The Program

Experience Tells Us Over the last few years, comments made by Scoutmasters in their evaluations have suggested the need for a

section of helpful hints based on previous experiences at camp. This is a collection of what experience has

taught us regarding merit badges and advancements:

1. Summer camp is not a merit badge mill, where you pay a fee and get three badges automatically.

Instead, camp offers merit badges as one portion of the overall program.

2. You should plan on a 3 – 5 Merit Badges per week per boy.

3. The most difficult badges to earn are those requiring a great deal of physical skill, coordination and

stamina, i.e. Lifesaving, Archery, Rifle Shooting, and Shotgun Shooting.

4. Complete advance written work at home; camp is not the ideal classroom for written work. The

prepared Scout comes to camp with all written work already done.

5. Boys should try doing something new at camp and get a well-rounded experience. Try a Sci Tek

badge, an ECon badge, an Aquatics badge, and Scoutcraft badge.

6. Scouts should keep in mind the physical layout of camp when scheduling classes. For example, at

Camp Babcock-Hovey it is not a good idea to schedule Lakefront and Shooting Sports merit badges

back-to-back because of the demanding walk between those program areas.

7. You should come to camp prepared. Have patrols already organized. Elect patrol leaders. Work on

ideas as patrols and have the patrol leaders represent the group at camp.

8. Your campsite is your home for the week, so work at making it comfortable by bringing banners and

flags to dress it up.

9. You should schedule time for rest! That's right. Too often, you don't take time to sit and enjoy the

beauty at camp around you. Don't keep such a pace that you miss the trees, the nature, and the

clean, fresh air.

10. Top troops show spirit. The troop that comes to camp with ideas and spirit and challenges make the

rest of camp come alive. Bring your troop cheer to camp and show everyone that you're number

one.

11. Be flexible. Each week nearly 200 boys attend camp and while staff is there to meet everyone's

needs, a Scout is friendly, cheerful, and courteous. We need to practice the Scout law in camp when

dealing with others.

12. Communicate: If you have a special need or want to do something spectacular, tell us about it and

we'll give it our best shot.

13. In the event a situation requires you or one of your Scouts to go to the hospital, experience tells us

that it would be wise to have a photocopy of each troop member's insurance card for more efficient

processing and faster service.

14. For your benefit, it would be advisable to have no less than 2 copies of each camper's and leader's

health forms while at camp. One for your unit's file and one for the Health Lodge file.

Assemblies The Sunday evening campfire is an introductory one, to meet the staff. All campers must attend. The second

full camp assembly is Saturday morning. We will have a ring of honor where we will recognize those who

walked Hiawatha’s path. Each Troop can collect any awards received during the week

Other informal non-programed campfires may happen around camp during the week.

Morning and Evening Colors Scouts are encouraged to participate in our flag ceremonies each day. Interested Scouts should talk to a staff

member prior to the ceremony in which they would like to help. Morning Colors will occur at 7:30 AM and

Evening Colors will occur at 5:15 PM.

Open Program There will be designated times each day for Scouts to move freely through camp. Scouts can use this time to

visit their favorite program area, work on extra merit badges, develop skills, and work on various camp

awards. Scouts must have a buddy as they move through camp.

Afternoon Program More information will be made available shortly. Most selections will be made at camp and not through the

online system. The major exception will be the footsteps program… for more info see the footsteps section

Siesta From the end of Lunch to 2:15 PM will be a designated siesta time for the entire camp. Troops are expected

to stay in their campsite and relax to regain energy for the remainder of the day. Card games, reading, and

naps are highly encouraged.

Evening Program Each night, Scouts can participate in one of several activities. These are both Merit Badge and Non-

Merit Badge style activities. Leaders will be given a complete list of activities at the Sunday night leaders

meeting. All evening merit Badges must be registered in the system. Evening merit badges will be offer

twice, first Monday & Tuesday night, must attend both sessions. The same badges will be offered again

Wednesday & Thursday night, must attend both sessions.

