Robert Kroning began working as the Director of theDepartment of Design and Construction (DDC) at theCity and County of Honolulu (CCH) in September 2014.DDC is responsible for managing a majority of CCH’sCapital Improvements Program as well as all neces-sary land acquisitions.
Prior to starting at the City, Robert served 24 yearsas an Engineer Officer in the United States Army.Assignments included: Platoon Leader in Germany;Company Commander for a Construction Company in Panamá and for aPower Generation and Distribution Company in Ft. Bragg, NC; DeputyCommander for the Corps of Engineers Honolulu District; and DeputyDirector for the Engineering Programs Office in Afghanistan. He alsoserved in various staff assignments in Salt Lake City, Atlanta, Iraq, andwith NATO in Italy and Spain.
Robert was born and raised in New Jersey and has lived in Hawaiisince 2005. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineeringfrom the United States Military Academy in 1990 and earned a Masters inEngineering Management from Southern Methodist University in 2002.Robert is a licensed professional engineer in the State of Hawaii.

Joining HCES will be VEX IQ teams in a fast-paced skills challenge asthey vie for a spot in the Worlds championship tournament.
HCES is welcoming participants who would like to showcase science,engineering, math, and technology (STEM) with an interactive booth, dis-play board, or donation. Last year’s event attracted hundreds of shop-pers.

CMAA Hawaii Chapter News:Happy New Year! We hope that you and your
Ohana had a safe and relaxing Holiday sea-son, and that 2017 brings you only goodthings. December of 2016 ended our year in aflurry at CMAA Hawaii! On December 3rdCMAA/AACE sponsored a joint community ser-vice beach cleanup event at Kahana BayBeach Park. The event was a huge successwith a very good turnout including volunteersfrom CMAA, AACE and friends. It was a goodopportunity to meet with old friends andbecome acquainted with new ones. Items col-lected included plastic, cans, bottles, plasticcrate, starter motor, broken rocking chair andmany misc. items. The event was followed witha BBQ and casual socializing. A good time washad by all. Cleanup areas included beach andpark areas, shoreline, and parking lot. Over twohundred pounds of trash was collected for dis-posal. Mahalo to all that participated andhelped to plan and facilitate the event. We arelooking forward to co- hosting more events withother Engineering organizations in the future.
On Dec 13th our chapter hosted a luncheonat Dave and Buster’s in Honolulu featuringguest speaker Chris Takashige, (Director ofDesign and Construction at HART and currentCMAA National CCM of the Year). Chris dis-cussed his career in Construction Managementand the experiences that led to his understand-ing of the importance and value of utilizingCertified Construction Managers on construc-tion projects from an owner’s perspective.
We expect 2017 to be another great year ofbuilding CMAA Hawaii, and we would love foryou to be a part of the excitement. Our chapteris here as a resource for all ConstructionEngineering and Management professionals,and the things that we do benefit not only ourCM communitybut our largerOhana as well.

Growing up as a sports loving child in Hawaiiin the 70’s and 80’s, you can’t help but bedrawn to the University of Hawaii’s RainbowBaseball team. Names like Ross Kagawa,Todd Takayoshi, Marcus Owens and more arelike legends to guys my age. Now with mysons at that age, we still go to the RainbowStadium every now and then to enjoy a day atthe park. So I was really looking forward to ourmost recent ACECH General Membershipmeeting where our featured speaker was noneother than Head Coach Mike Trapasso of theHawaii Rainbow baseball team. Needless tosay, I was not disappointed.
Although you might think that being the headcoach of a baseball team and running an engi-neering company do not have much in com-mon, Coach’s talk proved that we face much ofthe same challenges. We both are in the busi-ness of managing a team and Coach based histalk on the book, “How Winning Works: 8Essential Leadership Lessons from theToughest Teams on Earth”. He went on todescribe the eight essential elements of team-work and how he applies them to his team.They are:T – Total CommitmentE – Empathy and AwarenessA – Adversity ManagementM – Mutual RespectW – “We” ThinkingO – Ownership of the ProjectR – Relinquishment of EgoK – Kinetic Leadership
What I found especially interesting was howCoach Trapasso had to change his thinking toaddress the millennial generation.
In the past, if Coach said, “run through thatwall”, the kid would put on his helmet and dohis best to run through the wall. Now, not onlydoes he have to say “run through that wall”, buthe also has to explain “why we should runthrough that wall”, “what happens when we hitthe wall”, and “what’s on the other side of thewall”.
Sound familiar? Do you see the similaritiesbetween a baseball coach and an engineeringmanager? Just like Coach, we need to havekinetic leadership, able to adjust our gameplans, so we can keep our teams winning in thefuture. Corey Matsuoka, P.E., PMP, LEED APACECH President (FY 2016-2017)

