The Tigers have lost five straight games, dating back to last season. 3. HC Tony Hughes, despite the loss to TCU, saw good signs in his team. The JSU defensive line had moments when it was able to penetrate the TCU offensive line. The JSU offensive line also had some bright spots during the game against TCU. 4. JSU opened the game with an impressive offensive drive, eventually getting to the TCU 4-yard line. The drive was highlighted by a 37-yard Brent Lyles pass completion to Jevon Floyd. 5. RB Jordan Johnson looks to get more carries against TSU. In the season opener Johnson had only 13 carries and finished the game with 41 yards (3.2 yards per carry). He didn’t lose any yards against TCU. 6. Keontre Anderson – SWAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year – looks to have a bounce back game as well. He finished the season opener with four tackles and no tackles for loss. Last season he led the FCS with 25.5 TFL. 7. The Tigers have one of the toughest schedules in the SWAC. The Tigers will face three very diffi- cult road opponents over the first three weeks of the season. JSU opened the season at TCU, next the Tigers face #23 Tennessee State (Sept. 9) and then travel to #21 Grambling State (Sept. 16). JACKSON STATE AMONG APR NATIONAL LEADERS For the sixth straight year the Jack-son State University Division of Ath-letics received favorable NCAA APR scores and no JSU teams were placed in the NCAA penalty struc-ture. Penalties arise when a team scores fall below 930. All of JSU’s 18 sponsored sports are eligible for post season play heading into the 2017-18 academic year.

Jackson State is one of the leaders in the area of APR among historical-ly black colleges and universities (HBCU’s) and limited resource schools. According to the latest APR reports the single-year Academic Progress Rate for limited-resource schools has increased from 939 to 968 since 2010, while HBCUs saw an increase from 913 to 956 during that time. Teams from schools not considered limited-resource institu-tions increased the single-year rate by only seven points (979 to 984) over that same time.

entry for JSU came in second place in the HERO Sports Hype Video contest.

QB Mix JSU has for capable QBs - each with a slightly different skill set this season. Brent Lyles is the most experienced

signal caller on roster. Jordan Williams is a dual threat QB. Jarrad Hayes has

prior experience in JSU’s offensive sys-tem. Tavis Williams is a true freshman

with a ton of upside.

Tigers Defense Determined To Not Get Caught In the Hype

Jackson State is expected to have one of the better, if not the best defense in the South-western Athletic Conference. Despite losing

standouts Javancy Jones and Cornelius Henderson JSU has one of the best

defenses on paper. HC Tony Hughes has worked hard to not let them believe the hype too much. “We have not done anything yet

with this team. I think we can be pretty good, but we won’t know until we go out and play

somebody.”

Keontre Anderson - Preseason SWAC Defensive Player of the Year

Senior DE Keontre Anderson leads a talent-ed and deep defensive line. Anderson was

selected as the SWAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Last season he led the FCS in tackles for loss (25.5). He is also a

Buck Buchanan Award Watch List (best de-fensive player in FCS), He is also a FCS

preseason All-American.

GAME SUMMARIES

Fort Worth, Texas – Kenny Hill completed 18-of-23 passes for 209 yards with four touchdown passes as the Horned Frogs (1-0) racked up 542 yards of total offense at Amon G. Carter Stadium. TCU led 35-0 by halftime and also received a pair of touchdown recep-tions from Desmond White. Jackson State was limited to 24 yards rushing and 41 passing yards. The Tigers reached the TCU 7-yard line on the game’s opening drive, but a fumbled snap led to a 28-yard loss and was followed up by a failed fake punt. The drive was highlighted by a pair of nifty catches. Brent Lyles connected with Jevon Floyd on a 37-yard completion to the TCU 16-yard line. Jordan Johnson then hauled in a juggling catch before being knocked out of bounds at the TCU 7. Johnson had 13 carries for 41 yards to lead the Tigers in rushing and Floyd caught two passes for 33 yards. Defensively, the Tigers were led by Deion Pope who finished with seven tackles. Shawn Bishop, Andre Lloyd and Tyler Rogers each posted six tackles.

at the University of Southern Mississippi in 1984 working with the defensive backs. Hughes played football and ran track at Forest High School in 1974-1976 and played defensive back at St. Paul’s College 1976-1977 and was a defensive back for Southern Miss from 1977-1978. He earned his Bachelor of Arts’ degree in

Sociology in 1980. He is an active member

of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA),

serving as a member of the Mississippi FCA

State Board of Directors in 1999, President

of the Mississippi FCA Coaches Council in

1998 and Vice-President of the Mississippi

FCA Coaches Council in 1997.

Hughes is known as one of the top recruiters in the nation. 247Sports.com tabbed him as one of America’s top 10 recruiters in 2015 after Mississippi State University hauled in one of the nation’s top 16 classes according to recruiting services and at Jackson State University, Hughes will focus primarily on recruitment. According to Rivals.com, the 22 National Letters of Intent MSU received on 2015 Na-tional Signing Day made up the Bulldogs’ best class since 2003. Fifteen of the signees hailed from the state of Mississippi.

In addition, Hughes has a knack for identify-

ing players in the State of Mississippi that

leave Mississippi to become NFL pro-

spects. This is true with First-team All-

America linebacker, Benardrick McKinney,

who was once a two-star high school quar-

terback in Tunica, Mississippi, before being

drafted by the Houston Texans in 2015.

Hughes was named as one of the top 25

college football recruiters in the nation by

Rivals.com in 2006. His first two years were

spent tutoring the defensive backs in Oxford

while spending quality time with tight ends.

Hughes served his country in the United

States Marine Corps from 1981-1984 and

received an honorable discharge. He began

his coaching career as a graduate assistant

Tony Hughes, a Mississippi native with a wealth of coaching experience in his home state, enters his second season at the helm of the Jackson State University football program. In his first season at JSU, Hughes finished

with a 3-8 overall record and a 3-6 conference

mark. He picked up his first collegiate win as a

head coach on Sept. 14, 2017 when the Ti-

gers beat Arkansas Pine Bluff 32-20. The

Tigers followed that win with a 16-14 victory

over in-state rival Mississippi Valley State.

JSU picked up its last win of the 2016 season

by beating Texas Southern 21-13 in Houston,

Texas for their homecoming game.

Hughes came to Jackson State University

from Mississippi State University, where he

spent seven years as a key member of the

Bulldogs football program. While at Mississip-

pi State University had oversight for the safe-

ties, the defensive backfield and coordinated

the Bulldogs’ recruitment efforts. In the

spring of 2013, Hughes was named assistant

head coach at Mississippi State University

(MSU).

Prior to MSU, Hughes made a stop for one

season at Southern Mississippi University

where he coached the secondary. Hughes

coached for three seasons at the University of

Mississippi.
