THE OHIO CASA/GAL ASSOCIATION is part of a national network that recruits, screens, and trains volunteers to serve their local communities as court appointed special advocates.
Advocating in court for the best interest of children who are abused or neglected, CASA volunteers restore hope and provide much-needed stability in the children’s life. These specially trained individuals help judges make better-informed decisions about permanent placement.

EXPANSION PROJECT MAINTAINS PACE
The Ohio CASA/GAL Association expansion project continued to make progress during 2016.
New programs came on board in Clinton, Union and Ashland counties, bringing the year-end total to 40 programs serving 47 counties. The growth enabled CASA volunteers to serve more than 8,000 children.
The expansion project began with a $2 million grant from Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine in 2013. Progress since then has been significant.
During the period between August 2013, when the project began, through the end of 2016, the number of counties served by a CASA program has grown from 37 to 47, a 27 percent increase.
In addition, the number of CASA programs is up 14%, from 35 to 40.
The number of children served is up 15 percent, from 7,591 to 8,752.
The expansion project is expected to close having met its goal of service to 50 counties. With new and expanded programs reaching full capacity, a second goal of serving 10,000 children is in sight.
The number of volunteers has remained steady throughout the life of the project at around 2,000. Volunteer recruitment and retainment remain a challenge nationwide and will be the focus of new growth campaigns.
JULYThe Ohio CASA network expands to 39 programs serving 46 counties with the addition of the Clinton County CASA and Noble County CASA programs.
AUGUSTThe Ashland County CASA Program comes on board, expanding the reach of the network to 47 counties served by 40 programs.
