Pastor's Life

Page 4: 2017 Directory of Churches

Witherspoon Press offers a series of "Lenten Reflections on the Confession of Belhar" for

use throughout the PC(USA) this year. The following reflection (Reprinted with

permission.) by Shannon Johnson Kershner, the pastor of Chicago's Fourth Presbyterian

Church, reflects on Belhar's statement, "We believe that this unity of the people of God

must be manifested and be active in a variety of ways: that we share one faith, have

one calling, are of one soul and one mind."

I keep hoping to persuade folks that difference does not have to equal divisionand unity does not have to equal uniformity. I have frequently appealed to our"unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." I have preached that we have beenmade the one body of Christ, and God did not ask our opinion before God didit. Therefore, it really does not matter if we like one another or not (though weusually do!).

I always emphasize that we belong to each other because in Christ Jesus, webelong to God! For "there is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called tothe one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God andFather of all, who is above all and through all and in all" (Ephesians 4:4-6).Belhar's central conviction that God has made us one - regardless of, actuallyin celebration of, our difference - is always central for me.

But in lent 2017, I am even more drawn to the how and not just the what. I amtaken not simply with the unity God in Christ has bestowed upon us, but withhow God calls us to live out that unity - that oneness in Christ - in our own livesand in our complex world. In Scripture, God calls us to live out our unity notwith a power of forcefulness or a sense of mere obligation (you will love eachother whether you want to or not), but with humility and gentleness, patience, and love-filled forbearance.

God hopes we don't approach the gift of our unity out of begrudging obligation, but that by God's grace, we will embody our unity from a spiritual posture ofjoy and awe, amazed at how wonderfully God has made us one. In ournational conversations on race and privilege, economic disparity, immigration, and other issues, how would our conversations and behavior change if we tookthe how we are to go about living this unity as seriously as we take the unityitself? What could be different?

Vibrant congregations share a secret: They know that a robust stewardshipprogram requires a year-round commitment, not just a special Sunday eachyear with a sermon about giving and a pledge card. Making that transition canbe challenging, but also rewarding. The Presbyterian Foundation is your partnerfor congregational stewardship, and our online Stewardship Resource Center isyour starting point for training, discussion, tools and resources, and ongoingsupport as you work to build a culture of generous giving in yourcongregation.

Hope for the Children Luncheon in Tampa

Rachel is a single mother of five children who recently participated inThornwell's Building Families program in Florida. In addition to caring for herchildren, Rachel relocated and gave up her job to care for her aging father.

The Building Families program helped Rachel manage the chaos she feltbecause of the move and caring for her children and aging parent. Rachelattended Building Families program classes at the host church for 12 weeksand learned how to create a system to motivate positive behaviors in herchildren. Plus, the church heard about Rachel's troubles and donated clothes, gifts, and food for her family. Just in time for Christmas.

The Building Families program is currently located in four host churches inFlorida. Thornwell wants to serve more families in need and is looking toexpand the program in the Tampa Bay area. Thornwell has recently hired asecond family specialist to accommodate more families who have expressed

Page 14: 2017 Directory of Churches

interest in receiving services, and we are exploring a second host church sitein the Tampa Bay area.

Thornwell's child abuse and neglect prevention program - The Building FamiliesProgram - has been successful in its work with at risk families in the Tampa Bayarea and is expanding its presence and mission there. Learn how Rachel'sfamily and many others have been transformed by this innovative mission.
