Champagne

LOUIS ROEDERER, founded in the 18th century, remains family owned, a proud claim becoming increasingly rare in these days of financial wheeling and dealing in the world of Champagne. Combined with extensive vineyard holdings providing most of their production needs, the large reserves of

wines stored in oak are very much a feature of their thermostatically controlled cellars, ensuring the ability to offer a remarkably consistent high standard of quality.

POL ROGER, founded in the 1849 and now owns 87 hectares of vineyards on prime sites in the Epernay Valley and on the Cotes des Blancs. Great

Britain is, and always has been, the premier export market for Champagne Pol Roger: a tradition dating back to the 1860's. This supply is supplemented by grapes purchased on long-term contracts with growers based on the best sites in the region. Total production at Pol Roger is in the region of 1.5

million bottles per annum, making them one of the smaller of the Grandes Marques. The cellars extend some 7 kilometres beneath the streets of Epernay and are carved out of the local chalk over three levels. They are amongst the coolest and deepest in the region, a factor which contributes to

the famously fine bubbles in Pol Roger's champagnes.

BRUNO PAILLARD, was born in Reims in 1953. His lineage of brokers and growers in the two Grands Crus villages of Bouzy and Verzenay dates back to 1704. After 3 years of working, improving his know how, he finally reaches the style of his dreams. 1994, Bruno Paillard purchases his first vineyards; 3

hectares in Oger, a beautiful Grand Cru of the Cote des Blancs. Now, the vineyards of the house cover 26 hectares.

PANNIER was founded by Louis Eugene Pannier in 1899 in Dizy, next to Epernay. A group of wine growers purchased the house in 1974. During an archaeological study in 1999, a XIV century rock carving of an archer was found in the cellars. This carving became the new house logo with the motto

‘Ad perfectionem intendere’-we aim for perfection.

CATTIER is situated in Chigny les Roses, a charming village at the heart of the ancient Champagne region, between Reims and Epernay. The Cattier family has owned the vineyards since 1763. From 1918 it began making its own champagnes and selling them under the family name. The

House is still an independent family enterprise with annual sales of a million bottles, 60% of which are exported to over 70 countries. Its vineyards cover over 30 hectares of the prestigious Montagne de Reims terroir and is mainly classified as Premier Cru. The vines are grown using responsible

viticultural methods in order to preserve the environment and the terroir.

BARON-FUENTE hail from Charly sur Marne, in the west of Champagne and were founded in the 17th century as the Baron family. Dolores Fuente is the daughter of Spanish immigrants. Gabriel Baron and Dolores Fuente met at the local dance hall. In 1961, at the occasion of his marriage to Dolores, Gabriel Baron was given 1 hectare of vineyards by his father. In 1967, as a symbol of their union, Gabriel Baron and Dolores Fuente founded the house

Baron-Fuente. The first bottles were produced and sold directly from the house. Since then, the company kept on developing year after year. In 1982, their daughter Sophie joined Gabriel and Dolores and started working with her parents. In 1992, their son Ignace also joined the still growing family house, which owns by then already 13 hectare of vineyards. Today, Champagne Baron-Fuente is the owner of 38 hectare of vineyards and is still

family owned.

Sparkling wines

At the start of the 19th century, a young Flemish man, Jean-Baptiste Ackerman, was well aware of the reputation of the wines from the Val de Loire. The young man had noticed that in these ancient, cool limestone quarries the white wines of the region had a tendency to sparkle naturally and that the

caves along the banks of the Loire combined the optimum conditions to produce Saumur Brut. And so he became the founder in Saumur of the "Methode Traditionnelle". For forty years he was the only producer of this Val de Loire wine with fine bubbles. As soon as he arrived in the Saumur area

he had got to know the daughter of a rich banker - Mademoiselle Laurance - and shortly afterwards he married her. Thus was born the Maison Ackerman Laurance. In 1936, when the classification system was set up, Saumur Brut was granted AOC (Appellation d'origine Controlee) status.

In 1956, Ackerman Laurance decided to unite its destiny with the Remy Pannier group to form the leading producer of Val de Loire wines and the one by which the others are judged.

