2017 ANNUAL REPORT | 1

At Tidewell Hospice, we are building something great.

The past fiscal year featured major construction at the new Lakewood Ranch Hospice House. We are

excited to begin serving patients at the hospice house, our eighth and the first new inpatient facility

to open since 2007. The new house will cement Tidewell’s relationship with Lakewood Ranch, an area

primed for rapid growth.

The beautiful building is merely the most tangible representation of the growth experienced in the

past year by Tidewell and its holding company, Stratum Health System. Stratum and Tidewell are

proactively embracing the future, adapting to the ever-changing health care landscape of reduced

reimbursements, shifting referral patterns and increased regulations.

Stratum combines the exceptional care of Tidewell’s hospice services with a variety of other

health care-related services. Connexis Medical Services, Stratum’s physician services company,

provides home-based primary medical care. Recently, Stratum purchased Avidity Home Health, a

Medicare-certified home health agency based in Fort Myers and also serving Naples and Clewiston.

On its own, Tidewell Hospice remains an exceptionally strong organization. Tidewell served a record

8,986 patients and their families in the past fiscal year. Of course, the one constant that runs through

everything Tidewell does is the commitment of the colleagues and volunteers who provide excellent

care that combines clinical skill and compassionate touch. That hasn’t changed in the 38 years of

Tidewell’s existence.

Thank you for your continued support of Tidewell Hospice and our mission to help people with

chronic illness live well by providing care, comfort and compassion regardless of a patient’s ability to

pay. Tidewell annually provides more than $3 million in unreimbursed services to patients, their loved

ones and people in the community in the form of charity care, care for children, grief support and

more.

Tidewell is getting stronger in an ongoing effort to ensure your gifts continue to make a difference

throughout the communities we serve.

Gerry Radford, President and CEO

Tidewell EndowmentA robust endowment should be an essential component of any non-profit organization’s financial plan. Just as individuals save for the future and prepare for unforeseen economic conditions, Tidewell Hospice is building its nest egg in order to ensure its ability to provide high-quality end-of-life services for generations. With a strong endowment, Tidewell is able to offset the increasing costs of providing care amid decreasing reimbursements. Endowment gifts also help sustain ancillary services such as grief support, veterans’ programs, complementary and children’s services, which receive no direct funding from Medicare or Medicaid. Tidewell’s Legacy Fund is a designated pool of assets held and invested to provide long-term growth and dividends. The principal of the endowment is invested, and a portion of the interest earned can be made available for discretionary use by Tidewell’s Board of Trustees. Donors can designate funds for a specific purpose or request that support be directed where need is the greatest. Creating a named fund with a minimum investment of $50,000 through a donation of cash, securities or a bequest in a will is one way to recognize your legacy or a loved one while providing financial support to Tidewell. To learn more about the Tidewell endowment program, contact Denise Pope at (941) 552-7658 or [email protected].

About 750 community leaders and hospice supporters attended the eighth annual Tidewell Signature Luncheon on Feb. 10, 2017, at The Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota. Ann Curry, an Emmy Award-winning journalist who was an NBC News national and international correspondent for 25 years, delivered an emotional address that centered on the life and final days of her father. “As a child,” Ann said, “whenever I asked him what I should be when I grow up, his answer was always the same. He’d say, ‘Ann, whatever you do, do something in your life that is of some service to other people.’”
