Port Access Road Project November 2017 Update When completed, the Port Access Road will connect I-26 to the SC Ports Authority’s new Hugh K. Leatherman, Sr. Terminal in North Charleston with two inbound and two outbound lanes for all port- related traffic. The new fully directional interchange will also serve local and commercial vehicles with a Bainbridge Avenue connector road, an extension of Stromboli Avenue, associated improvements to local streets, and improved I-26/Meeting Street access ramps. Bainbridge Avenue Connector Away from the sight of the traveling public, clear-ing and grubbing is underway for the new Bainbridge Avenue connector road. Traveling over marshlands and Shipyard Creek, a segment of this new connector road will be built on a”flat slab” bridge to protect the environment and avoid flooding. Working around King and Meeting Streets Working around existing roadways is one of the biggest challenges when constructing new exit ramps. The fully directional Port Access Road interchange will have ramps to and from I-26 eastbound and westbound. These multi-story ramps will not only connect to I-26, but will also flyover King and Meeting Streets. To facilitate the construction of these new ramps, King Street Extension has been closed between Discher and Hackmann. On Monday, November 20 th , eastbound traffic on North Meeting Street, between Comstock and Kingsworth Avenues, will be moved to create two way traffic within the two westbound lanes. The movement of westbound North Meeting Street is necessary to place drainage and construct earthwork for the new I26 ramps to and from Meeting Street. Starting the last week of November, the intersection of Austin & Summerille Avenues will be closed for a few weeks to construct the Port Access Road ramp onto I-26 Eastbound. For more project information, please contact The SCDOT Port Access Road Project Office at 843-580-8801 [email protected] - www.SCPortAccessRoad.com A finished concrete pile cap will ultimately support the bridge deck for the new Bainbridge Connector. As of this publication, 45 columns have been constructed for the project’s ramps and mainline. In this picture, concrete is dropped from a bucket into a tremie to fill the column form around the steel reinforcing cage. At 9.5 feet in diameter, this drilled shaft casing is bigger than a jeep and a foot and a half smaller than the largest casing on this project.
