Grant will preserve musical heritageSINGLE Gloucester, a folkarchive project developed byGloucester Traditions, hasbeen awarded a HeritageLottery Grant of £27,000 topublish songs from Glouces-tershire and South Glouces-tershire online. The old county has a rich
history of folk music andsong and some of our localsongs are known the worldover, but there are hundreds
more Gloucestershire songsthat lie forgotten and unpub-lished in manuscript and insound archives. Gloucester-shire Traditions have a planto put this right and publishall of the known songs andtunes from the county on aneasily accessible website.“There are over 1,000 folk
songs and tunes collectedin the county,” says GwilymDavies, one of the instigators
of the project, “who knowshow many of these will be-come the popular songs ofthe future?”The project is ambitious
and is the first of its kindanywhere in England. It willtranscribe each song intoeasy-to-download formats, in-cluding songsheets, MP3 andMIDI files.Anybody interested in fam-
ily history will also benefit
from the website, as CarolDavies explains, “With eachsong we are also research-ing the person from whomit was collected. This meansthat youmay find one of yourancestors is represented andlearn a song that was sung inyour family a hundred yearsago. In many instances wehave original field record-ings, so you can actually hearthe voices of history.”
The project starts now, withtraining for volunteers tolearn how to transcribe thesongs into different formats. The next few months will befocused on bringing themate-rial together and building thewebsite. Anyone who wouldlike to volunteer or findout more about the projectcan make contact throughgloucestershiretraditions.co.uk

BACK in Shakespeare’s daythere were only men in thea-tre companies.Times have changed, and
most performing groupshave plenty of women andgirls. But the girls of Your Call
Theatre Group, based inThornbury, are finding them-selves heavily outnumberedby the boys.“Ours is a small, friendly
and happy group, currentlywith 14 members aged be-tween 13 and 19, but only fourof them are girls. It’s unu-sual, and we’re not sure quitehow it happened,”said chair-man Jill Dimond.“Everyone is welcome,
and everyone takes an ac-tive part. In our shows, boyssometimes take female rolesand vice versa. It reallydoesn’t matter, and the showsare always of a high stand-ard.”Your Call’s next production

SIX years ago Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellow-head, bought a violin. It had all the appearance
of a new instrument but thelabel inside gave the date1915 and the name Richard SHoward.Research revealed that the
violin had been made — butnever finished — by a luthierand occasional music hallperformer from Leeds calledRichard Spencer Howard. He had been conscripted in
1916 at the age of 35 and two
years later was killed duringthe battle of Messines Ridge. The pieces of his violin
were given to his daughterRose in a manila envelopeand she kept them all her life.On her death, the parts
were sold and the violin wasfinally finished by luthierRoger Claridge in 2007.The discovery of this his-
tory inspired Sam to createa multimedia performancetelling the incredible story ofthe fiddle that it took nearly100 years to complete.
Collaborating with award-winning story-teller HughLupton, fellow Bellowheadbandmate Paul Sartin andacclaimed concertina playerRob Harbron, Made in theGreat War brings the realityof the First World War into2014, as Sam performs theshow with the actual fiddle.
Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle:Made In The Great War is atCheltenham Town Hall onWednesday, September 3, andat Colston Hall, Bristol, onSunday, September 7.

trainingwhileyou get paidNEW figures from theDepartment forEducation show thenumber of school leaverstaking up apprentice-ships has risen bymorethan 15 per cent in thelast year.InMarch 2013 the num-
ber of 16- and 17-yearolds in apprenticeshipswas 41,738. This year, inMarch, there were 49,228.Apprenticeships have
changed a lot over thelast few years. They were re-designed
with help frommorethan 400 businesses.Increasingly, appren-
ticeships are being seenas a respected alterna-tive to academic study. What is an apprentice-ship?An apprenticeship is a
job with training. You’llbe able to earnmoneywhile you’re learningand have paid holidays.
If you live in England, are over 16 years old andnot in full-time educa-tion, you can apply. What can I learn andhow long will it take?Apprenticeships take
between one and fouryears to complete, depending on the type. And they aren’t just
available in engineeringand plumbing— thereare vacancies in 1,500 jobroles from financialadvice to veterinarynursing to accountancy. How will an appren-ticeship benefit me?Firstly, you’ll be achiev-
ing a respected work-based qualification.You’ll also earnmoney
while you’re learningandworking.Most apprenticeships
give you awage of atleast £170 a week. Also, employers really
value apprenticeships.
They know that ifyou’ve got one, you’llhave the skills they want.In 2013, ICMResearch
conducted a survey. It found that employers
think qualified appren-tices are 15 per cent moreready for work thanthose with other qualifi-cations.Once you’ve completed
your apprenticeship, youcan also collect UCASpoints or go on to highereducation at college oruniversity.
Do I have to pay foran apprenticeship?Apprenticeships are
fully funded by theNational ApprenticeshipService (NAS) if you areaged 16-18.If you are aged 19-23
they are funded half bythe NAS and half by theemployer. If you are 24 or over,
you have to contribute.
