The Togo Native Plant Nursery ProjectStuewe and Sons products are being used in a collaboration between the Institute for Community Partnerships and Sustainable Development (ICPSD) and University of Idaho’s Center for Forest Nursery and Seedling Research (CFNSR).

Dedicated to restoring areas in critical need of reforestation, ICPSD and CFNSR are collaborating to continue the development of a native plant nursery in Togo, Africa, where a local women’s cooperative is being trained to staff the nursery. By exchanging knowledge, skills and resources between ICPSD, CFNSR, and local partnerships, the Togo Native Plant Nursery Project has the potential to create positive and sustainable growth for the community and the environment.

Tray Covers fit over trays filled with cells prior to filling with soil. They prevent soil from falling into the spaces between individual cells. The stainless steel is very durable and rust resistant. It functions like our plastic version but with much greater longevity. The Boltron reusable plastic cover is an economical alternative to the stainless steel cover while providing the same great features. Plastic is the most economical option for a tray cover.

Flow Trays

Flow Trays provide sub-irrigation for plant material which are difficult to water overhead. Large Flow Trays are designed to contain four RL98, RL200, D50 trays or six D20 trays. Small and Medium Flow Trays hold one tray. Flow Trays are made of sunlight resistant plastic and are very durable. Trays and cells are sold separately.

D50 Deepots

The Deepot™ D20 and D50 trays each denote the number of cells per tray. Deepots are used for a wide range of native plants, hardwoods and other tree seedlings. All are an excellent choice for plant material requiring a deeper root ball. They also allow seedlings to be spread out or consolidated for sorting and maximizing growing density.

Mini-Treepots

Mini-Treepots™ are used for a variety of fruit and nut trees, and woody ornamentals. All have the same great features as Treepots™ (see page 8). The tapered-bottom pots guide roots downward to air prune out the bottom drain hole. The taper helps prevent roots from circling, producing a better root ball.

Anderson Pots

Anderson Bands are the quality standard for both bedding plant and tree growing uses. The open cross-bottom air prunes roots growing out the bottom of the container while the built-in stacking ribs are designed to inhibit root swirling and the square band corners promote root growth. Anderson Bands have been used successfully for many years by greenhouse and nursery propagators.

Flats and Trays are made of high-density plastic and resist ultraviolet light. A1020 and AFLAT2 have a 1" diamond bottom mesh. AFLAT3, AFLAT4 and AFLAT5 have a 3/16" square bottom mesh. TRAY5 has a 1 1/8" square bottom mesh. TRAY6 and TRAY7 have a 5/8” square bottom mesh.

Styroblock Containers are the industry standard with smooth, tightly fused cavities, diverse configurations, and the lowest cost per seedling. Styroblock containers are the most popular tray in silviculture nurseries.

Copperblock Containers are manufactured with a patented differential coating technology that achieves the lateral root growth expected from a copper enhanced root system, while allowing the right proportion of vertical root growth desired for a cohesive plug.

Jiffy Forestry Pellets

Jiffy® Forestry Pellets are the “Original” Air Pruning System: a soft-walled, meshed seedling container that allows for natural lateral root development with minimal to no root deformation. Since the initiation of the Jiffy container, forestry pellets have been used around the world for all types of regeneration, with over 100 million pellets used annually. The container aids the nursery in producing a natural lateral root system so there is immediate lateral root egression after planting to anchor the seedling immediately and maximize field performance potential. Jiffy Forestry Pellets are pH-balanced for hardwoods and tree seedlings, and are not recommended for vegetables.

The Jiffy Forestry Pellets utilize a sterile peat media which aids in the control of weeds and root diseases in the greenhouse. The media in the pellet is 100 percent top-quality peat which Jiffy grades, screens, tests and analyzes on a consistent basis during manufacturing.

Jiffy Forestry Pellets come in sheets which fit standard nursery 10/20 flats. It is imperative when ordering or using 10/20 flats that the bottom inside dimension is 9.84" x 20.1", otherwise the sheet of pellets may not fit within the tray.

Jiffy transplant pellets feature an extra large pre-made hole and are used for seeding large seeds or placement of transplants. There are two different indent diameters and depths available: 0.6" and 0.8" diameters; and 1" and 1.6" depths (after pellet expansion).

Zipset Plant Bands / Tree and Vine Wraps

Zipset™ Tree and Vine Wraps help newly planted vines or seedlings adapt to the vineyard or orchard environment upon transplanting. They help protect the plant from excessive sunrays and wind, deflect heat, deter rodents and guard against herbicide spray, assuring a more uniform crop.

The Zipset wraps are made from poly-coated bleach board—a material that is ideal for extreme environmental conditions and lasts between 18 and 24 months. They are available in two styles: a heat-sealed drop-on or a staple-on wrap, which may be required for plants with larger canopy development. Each style comes in several sizes but the most common protectors are 3.75" square and 20" or 24" tall for vines and 2.75" square and 18" tall for nut and fruit tree growers.