Troop Activities The evening program hour is designed to promote troop activities. Competitions between troops are

encouraged. If a troop has a special activity or project that they would like to do, please let the Program

Director or Area Director know so that they may fit it in to the schedule. The staff is willing to work with you

to design a program to meet the needs of your unit. This time is ideal for campsite improvements,

counseling, and bonding with your scouts

Iron Chef Challenge On Thursday Troops prepare and eat dinner in their campsite. Troops are encouraged to invite staff to eat

with them as well. Each patrol will receive a secret ingredient during lunch to include in dinner. Troops can

decide with the dining hall for storage or ice to keep your food safe until Thursday. Decide with the Camp

Cook as to when you may pick up your supplies or any other items you may need. Hot dogs are also available

at your request. It also gives the Kitchen staff a break and allows time for a staff meeting. Please feel free to

contact the Camp Director or Program Director for more information.

Camp T-shirt Day At camp, we would like to encourage a sense of unity among all

the Scouts at camp. An easy way for us to achieve this is through

uniform appearance. So, each day of the week we will feature a

different t-shirt as part of the activity uniform.

The Chapel A Scout is Reverent: Babcock-Hovey has a beautiful outdoor chapel and it is available at any time during the

week. We will have a chaplain to serve the camp each week. There will be a non-denominational service

each Friday night after dinner, which all Scouts and Leaders are encouraged to attend. Offerings made at the

service go toward the Camp Babcock-Hovey Bible Fund started decades ago to provide Holy Books from all

faiths for any Scout that cannot afford one of their own

Camp Service Project Landfills Do Not Need Medicine Bottles!

Anyone on prescription medicines finds themselves a bit uncomfortable when throwing away so many empty medicine bottles. It is obvious our landfills do not need these plastic containers! There is enough trash going into the landfills already.

Medicine Wrapped in Paper

While first world nations throw away perfectly good medicine

bottles, medical pharmacies and hospital facilities in Malawi

often find themselves with nothing except torn pieces of paper in

which to wrap medicine for their patients. This is often seen in rural hospitals and villages where the poorest

of the nation try to live and survive. You can help to change this.

Please Remove the Labels

Save up a group of your containers when you have completed that portion of your prescription. Place them in

boiling water until you can easily remove the labels, and the glue. Then box or bag them and bring them to

camp

Order of the Arrow Tshcipey Achtu Lodge, Order of the Arrow, will be ever-present in

ceremonies this summer and there is no finer place to experience the

ceremonies team than our Opening and Closing Campfires.

OA ELECTIONS: Council Units are encouraged to help restore a great

tradition by signing up for your Unit’s OA Elections at summer camp! In-

council Unit Leaders must let the Camp OA Representative know at

Registration or Sunday Night Dinner. Units must have at least 50% of

their unit attending to hold the election. Elections will be held late

Sunday and Monday evenings unless requested otherwise.

OA BROTHERHOOD CONVERSION- on Wednesday night at camp the lodge will be offering a Brotherhood

Conversion Ceremony. If you are part of Tschipey Achtu Lodge and have been an Ordeal Member for at least

10 months by the time of summer camp than you are eligible to go through your Brotherhood Ceremony. All

members. Listen up at meals for more information.

Thursdays –ORDER OF THE ARROW DAY! The Order of the Arrow, which is the Honor Society of Camping, has

a key place in camp. Thursdays are set-aside to acknowledge the Order of the Arrow. All that day Scouts and

Scouters who are members of any OA Lodge are highly encouraged to wear their Lodge class B’s and there

sash with their Class ‘A’ uniform to dinner and Vespers. The Camp OA Representative will be available all

week to answer questions about the Order of the Arrow.

project in the afternoon during Siesta (directly after lunch). Additional service opportunities exist at other

times, as well. Arrowmen of any Lodge are encouraged to serve cheerfully while at camp. Please consider

how your OA members might enhance Camp Babcock Hovey during your stay! Meet at the Commissioner's

Shed after lunch!

