As we look back on the past year and all Scholar Athletes has accomplished, I’m reminded how far we have come since we openedourfirstZoneinBostonin2009.Ourprogramnowreachesmorethan5,000youngpeopleacrossMassachusettsand continues to create pathways to success in college and beyond that otherwise wouldn’t exist. Of course, none of this would be possible without the commitment of so many partners, donors, and supporters. To each of you, I offer my most sincere appreciation.

Having that one person who believes in you and cheers you along the way can be life changing for a young person. At its core, that’s what Scholar Athletes is all about.

In the past year, I’ve heard countless stories from the young participants in our program who said it was their time visiting Zones at their schools that got them back on track academically, pushed them to visit a college campus for the first time, apply for a college scholarship, or just step outside their comfort zone and meet new friends. I’ve also heard many young women are increasingly visiting Zones with an interest in participating in an athletic or wellness program. These stories demonstrate our program is having a meaningful and worthy impact on the whole development of the young people we serve.

This past year also brought some exciting new additions to our Board of Directors which is an important indication we have

established an organization that is attracting strong, influential leaders who are willing to invest their time and resources to help us reach our ambitious goals. I was proud to welcome formerMassachusettsStateSenatorLindaDorcenaForrytotheBoard, of which she now serves as Vice Chairperson. We are equallyproudtohavewelcomedtotheSAboardBostonPoliceCommissionerWilliamGross;HomeforLittleWandersformerPresidentandCEOJoanWallace-Benjamin;andWindwalkerGroupCEOHerbyDuverné.Eachofthesenewboardmembersbring bold perspectives to Scholar Athletes that will benefit each of the young people on our roster.

I am convinced, now more than ever before, that Scholar Athletes is changing young lives for the better and creating a clearer pathway toward their future success. As we continue to build upon our work of the last ten years, I hope you’ll join us on our journey toward a brighter future for our leaders of tomorrow.

EverydayIhavethegreatfortuneofbeingabletocelebratethe successes of the young people we serve, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to share a bit of that with you through this annual report. This past year was an exciting one for our organization and our Zone members.

On top of continuing to serve more young people and refine our program model, this year we have focused on opening new doors from young women through our innovative “We Are Fit”program.Wehavealsolookedfornewwaystoconveneinfluencers and change makers.

Thispastyearwewereproudtokickoffour“PowerofPlay”forum series aimed at inspiring people to step up and step forward to help close the opportunity gaps that exist for young people in the communities we serve. The problem is real and it is persistent, but it is also solvable. The response to this first forum was strong and positive. You can expect us to convene moreconversationslikethisaswemoveforwardin2019.Our goal is to have everyone walk away from these events empowered to take action and make a difference.

I’m also eagerly looking forward to celebrating a milestone for this organization, ten years of work on behalf of deserving and talentedyoungpeopleacrossMassachusetts.Thisisnosmallfeat and we are forever grateful to all of you for believing in our mission and helping us make it reality. With your support comes an obligation to deliver, and we take that very seriously.

2018 POWER OF PLAY FORUM In May, Scholar Athletes brought together Olympic and former professional athletes, along with business leaders, for a conversation on the role sports played in their lives and the importance of creating athletic opportunities for youth. The Power of Play Forum focused on how the larger community can collectively leverage resources and experiences to build equity and level the playing field for all young people in Massachusetts.
