2017 HARVEY RELIEF UPDATE

The Chinese Community Center has played a leading role in helping those

impacted by Hurricane Harvey engaging in a wide array of activities

throughout the community through our Harvey Relief Assistance Center The

update below shares our journey over the last five weeks

Harvey Relief Assistance Center Since opening on September 5 2017 the Chinese Community Centerrsquos HarveyRelief Assistance Center has served more than 211 families spanning 54 ZIP codesThrough individual case management and evaluation CCC has been able to providehelp to each family in the following ways

Distribution of basic resources such as clothes baby essentials food andwaterAssistance with enrolling in public benefits based on need includingFEMA SBA disaster loans SNAP WIC Medicaid and health insurance through theMarketplaceTransportation assistance through UberLyft or tow truckservices for people who have stalled vehicles or no transportationChildcare assistance to families enrolled in CCCrsquos early childhood educationprogramEmergency assistance through VISA gift cards so that people from low- tomoderate-income households can meet their urgent needsRental assistance for people who have become unemployed or displaced as aresult of HarveyCase management services in Chinese English Korean Spanishand Vietnamese to support diverse Houstonians with varying levels of Englishproficiency

Temporary American Red Cross Shelter

The Chinese Community Center was activated as a temporary American RedCross shelter from September 17 through September 22 More than 200evacuees from George R Brown Convention Center were sheltered at CCCduring that time before moving to a more permanent shelter CCC has servedas an American Red Cross Shelter to the community for the past several years

causing many people in states like NewYork and New Jersey to lose theirhome In the weeks following CCCstaff members held an internalcampaign to gather donations of fundsclothes and other essentials forHurricane Sandy victims CCC staffmember Marta and her husband Davebrought two big suitcases to New Yorkduring Thanksgiving and the donationswere distributed to those in needincluding an elderly woman who losther home and needed medicalattention Five years later the ChineseCommunity Center received a similarshow of love and support fromHurricane Sandy victims In the daysfollowing Hurricane Harveyrsquos arrivalour Center received two suitcases filledwith new baby essentials menrsquos andwomenrsquos clothing shoes and blanketsin addition to more than $800 in giftcards for victims in need Thesedonations were distributed immediatelyto victims including families in ourEarly Learning Center who experiencedflood damage We would like to thankSteve and Susan Taylor along withtheir friends in Rockaway Beach NewYork for their incredible generosity andfor delivering these two suitcases to usas soon as they were able