“MEET THE CHIEF” –Wednesday after Lunch. All Units are encouraged to send their Troop OA

Representative and other OA members to the Porch of Sci Tech to “Meet the Chief!” The Tschipey Achtu

Wednesday's Ice Cream Social the “Ghost Deer Trading Post” of Tschipey Achtu Lodge will be open for OA

members where they can purchase OA Lodge Flaps, T-shirts, and Much Much more.

Hiawatha Program

Footsteps of Hiawatha (The First-Year Camper Program)

The Footsteps of Hiawatha is Babcock-Hovey’s first-year camper program. The

Footsteps of Hiawatha has two distinct yet complementary aspects. First, the

Footsteps of Hiawatha is Babcock-Hovey’s main resource for first year campers.

The program introduces the campers with a “Get Acquainted” Tour as they go

to different program areas through the week, while also offering a survey of

Camp Babcock-Hovey’s Flora and Fauna, those new to camp will benefit from

the Footsteps of Hiawatha. Secondly, the Footsteps of Hiawatha program is

designed to add rank advancement along with merit badge achievement. Most

of the skills needed for Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class are taught in

this program. New Scouts can be instructed in everything from first aid to

orienteering to knot tying.

The Footsteps of Hiawatha will run in the afternoon program time (sessions 456) and will be administered in

the Native American Center. Scouts will be put into Footsteps of Hiawatha patrols. Please NOTE during

session 4 they need to be registered for footsteps NOT a MB. Each Troop that has six or more Scouts in the

program must have a Scout Leader help out with their patrol. The first afternoon session will include

separating the Scouts into patrols so they can work on Patrol names, flags, and yells. After the first afternoon

session, patrols will move to different program areas in camp as a Footsteps of Hiawatha patrol, and enjoy

activities in these areas. Scouts will participate in programs in the Scoutcraft, Personal Fitness, Nature, and

Aquatics areas. While the Scouts are trekking along and are at the Footsteps of Hiawatha area, they are able

to work on earning points by completing requirements, these points can be used whenever they are in the

Footsteps of Hiawatha program area to play games for a designated length of time, or they can be saved

through the week to spend on higher rewards such as visits to our BB gun range, an afternoon session at the

Bouldering Wall, a session of fishing at Pooler’s pond, or the opportunity to throw a designated object, (ie.

water balloons, whip cream pies, etc) at a beloved staff member during our closing ceremony.

We think this program is exciting and challenging for the new boys. Scouts must be registered through the

on-line system, like Merit Badges. It is the responsibility of the unit to sign the Scouts handbook. Upon

checkout, you will be provided an attendance report and a listing of skills covered to use in evaluating a

Scout’s skills.

Scouts who only need to work on certain requirements can visit in the afternoon to work on only those

requirements. Please consult the area staff for more information.

All aquatic requirements will be done with the Footsteps of Hiawatha patrols Tuesday and Thursday at the

pool during the first afternoon session, this will be revised in the case of a storm.

Paths of Hiawatha Hiawatha’s Warrior is a unique honor camper program begun in 2015, and available only at Camp Babcock Hovey. The program has tracks for both campers, adults & units.

It offers 3 levels of recognition with distinct ceremonies and totems. The

Warriors program is designed to enrich the summer camp experience by

introducing Hovey & Finger Lakes history and lore, and by promoting

environmental awareness and advancement, while reinforcing the aims

and ideals of Scouting.

Warrior’s Path – For scouts

Chieftain Path – For Leaders

Tribal Recognitions – For units

Warriors Path (Honor Scout)

A program for all scouts, to challenge themselves in getting the most out of camp. Each year a scout attends

they can travel further down path to becoming a warrior. This is a true honor that will bring scouts back to

camp year after year.

