge of, and demand for African film.

2016/2017 Film Programme

For this initial phase, the ASN offers 6 exceptional contemporary African feature films & documentaries.

Network Partners:

The roles of network partners will include:

• Committing to screening at least 3 of the films offered with a minimum of one screening per film. If an organization or institution the minimum screening rate will be €100 per screening depending on venue size. Courier costs would be an additional charge.

• Distribution of supplied and additional marketing materials.

• Feedback on the screenings including audience reports and photos.

The potential of the African film industry has long been inhibited by challenges of distribution and exhibition of African and diaspora cinema on the continent. In particular, a coordinated and concerted strategy across countries is needed to develop audiences for African content in the region. The lack of networks and resources of independent cinemas has often meant limited access to quality content. As a result, African audiences rarely see their own films or those of the diaspora on their local big screens. At the same time, cinema attendance is on the rise in many countries, creating a space for a greater diversity of African content.

SYNOPSISSudan is doing everything it can to rid itself of the rebel forces in the Blue Nile area and the Nuba mountains. This includes obliterating their base. Their base is the villagers who have been forced to gather in mountain hideouts or refugee camps. The bombings continue but so does the resistance, led by the rebel forces. Director, hajooj kuka, was on the ground filming for over eighteen months, creating a film that traverses through the lives of displaced people who have lost everything. Yet, instead of broken people, we find a vibrant community of people with purpose and energy in the face of conflict. They respond to the violence with singing, dance, music and laughter. Through this journey we become aware of a conflict that stems from a war on identity.

SYNOPSISRun escapes just after killing his country’s Prime Minister. But in order to do so he had to act as a mad man wandering through the city. His life comes back to him in flashes: his childhood with Tourou when his dream was to become a rain miracle-worker; his adventures with Gladys the Eater; and his past as a young member of the militia in the heart of the political and military conflict in the Ivory Coast. Yet Run did not choose any of those lives. He fell into every life by running from another. And that’s why they call him Run.

SYNOPSISFollowing Robert Mugabe’s contentious 2008 presidential win, Zimbabwe convened a bipartisan constitutional committee in an effort to transition the country away from its corrupt authoritarian leadership. Two men from rival political parties were appointed to the committee: Paul Mangwana and Douglas Mwonzora. Should they fail at securing maximum influence for their respective political parties on the provisions in the new constitution, dire consequences will loom. As the two begin to navigate their uncertain course, an uneasy alliance begins to form.

Filmed over three years with unprecedented access to the two political rivals overseeing the committee, this riveting, firsthand account of a country’s fraught first steps towards democracy plays at once like an intimate political thriller and unlikely buddy film.
