Forecast of Extent and Production of Big Onion Yala 2017 

Introduction 

An  early  forecast  on  the  probable  domestic  production  of  Big  Onion  has  been prepared based on a reconnaissance survey that was carried out by the Department of  Census  and  statistics  (DCS)  during  the months  of  August/September  2017,  in major  Big Onion  producing  districts  namely:  Anuradhapura,  Polonnaruwa, Matale and Mahaweli “H” area. 

 

Data Collection 

A  sample  of  GN  divisions  from  DS  divisions  of  the  above  administrative  districts, where  crop  was  grown  during  the  current  season,  was  selected  to  conduct  this survey. A sample of Big Onion farmers was drawn from the selected GN Divisions for the enumeration.  In the case of Mahaweli “H” area, a sample of farmers from each Unit Manager’s division was enumerated. 

In this exercise, the information such as expected yield levels on the basis of current crop  out‐look,  expected month  of  harvest  and  some  other  additional  information were  collected  from  the  sample  of  farmers  by  the  Statistical Officers  attached  to respective  DS  divisions.  Altogether  366  out  of  6,156  Big  Onion  farmers  were interviewed in this survey. 

 

Production and Market Surplus 

The estimated total production for 2017 Yala season is around 39,000 Metric Tons. A certain percentage of total harvest would not be reached to the market as farmers are keeping for their own consumption purposes. If it assumes that the total amount utilized  for  farmer’s home consumption and as vegetable  is about 5 percent of  the total output, the estimated marketable production would be around 37,000 Metric Tons during the current Yala season.