The Maison De Neuville was also founded in Saint Hilaire Saint Florent in 1856. De Neuville joined Remy Pannier in 1977 and continues in the group Ackerman - Remy Pannier to demonstrate its know-how in selecting the best Lore wines.

BARON PATRICK de LADOUCETTE continued the tradition of high quality wines and added to the 200 years of history, a rare vintage, Baron de L This remarkable wine is only produced in the best vintages. Baron de L is recognized as one of the greatest wines of the world with a finesse and exceptional

CHEREAU CARRE have always remained faithful to its past: the promotion of the best sur lie Muscadets in the restaurant and specialist wine outlets sectors. 2003 he now heads the whole enterprise.

Bordeaux

CHATEAU HAUT MARBUZET produces one of the most hedonistic and voluptuous wines in the Medoc today. It is classified as a cru bourgeois, yet its wines regularly outshine many offerings from its more illustrious grand cru classes neighbours. The 40 hectare estate is located about 2 kilometres north of Cos d'Estournel in the tiny hamlet of Marbuzet in St-Estephe. Its vineyards are well situated facing the Gironde estuary and are planted on

gravel rich soils. The property was purchased in 1952 by Herve Duboscq and is now owned and managed by his son, Henri. The wine is now typically a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The high percentage of Merlot accentuates the fleshy, supple side of the wine and this is

further accentuated by harvesting as late as possible and by maturing the wine in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months. Henri Duboscq's wines are rich and voluptuous to drink young with plenty of concentrated fruit and chocolaty-vanilla aromas, yet also age beautifully.

CHATEAU DE PEZ & CHATEAU HAUT BEAUSEJOUR were purchased by the famed Louis Roederer Champagne house and with whom immediately set

about improving the vineyards and cellars. The wines of Chateau de Pez have an attractive tannic structure worthy of further ageing. They are sometimes referred to as the ‘Pomerols’ of St-Estephe, in part due to the smooth roundness brought to the wine by the Merlot vines grown on the exceptional soils. They tend to be dark in colour and have great length, body and distinction. Chateau Haut Beausejour is made from a selection of

grapes from the finest slopes of St Estephe combined with an expertise that brings the balance and distinction of the finest Medoc wines.

ROBERT GIRAUD can only really describe itself as a shipping company in the full sense of the expression since 1975, when the decision was taken to market a representative sample of Bordeaux wines. The Company's emphasis on producing fine wine as well as selling it reflects this ambivalence. Giraud the shipper has the same high standards as Giraud the winemaker. This means, first and foremost, that all the wines aged in the Company's

cellars receive the same respect, from top-of-the-range generic wine to French non-appellation vin de table.

JOSEPH DROUHIN was founded in 1880 by the then 22-year-old, this famous Burgundy Negociant is still family owned. Now in the 4th generation, Maison Joseph Drouhin owns extensive parcels throughout the region and in Chablis. Continuing the work started by the young Joseph Drouhin, the family domaines extending to some 73 hectares have been 100% organic since 1993 and the Chablis properties, based at the enchanting Moulin de

Vaudon have been run on biodynamic principles since 1998. Amongst the famous Crus owned by the family is the world-renowned Clos des Mouches, one of the earliest purchases made by Joseph. This property produces very fine white and red which far transcends the Beaune appellation it bears.

MAISON ALBERT BICHOT'S family can be traced back to 1350. In 1831, Bernard Bichot, descendant of an old Burgundian family, founded the company

which still carries his name. The following generations continued the worldwide extension while investing important sums in the acquisition of vineyards. In recent years, large investment and many awards including 'White Winemaker of the Year' in 2011 at the International Wine Challenge,

follows on from 'Red Winemaker of the Year' in 2004.

CAVE DE LUGNY'S vineyards were already well known in the 18th century, when the wines coming from the vines of Saint Pierre, the Crets and the Grande Vigne were considered “fine”. Following the destruction of the vines by phylloxera between 1880 and 1887, the 500 hectares of the village’s

vineyards were patiently reconstituted from 1883 and would progressively again become the principal activity of the region. Officially founded on the 30th January 1927 the Cooperative Vinicole de Lugny was necessary to answer the continuing sales problems caused by over

production at the time.

