NCCN Guidelines
NCCN guidelines added verbiage to the Adolescent
and Young Adult Guidelines: “Provide education
about potential diet/nutritional changes
associated with cancer treatment and possible
interventions. Refer to registered dietitian-
certified specialist in oncology (RD-CSO).”
Quality Assurance Performance Improvement
Project
Phase 1, to assess the feasibility of implementing a
validated MST within the EMR to describe the
current status of nutritional care for oncology outpatients and define work standards, workflow,
and frequency of MST utilization is ongoing. Collaborators include Health Partners in Minnesota,
The Ohio State University, and Dartmouth-Hitchcock, New Hampshire. At all three centers, the
validated MST has been fully integrated into the EMR Epic flow sheet, thus providing ongoing
discreet variable data reports. Data collection, analyses, and dissemination of results are
ongoing. Preliminary results were published and awarded a Food & Nutrition Conference &
Expo™ (FNCE®) Top-Scoring Abstract Award by the Academy’s Committee for Lifelong Learning
and Dietetics Practice Based Research Network Oversight Committee in Chicago, October 2017
(Stephens N, Shapiro A, Trujillo E, Taylor C, Johnson S, Spees CK. Malnutrition Screening: An
Underutilized Screening Tool for Outpatient Oncology Patients. J Acad Nutr Diet 2017; 117(9):
Suppl 1) (abstract/poster presented by Natalie Stephens and Colleen Spees). A second
abstract/poster, “Implementing and Evaluating the Malnutrition Screening Tool in Electronic
Health Records for Outpatient Cancer Centers” was presented at the 2018 National
Comprehensive Cancer Network Annual Conference, March 2018 in Orlando, Florida by Colleen
Spees and Natalie Stephens. A third abstract/poster of the same title was presented at the
Oncology Nutrition Symposium, Minneapolis, MN in April, 2018 and presented by Natalie
Stephens, Sarah Johnson, Jeannine Mills,
Elaine Trujillo, Alice Shapiro and Colleen
Spees.

Institute in Rockville, Maryland. The goal of the Strategy Session was to determine best
strategies for ensuring nutritional services to all ambulatory cancer clients and ultimately
improving the health of individuals with cancer through nutritional interventions. Twenty
experts from and across diverse disciplines including oncology clinicians, scientists, health
economists, policy leaders, and evidence-analysts participated. This meeting formed the basis
for a Strategic Plan and Core Concepts and outlined action steps in moving the NACHO initiative
of Access to Nutrition Care in Outpatient Cancer Centers forward.
RDN Staffing Survey
In 2017, an online survey was developed and disseminated nationally to oncology RDNs at
various cancer centers. IRB completed at The Ohio State University. Survey dissemination will be
completed Spring 2018.

Mentorship Program Mentorship Coordinator: Dianne Piepenburg, MS, RDN, CSO
Since its inception in August, 2017, the ON DPG Mentorship Program has been able to connect
12 Mentees with 12 Mentors. At present, we have 9 active partnerships and 3 partnerships
which are pending signing of the Mentorship Partnership Agreement.
Thus far, feedback from those who have participated has been very positive. Comments
included:
“I would not have been able to connect with someone in the ON DPG without the
Mentorship Program”
“Overall, the ON DPG provides the support I need for my career with a variety of offered
services which are helpful – the mentorship, but especially utilizing the e-mail listserv, which
I find very helpful.”
“I would definitely recommend this program to others.”
“I have suggested such a program to another DPG I am a member of.”
Future
From the initial Survey responses, we will be looking to modify the Mentorship Program in
efforts to meet the variety of needs that have been identified – from general guidance to
meeting specific goals/objectives.
The Mentorship Program Coordinator will also be reaching-out more frequently to those
involved during their program in efforts to optimize communication and discontinue
partnerships if they are not working-out for either party.

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Health Informatics Infrastructure
Research Project Project Chair: Tricia Cox, MS, RD, CSO, LD, CNSC
History
For the past two years, ON DPG has collaborated with
the Academy to design a feasibility study with the goal
of determining the effect of medical nutrition therapy by a RDN in outpatient cancer centers.
The Academy and the DPG recognize the need for proper nutrition care in all cancer centers for
all patients.
Details
The study will include six outpatient cancer centers associated with academic or community
hospitals, or free-standing cancer centers. The outpatient facilities must have an electronic
health record and a screening tool in place for all patients. Each site will be asked to document
and follow seven patients receiving anti-neoplastic treatment for lung, esophageal, colon, rectal,
or pancreatic cancer. We currently have a central institutional review board (IRB) approval
through the University of New Mexico, but each individual facility will need to determine if they
must use their local IRB as well. We are now in the process of contacting cancer centers and
determining which sites would be potential sites for our study.