Hiawatha Chieftain Summer camp is not just for the Scouts, Leaders should have fun as well. The Hiawatha Chieftain allows

Leaders just that chance. Like the Hiawatha’s Tribe, Leaders must meet certain criteria to be eligible for this

award. This is a chance for Leaders to show their Scouts that they can do more then just drink coffee and sit

around camp. A sample of these requirements is at end of this manual.

Hiawatha’s Tribe (Honor Patrol)

In 1995, we began a program to encourage patrols to work together. By meeting certain criteria, patrols will

be eligible to earn the Baden Powell Patrol segment to wear on their uniform. The requirements are listed on

the score sheet that is included in the Forms section of this manual. All members of the patrol who meet

those requirements will receive a certificate and the Baden Powell Patrol segment. If you are in need of

materials to complete any of the requirements, please see the Program Director. A sample of these

requirements is at end of this manual.

Babcock’s Best (Honor Troop)

Troops who go “above and beyond” in their camp program are eligible to be one of Babcock’s Best. This new

honor goes to troops who really come to camp with a lot of Scout Spirit. Certain requirements must be met

to earn this honor, one being that all your patrols earn Hiawatha’s Tribe Status. Troops completing all the

requirements will receive a special Honor Ribbon and will be recognized at the Friday night campfire. A

sample of these requirements is at end of this manual.

One thing is for sure about journalism: It is never boring. For a reporter, almost every day is different from the last. One day you might interview the mayor of the city, the next day report on a car accident, and the day after that preview a new movie.

Meet at Pen Yann

Finger Printing Thursday Evening

Scouts will learn about and use an important technique that is used by law enforcement officers, along with other materials like matching dental records and DNA sampling, to help identify amnesia victims, missing persons, abducted children, and others

Meet at Sci Tek

Disabilities Awareness Evening W only

Look around at the Scouts in your unit, the members of your sports teams, and the kids in your class - you will see that each person has their own personalities, distinct interests and ideas, different physical features, and different strengths and needs.

Special Programs These are BSA National program that portions of can be completed at camp. It is provided as informational

purposes only

National Outdoor Award The National Outdoor Award program recognizes Scouts for some above-

average participateion in challenging outdoor activities. A combination of merit

badges, rank, and activities qualify Scouts for hiking, aquatics, camping,

adventure and riding awards.

The five National Outdoor Awards badges recognize a Boy Scout or Varsity Scout

who demonstrates knowledge and experience in camping, hiking, aquatics,

riding, or adventure. Scouts earning the National Outdoor Awards badges have

demonstrated that they are knowledgeable, safe, and comfortable in the

outdoor activity covered by the badge.

Supernova If you thrive on challenge, then earning the Supernova award will be right up

your alley. To be eligible, you must be a First Class Scout or higher. As a

prerequisite, you must first earn any three of the four Nova awards for Boy

Scouts. With your parent’s and unit leader ’s help, you must select a council-

approved mentor who is a registered Scouter. You may NOT choose your parent

or your unit leader (unless the mentor is working with more than one youth).

The Boy Scout Supernova awards recognize superior achievement by a Boy Scout

in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). All

experiments or projects should be conducted using the highest level of safety

protocol and always under the supervision of a qualified, responsible adult. The Scout should always have a

buddy when meeting with his counselor or mentor.

Ranger Award Some of our Explorations will satisfy requirements for the ranger award for those

youths who are also registered in venturing.

High adventure and the outdoors have always been of interest to young Americans as

well as an important part of the BSA program. Because of the attraction of high

adventure, the Ranger Award is available to all Venturing youth members of the Boy

Scouts of America.

The purpose of the award is to encourage Venturers to achieve a high level of outdoor

skills proficiency; recognize achievement of this high level of outdoor skills proficiency;

provide a path for outdoor/high-adventure skills training; and establish Rangers as a

highly-trained leadership resource for crews, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and the

community.