ALAIN GAUTHERON in 1977 became the 6th generation of winegrowers run by his father Jean. From 8 hectares then to 25 hectares today his son Cyril now runs the estate made up of three appellations; Petit Chablis, Chablis & Premier Cru Chablis. The estate now produces 150,000 bottles per year.

REGNARD, one of the oldest and most prestigious houses in Chablis, was founded in 1860 by Zephir Regnard. In 1984, Baron Patrick de Ladoucette purchased Regnard and has perpetuated the style and tradition of the wines ever since. The Baron's experience in modernizing the de Ladoucette cellars in Pouilly-sur-Loire inspired him to make similar changes at Regnard, including thermo-controlled stainless steel fermentation tanks and

sodium lamps in the ageing sheds to prevent light damage.

DOMAINE SEGUINOT BORDET family’s roots in Maligny, can be traced as far back as 1590. Having been passed down through the generations Jean-Francois Bordet is now in control after an apprenticeship with his grandfather. The vines are on the right bank of the Serein river, 16 hectares lie on a perfect south, south-east exposition. He is also lucky enough to own a slice of Fourchaume, felt by many to be the finest of the premier cru vineyards. The wines are carefully made in a well equipped modern winery, with vinification in stainless steel vats to preserve freshness. Jean-François places

particular emphasis on obtaining the best fruit possible, through careful pruning, debudding and harvesting. His approach is clearly contemporary, but it delivers very stylish wines which fully express both the fruit and terroir.

Rhone and Southern France

THE BRUNIERS' story begins in 1898 with Hippolyte Brunier. A modest farmer who lived off the land, Hippolyte kept less than a hectare of vines to make his own wines. His small vineyard was at one of the highest points in between Chateauneuf-du-Pape and Bedarrides, a stony plateau called “La Crau”. The elevation of this terrain had prompted the construction of a communication tower in the late 18th century to transmit telegraph messages

between Marseilles and Paris. Otherwise, the allure of this barren landscape is not immediately discernable—there is nothing but galets roules, or rounded stones, as far as the eye can see. Up so high, the vineyards are exposed to all kinds of elements—rain, hail, scorching sunshine, and especially

the unruly Mistral. This was unwelcome terrain where only the toughest vigneron dare plant, although the notorious mistral works wonderfully to prevent rot. However difficult to farm, Hippolyte saw how the wine from his parcel pleased others, and he began bottling more, gradually increasing his

vineyard holdings to sixteen hectares. His sons helped work the farm, although most of the grapes were being sold off as premium fruit to negociants. The Bruniers weathered many storms—not the least of which was the ravaging of their vineyards by phylloxera. Hippolyte’s grandson, Henri, eventually joined the family business, and with him came great changes: replanting the vineyards, the construction of a new winery, bringing

temperature control into the winery to protect the wines during the fermentations, and most importantly, the launching of the domaine’s first bottlings under the Vieux Telegraphe label. After years of closer study, La Crau proved to be a privileged vineyard site. At the extreme southeast of the

appellation, a large three-meter trench in the vineyard reveals its stratifications, millions of years in the making. The layers show early alluvial deposits, limestone, silica, and a robust red clay (known as molasse) that has come to characterise this terrain. Sitting on the surface of the soil, the galets hold

important functions: they insulate the vines from both the cold and the heat, and they provide ideal drainage for the roots. Henri retired in 1988 and left the domaine in the hands of his two sons, Daniel and Frederic.

DOMAINE LA ROQUETE-In September 1986, Rene Laugier wanted to retire but had no successors to take over La Roquette (as it was then known), his domaine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. When Daniel and Frederic Brunier bought the domaine, it was a logical choice. The Brunier brothers had been

proving their worth as rising young stars of the appellation.

