It’s a Saturday evening in summer. You’re sitting in a park with family and friends, and a fabulous picnic dinner. The picture is complete when the glorious live music begins. Especially when the music is some of the most-loved opera choruses and arias from four leading soloists, the Opera Australia Chorus and Orchestra Victoria. This marvellous combination could only be Mazda Opera in the Bowl.

December 3, 2016 at 8pm Sidney Myer Music Bowl Free! No need to book, just come along.

The launch of a new opera season is always exciting for everyone associated with Opera Australia. This year I believe our program is reflective of the zeitgeist even more so than usual.

I always try to program seasons with a particular resonance in mind. Often that may be symbolic or interpreted as a subtext, but this practice helps to provide balance and shape to a season.

Consequently, as far as our finances permit, I try to have a feel for where Opera Australia sits at this point in time within the cultural landscape of Australia and its people.

World events impact on who and what we are at any given time in history, but the present global situation reminds us that the certainty of anything we used as a reference point previously, is now nebulous.

This season then, has been designed to provoke thought and discussion as well as to marvel at the sublime music and power of the masterpieces which we will present to you in 2017.

The composer of King Roger, Karol Szymanowski, was fascinated by the melting pot of peoples and cultures in the Mediterranean, particularly in Sicily, where he spent much time. The Arabic musical influences in the score of King Roger reflect the many parallel and integrated cultures that existed in Sicily during the early part of the 20th century.

This is juxtaposed against the passionate jealousies of Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana. In this microcosm, one can see the musical and theatrical reflections of different cultures existing together within the fabric of one society.

Cavalleria Rusticana premièred in 1890 and Szymanowski wrote King Roger between 1918 and 1924.

Bizet’s Carmen reminds us vividly of the consequences of lives that can be changed irrevocably by one bad decision and how that moment in time can destroy our world.

Lyndon Terracini AMArtistic Director

WelcomeDuring these uncertain times, great art enables us to find a place of solace, where we gain an acute insight into the soul of humanity. This can hopefully assist us in making decisions of importance in a world of constantly moving foundations, informed by deep thought, integrity and profound understanding.

I hope you enjoy our year of enlightenment.

In the heat, dust and danger of the city, fiery Carmen sings her siren song. With each seductive note, the guileless Don José is drawn into her world: a world of smugglers in suits, a world outside society’s bounds.

What kind of person chooses a love that they know will destroy them? What kind of person sees that destiny, and dances towards it, without fear?

"I’ve always been intrigued by the psychology of that choice," says John Bell, who follows up his phenomenal Tosca with a new production of Carmen. "What leads you to love the one person who is going to destroy you?"

Underneath the irresistible Spanish tunes is a gritty tale of power, corruption and destruction waiting to be told, Bell says.

Carmen is colourful, physical and entertaining, but it shouldn’t get "too pretty", he adds. To succeed, it must have punch. Sex and sexual politics. Physicality and power.

This new take on Bizet’s famous opera hones in on the relationships at its heart, on the wild love that promises freedom while binding the lovers in an unbreakable web of fate.

The ultimate femme fatale is here to stamp her feet, toss her hair and dance. Will she love Don José? Maybe. Will you fall for her sultry Habañera? Definitely.

Put on your costume and powder your face. The people have paid, and want to laugh! Laugh, clown, at your shattered love, at the sorrow that poisons your heart!

Roll up for a double dose of desperation and drama in this classic double bill of tragedies with stories that cut all too close to home. In a small Italian town, lusting after someone who is not yours is a dangerous game. And falling in love? Even more treacherous. Two short operas explore the full spectrum of emotion: passionate love, consuming lust, bitter suffering and boundless rage.

This Olivier Award-winning co-production with the Royal Opera House, lays bare the raw heart of each opera — ordinary people, driven by emotion to the limits of what we know is human. The result is pure catharsis: everyday tragedy writ large on stage.

Diego Torre sings the famous ‘Vesti la giubba’ as he performs both challenging tenor roles in one evening, and the Opera Australia Chorus sings the famous Easter Hymn as Dragana Radakovic’s voice soars above.

Szymanowski

The shepherd’s voice is lyrical, exotic, heady with the promise of eternal ecstasy. His message is dangerously seductive, and one by one, the people abandon themselves to the worship of desire, pure in its profanity.

Watching his wife dance under the stranger’s spell, King Roger struggles with his own passions: choosing between the sacred love he knows and the sensuous, glittering realm of hedonism the shepherd preaches.

Szymanowski’s intoxicating, iridescent music is rarely heard on the opera stage, so don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear a 20th-century Polish masterpiece.

This co-production with the Royal Opera House was first performed in Covent Garden and was “rapturously acclaimed” by critics who described Kasper Holten’s arresting staging as a “major artistic triumph” (The Telegraph, UK).

Ground-breaking, glorious and grand...

Celebrating the beloved original, Lerner and Loewe’s My Fair Lady comes to the Regent Theatre, under the direction of Julie Andrews.

Marking the show’s 60th anniversary year, Opera Australia and John Frost join forces to honour the past and bring the beloved story of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins to a new generation of theatre audiences.

The Cinderella story about the Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and the appealingly arrogant phoneticist, Professor Higgins, is an endearing tale that charms audiences with its warmth and vivid characters.

The clash of cultures sparks some of the theatre’s most jubilant songs and witty dialogue. The triumphant score features unforgettable numbers including Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?, On The Street Where You Live, I Could Have Danced All Night and Get Me to the Church on Time.

In 1956, Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s masterful retelling of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion took the world by storm. Playing the irresistible Eliza Doolittle was a young Julie Andrews, in only her second role on Broadway, a role that would catapult her into international stardom.

In a world first, Julie Andrews will direct a glorious production of My Fair Lady, teaming up with the Tony Award-winning Christopher Gattelli and associates of the musical’s original designers, Cecil Beaton and Oliver Smith.

A stellar cast of Australian theatre royalty and emerging talent will be showcased in this truly momentous production.

This is a theatre event not to be missed.

Let’s waltz, let’s sway the night away.

It’s time for a little romance.

There’s a fortune at stake — which match will she make?

She’ll lead you a merry old dance.

Lehár

The Merry Widow is a delicious confection: a light-hearted look at love amid the champagne and glitter of Art Deco France. Ladies sweep into ballrooms in silk fishtail gowns, and dapper gents in suits and patent leather shoes kiss your hand and fill up your dance card.

Melbourne-born international star Danielle de Niese plays the beguiling widow, inadvertent heiress of a city’s fortune after just eight days of marriage. Fearing the loss of their riches, the society set are determined she must wed a local, and soon, before any foreigner catches her gaze. But she’s got a history with the man they’ve got in mind, and to complicate matters, the widow isn’t the only one turning heads. There’s plenty of love to go around in this story of amorous encounters and elegant romance.

Graeme Murphy brings his spirited choreography and direction to Lehár’s charming operetta in a brand new production.

The party animals of Seville are off to the fiesta, but weird little Diego is left behind — no oddballs allowed. However, in a classic showdown of brains versus brawn, El Kid proves that fortune favours the bold and even the smallest of things can blossom into something fabulous.

Designed to introduce young audiences to the wonder, passion and drama of opera, this 50-minute family opera explores the courage you find when you believe in yourself by reimagining the much-loved story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff and setting it to the glorious melodies of Bizet’s Carmen.
