SHEEP SHEARING & WOOLHANDLINGSheep shearing is one of the most celebrated activities in Australian

agricultural history and an iconic part of our cultural image. The first

authenticated tally of sheep shorn in a single day was 30 sheep by a blade

shearer in 1835. By 1892, the record stood at 321 sheep. Patents for shearing

machines were granted from the 1860s and in 1882, Jack Gray became the

first man to completely shear a sheep using mechanical shears. The method

that most woolgrowers adopted was the Wolseley stand. Frederick Wolseley

invented a handpiece connected to a power source - originally driven by

horse power, but later connected to an external engine. The handpiece

allowed the wool to be clipped up to three times closer to the skin than blade

shearing. By 1900, machine shearing was the norm, although it was not until

1949 that Jack Howe’s blade shearing tally was broken by Dan Cooper when

he sheared 325 sheep by machine. In 1986, WA recorded its biggest wool clip

of 231,000,000kg.

MISSION STATEMENT

To promote the sport of sheep shearing before the public, and in turn encourage the growth and pursuit of excellence in the industry.

WOOLHANDLING1. Woolhandlers can 'make or break' a wool clip and in

today's financial climate farmers are looking to maximise returns for their product. It is vital, therefore to have competent woolhandlers skirting and preparing the wool for pressing.

2. Stains, sweepings, dags, black wool and skin pieces must be removed from the fleece, but care taken not to over skirt. Belly wool and wigs are handled separately.

3. Woolhandlers will be judged on the way they pick up and throw the fleece and the way it is positioned on the table.

4. Black wool is taken out at the time on the board, however no fleece can be skirted on the board and only one fleece is permitted on the table at any time.

5. Fleeces should be rolled to have a shoulder visible for judging. They will be timed on the last fleece from when the Shearer has pulled out of gear on the last sheep.

6. The broom or paddle must be put on the table to indicate the job is finished.

AWI YOUNG SHEEP PRODUCERS CHALLENGE

This event is seen as a great opportunity for students to receive advice from leading industry trainers while competing against other students from across the state. This event is to run in conjunction with the Agricultural College Shearing Challenge held at Katanning Sheep Sale and Expo.

The competition is in three sections:

1. Shearing

2. Woolhandling

Don Boyle, WACSA and Jim Murray, AWI will oversee the shearing and woolhandling with students judged and scored in accordance with West Australian Competition Shearing Association rules. Two students will shear one sheep each whilst the two students from the team sort the wool.

3. Ewe Selecting

Ewe selecting will be overseen by a highly regarded sheep classer. The two students competing in this area will have to assess 15 merino ewe hoggets and select a top group of 5, middle group of 5 and a bottom group of 5 hoggets. The sheep should be selected for evenness, quality and quantity of wool and conformation. The students will be scored on their ability to place sheep in the correct order, skill in handling the sheep e.g. opening of wool, checking teeth and their ability to explain to over-judge the reasons for their selections and be able to point out good points and faults on individual sheep.

Students will compete in a team of 6 with 2 students participating in each section.

Scoring:Scoring of the event will place a student for each individual section and then be combined for the overall winning team. Points for each section are added together to arrive at a winner of the challenge.
