2017 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS)
ICAS is a comprehensive educational assessment program, which assesses the higher order thinking and
problem solving skills needed for success in:
English
Mathematics
Science
Writing
Spelling
Digital Technologies
ICAS does not test recall of curriculum content, so students do not need to study for the assessments.
If you would like your child/ children to enter any of these assessments, please enter their details via this link,
ensuring that you only enter your child in the subject areas that you would like them to participate.
All students involved in Primary School Extension programs, are expected to participate in
assessments, relevant to their extension classes.
Entries for the 2017 ICAS Assessments will close on Wednesday March 29
We cannot accept registrations after 29 March
All entries can only be submitted via the ICAS Link.
All entry fees will be added to your Term Three account
2017 DATES, FEES, ASSESSMENT INFORMATION
Digital Technologies – Years 3 - 10 – to be held on Tuesday May 23 = $ 8-80
General IT skills using familiar contexts, including:
Common operating systems and hardware
Word Processing
Graphics and Multi-Media
Spreadsheets and databases
Internet and email
Programming and scripting
Science – Years 2 – 12 – to be held on Tuesday May 30 = $ 8-80
Scientific skills in the subject contexts of Earth and Beyond, Natural and Processed Materials, Life and Living,
and Energy and Change, including:
Measuring and observing
Interpreting data
Predicting / concluding from data
Investigating
Reasoning / Problem Solving
Writing –Years 3 - 12– to be held on Monday June 12 = $ 18-70
Constructing an aspect of a narrative text, demonstrating:
Text purpose and structure
Language choices that enhance the writing
Syntax and grammar
Punctuation
Spelling – Years 2 – 7 – to be held on Wednesday June 14 = $ 12-10
Spelling of words that range from words with simple spelling patterns to words with difficult or unusual spelling
patterns, in four contexts, including:
Dictation
Proofreading
Error correction
Applying rules and conventions
English – Years 2-12 –to be held on Tuesday August 1 = $ 8-80
Reading and language skills are assessed in a range of texts. Students are required to locate, identify, interpret,
infer and synthesise information in and about texts, focusing on the aspects of:
Reading for meaning in literary texts
Reading for meaning in factual texts
Textual devices
Syntax
Vocabulary
Mathematics – Years 2-12 – to be held on Tuesday August 15 = $ 8-80
Mathematics skills in a range of contexts from the following areas:
Number and arithmetic
Algebra and patterns
Measures and units
Space and geometry
Chance and data