DOMAINE LES PALLIERES-By 1998, the Roux brothers wanted to make a change. With no future successors to take their place, they decided to sell. The Brunier brothers, Daniel and Frederic, of the famed Vieux Telegraphe in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, having distinguished themselves time and time

again with world class wines. A casual discussion over lunch at Chez Panisse between Daniel and Kermit Lynch, the Brunier’s longtime American importer, spontaneously turned into a game plan to revive the faded jewel—Les Pallieres.

CHATEAU DE LA GARDINE is probably best known for the shape of its bottles, after the owner Gaston Brunel purchased the estate in 1943, looked to expand the cellars found an old hand blown bottle, and after finding an Italian bottler that could replicate this shape in 1952 the bottle was born.

Today under a new trading house Brunel Gardine, the company now looks after many appellations in the Rhone Valley including the recent purchase of Chateau Saint Roch in Lirac.

DOMAINE SAINT GAYAN was purchased eighty years before the French Revolution by a Lieutenant called Pierre Goubert. At that time, it contained nothing in Sablet. Several generations later, the estate owned a quarter of the vines in Gigondas. The estate has remained in that family since. Indeed,

the names Goubert, Meffre and Roux turn up all the time in this valley. The Sablet vines came to the family three generations ago with a marriage to the Autran family, another local institution. Jean-Pierre has been in charge since 1980. He has bought another eight hectares over that time. He sells his

Sablet red without the village appellation since he has always had a good market for it as a Cotes du Rhone. As well as 70% Grenache and 20% syrah, it contains 10% Carignan, an often-derided “secondary” variety, which is marvellous when the vines are old. It sees no oak and gets lots of stirring up with

delestage and even “cliquage” in which oxygen is blown through the juices. He picks the Grenache a bit later than average, but likes the Syrah fresh.

DOMAINE DU TARIQUET have just celebrated their centenary in 2012. From the Artaud family in 1912 and their daughter Helene marrying Pierre Grassa, a hairdresser born in France to Spanish parents, begin the journey of restoring this property to its former glory. Thanks to their efforts the

vineyards once again began producing Bas-Armagnac brandies. In 1982 they start producing quality white wines. Two of their four children remain on the property and continue the tradition. The next generation are now winemakers themselves and will soon be writing the next chapter of the story...

MASI is the history of a family and its vineyards in Verona, part of the Veneto. The name itself derives from the Vaio dei Masi, the small valley purchased at the end of the XVIII century by the Boscaini family, still its owners today. Masi now has lands in the best terroir sites of the Venetian

regions with vineyards and historic estates. Since 1973, Masi has collaborated with the Conti Serego Alighieri family, descendants of the poet Dante, on their estates in Valpolicella.

Masi, directed today by Sandro Boscaini, is a family company dating back seven generations. Its strength lies in its highly motivated and highly skilled staff, loyal to the company, working in the disciplines of marketing, viticulture and winemaking. They work together in the Technical Group, whose goal

it is to preserve and bring up to date the viticultural and winemaking inheritance of the Venetian regions. Masi staff are ambassadors for their homeland all over the world.

SASSICAIA-In the 1920s the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dreamt of creating a ‘thoroughbred’ wine and for him, as for all the aristocracy of the time, the ideal was Bordeaux. In the 1940s, having settled with his wife Clarice on the Tenuta San Guido on the Tyrrhenian coast, he experimented

with several French grape varieties and concluded that the Cabernet had "the bouquet I was looking for." The Marchese's first vintages were not warmly received. Critics accustomed to light, local wines were not encouraging; it was not taken into

consideration that wines made from the more complex Cabernet Sauvignon grape would need more time to mature and develop. And thus from 1948 to 1967, Sassicaia remained a strictly private affair, only to be consumed at Tenuta San Guido.

Each year, a few cases were stored to age in the Castiglioncello di Bolgheri cellar. The Marchese soon realized that by ageing the wine it improved considerably.

It was not until 1968 that Sassicaia was first commercially released – the welcome was worthy of a Bordeaux Premier Cru. Over the next few years, the cellar was moved to a temperature controlled location, steel fermentation vats replaced wooden vats, and French barriques

were introduced to the ageing process.