2017 BALLOTS & SURVEYTowards the end of January, members will be
receiving our Hawaii Section notice to visitSurveyMonkey.com for our annual ballots andsurvey. In the July 2016 Wiliki article, thechanges to Section Operations affecting theHawaii Section were outlined as follows. Allsections-created bylaws have been discontin-ued with all sections following one ASMEBylaws. Instead of “section,” “group” is beingused more with former section officers knownas group leadership team with voting roles. Thetitles of the group leaders remain the same,except we cannot have leaders called direc-tors. There can be only two “Members” former-ly known as directors. Previously, our nowdefunct bylaws called for up to four directors.In addition, the titles “Officer,” “Director,”“President,” or “Vice-President” are not to beused for any Group volunteer positions.
Group participants are placed into “Voting”and “Non-voting” roles. The Group LeadershipTeam (GLT) has the Voting roles. Committeechairs and committee members fall in the Non-voting supporting roles.
Starting with our 2017 ballots, we will electthe same titles Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, andSecretary, but instead of Directors, we willinclude two positions called “Members”, andalso a “Group Page Administrator.” It isstressed that the Chair and the Treasurer mustbe two different individuals. Each Group lead-ership position on the GLT shall be nominatedfor a 1-year term, with a maximum of 3 consec-utive years of service in a particular position(e.g., Chair, or Treasurer) for any given volun-teer.

CMAA and AACE held a joint community ser-vice event at Kahana Bay. This beach clean-up was enjoyed by our colleagues, family andfriends. Generally, Kahana Bay is well kept butour group managed to collect over 200 poundsthroughout the beach, park area, shorelinesand parking lot. We collected plastic, cans,bottles, large crate, rope and much more.

ASCE HAWAII SECTIONJANUARY DINNER MEETING
The January Dinner Meeting is scheduled tobe held on Thursday Jan. 12th. Description: Makai Ocean Engineering, Inc.owns and operates what is currently the world’slargest operational Ocean Thermal EnergyConversion (OTEC) power plant at the NaturalEnergy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority(NELHA), near the Kona Airport. In the summerof 2015, the power plant was connected to theBig Island electrical grid, with a maximumcapacity of 105 kilowatts. The purpose of theproject is to determine the reduction in the lev-elized cost of energy (LCOE) for OTEC throughimprovements in its component technologies,with a strong focus on the marine heatexchangers. TECH ChallengeOn Saturday, November 19th, six YMF mem-
bers volunteered at the FIRST Tech Challenge– Matchplay #4 at Case Middle School. TheFIRST Tech Challenge is designed for studentsin grades 7-12. Each team is responsible fordesigning, building, and programming theirrobot in a 10-week build period to compete inan alliance format against other teams. Thetheme this year was Velocity Vortex. YMF mem-bers tracked the number of points scored inthe vortexes, reset the playing fields, andqueued the teams for the next match. Thankyou to the YMF volunteers for coming out tohelp and to Tracy Tonaki and Jenny Uramotofor coordinating this event with the YMF.

Koko Head HikeOn Sunday, November 27th, six members of
the YMF participated in an evening hike up the1048 steps of the Koko Head Railway trail. Theweather was exceptional and hikers experi-enced a beautiful sunset while walking backdown the trail. Afterwards the group went toSophie’s Gourmet Hawaiian Pizzeria to enjoycustom made pizza and each other’s companyto relax after the hard hike. This event was agreat way end to the Thanksgiving weekend.
Honolulu MarathonOn Sunday, December 11th, YMF members
teamed up with the Hawaii Kai Jaycees to vol-unteer at the starting line and staging area ofthe 44th annual Honolulu Marathon. YMF mem-bers were tasked with holding ropes and signsto section off the running time zones, whichwas based on when the race participants wereexpected to finish. Also, they assisted in tyingtrash bags along the starting line and imple-menting crowd control. Thank you to the YMFvolunteers for coming out to help and to LisaNakasone and Kathryn Hu from the Hawaii KaiJaycees for coordinating this event with theYMF.