TENUTA DELL'ORNELLAIA was founded in 1981, in a beautiful, unspoiled part of Tuscany. From the outset, the mission was to produce outstanding wines. Since then passion and dedication, coupled with a unique terroir and an extraordinary microclimate, have brought the Tenuta dell'Ornellaia's

prestigious labels great success and recognition as one of the most important wineries in the world. Production dictated by the nature of the vintage, hand-harvesting only when the grapes are fully ripe, the grapes of the individual vineyards fermented

separately, in the respect of a unique and precious terroir. These are just a few of the choices made by Ornellaia, following a philosophy that aims for quality from the beginning.

Spain

C.V.N.E., or to give it its full name, Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana (The Northern Spanish Wine Company) was established on the 24th of March 1879 in Haro, Rioja. Set up by two brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asua, their aim was to capitalise on the flourishing new trade in wine.

C.V.N.E. is based in the traditional neighbourhood of the station, in the heart of the Rioja wine region. Historically, some of the oldest wineries of Rioja Alta established themselves here in order to benefit from the ease of transport via rail to the port of Bilbao, the most efficient form of transport in those

days. By 1900, the winery had an extraordinary ageing capacity of 80,000 bottles, which was most unusual at the time, as most wineries sold their wines as soon as possible. C.V.N.E. is still controlled by the direct descendants of the founding family. Now in its fifth generation, the company has been

quoted on the Madrid stock exchange since 1997. C.V.N.E. farms half of its grape crush. The remainder is purchased from long term growers.

BODEGAS MIGUEL TORRES was founded by Jaime and Miguel Torres in 1870 and has always been one of the most consistently quality-orientated wineries in Spain as well as one of the largest and most innovative. Miguel A Torres currently presides as the President of the company. He studied

enology and viticulture in Burgundy and Montpelier has been responsible for pioneering a number of technological advances within Spain and later on in Chile. With a portfolio of great depth; from the more accessible styles to wine blended with rediscovered varieties; all have the Torres hallmark of

quality. With exciting developments in their Spanish portfolio as well as vineyards in Chile and California, Torres takes its innovative and stylish winemaking techniques to produce premium wines across the globe.

LA BASCULA is the name given to the Spanish wine range produced by Ed Adams MW and Bruce Jack. The term means weighing scales, and represents the balance between indigenous Spanish varieties and modern winemaking. The philosophy is small volumes and really high quality. The wines are

made to truly represent excellent value for money and really show off the areas they come from. The result is fine, ripe, concentrated wines. La Bascula started life with just two wines in the range, both Monastrell based red wines from Jumilla, south-east Spain. They now offer a full range with recent

additions from Rioja, Catalonia and an exquisite dessert wine from near Alicante.

Australia

McGUIGAN becomes synonymous with Australian wine's new wave. Brian McGuigan brings a fresh approach to winemaking and running a winery. First managing a highly successful Hunter Valley Winery and then building his own major wine business with the help of wife Fay and younger brother Neil. Working his winery's cellar door in the early 70's Brian McGuigan wasn't the usual stand-offish winemaker. Keen to find out what wines and styles

his customers enjoyed, Brian quickly becomes a champion of the wine consumer. Later in life, Brian joins father Perc in being named a Hunter Valley Living Legend. McGuigan is the only winery in the world to have won 'world's best winemaker' three times is a testament to their commitment to

quality.

The Tempus Two Story TEMPUS TWO is situated in one of Australia’s oldest wine regions, and one of Australia’s best known wine families. Founder Lisa McGuigan is the

fourth generation of a dynasty of celebrated vintners, the McGuigans. Our iconic cellar door nestled in the foothills of the Hunter Valley’s Brokenback Ranges, just outside Pokolbin.

Launched in 1998 as Hermitage Road, the street on which the McGuigan family lived, the brand started small, in the corner of the McGuigan winery. The business grew rapidly, which brought the brand into the sights of the French Appellations body which took issue with the use of “Hermitage”, a

protected wine region in the Rhone Valley. And so, Tempus Two, which is Latin for “second time” was born, creating a truly Australian iconic brand.

MAGPIE ESTATE is a joint venture, which began in 1993, between famous Barossa winemaker Rolf Binder and English wine merchant Noel Young. Both Rolf and Noel have a passion for Rhone varietals. The fruit comes from 15 long-favoured sites in the premium Northern drawing on Rolf’s deep

understanding of the Barossa.

New Zealand

ANTHONY JOSEPH VIDAL, a young emigrant from Spain, was one of the first winemakers to appreciate the natural potential of the area. He established Vidal Estate in 1905 and his spirit of adventure coupled with a lifelong commitment to crafting classic, elegant wines remains an inspiration to this day. He was 22 years old when he arrived in New Zealand from Spain in 1888. His first eleven years were spent in Wanganui, working for his uncle, pioneer winemaker Joseph Soler. He then moved to Hawkes Bay where in 1905 he purchased a small property in Hastings. Once the stables that occupied the

site were converted into a cellar, Anthony set about planting some grapevines. It was from there he became one of New Zealand’s early wine innovators and his success led to expansion with further vineyard plantings in Te Awanga and then Te Mata.

In 1979, New Zealand’s first winery restaurant – Vidal Estate Winery Restaurant - was opened at the original winery site. It was a milestone that has shaped the landscape of the New Zealand’s dining history. For over 30 years Vidal Estate Winery Restaurant has been an icon in Hawkes Bay, a place

fondly thought of and enjoyed by locals and a uniquely Hawkes Bay dining experience for visitors.

RAPAURA SPRINGS family winery shows the journey of the wines that begins far from the vineyards, at a point where the earth claims a share of the Wairau River. After a six-month journey through a rocky aquifer, the water is released to a spring that weaves through the vineyard. This spring,

depicted on their label, provides both the crystal clear, pure, water for their vines and guides the philosophy behind their family winery. Handcrafted superb wines at their state of the art winery, leaving the vineyards to tell their own story, with just a little nudge in the right direction from their experienced viticulture and winemaking teams. The result is a series of exceptional wines with distinct flavours that reflect the iconic regions they

come from.

South Africa

MEERLUST ESTATE has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Today, the traditional dedication to the art of winemaking continues under the guidance of Hannes Myburgh, eighth generation custodian of this seventeenth-century national monument.

Meerlust, with its historic manor house, classic wine cellar, family cemetery, dovecote and bird sanctuary is situated fifteen kilometres south of Stellenbosch, with the blue crescent of False Bay a mere five kilometres away. Wines are only made from grapes grown on the Estate which is uniquely

positioned for the production of wines with exceptional complexity and character. In the summertime, ocean breezes and evening mists roll in from the coast to cool the vineyards. The grapes ripen slowly, thus achieving full,

concentrated varietal flavours. The soils consist of predominantly deep, well drained Hutton and Clovelly soil types, affording the vines excellent drought resistance and an ideal substratum for producing concentrated, complex wines

BUITENVERWACHTING is a beautiful farm on the east-facing slopes of the magnificent Constantiaberg and barely 12km from False Bay, originally formed part of the Constantia Estate, which was founded by Simon van der Stel, the first Governor of the new Dutch colony at the tip of Africa.

From 1866, the fortunes of Buitenverwachting were inextricably linked to those of the Louw and Lategan families. One of the most colourful characters was Oom Danie Lategan, whose trademark was the freshly picked camelia he wore on his lapel every day. It was his daughter, Olivia Lategan, who was

to forge the link between the Lategans and the Louws. Born at Buitenverwachting, she returned as mistress of the farm when she married George Louw. Imbued with a sense of history, the Mueller family has retraced the roots of Buitenverwachting. The farm was lovingly restored to its former glory while

extensive planting of the most selected of cultivars was initiated. The result was a maiden grape harvest of 100 tonnes - the first harvest the farm had seen in 30 years. An historic achievement that lived up to its name: Buitenverwachting - "Beyond Expectation".

&

WATERKLOOF ESTATE wines emphasise restraint, elegance and a strong mineral character due to the vineyards’ exposed position on the upper slopes of the famed Schaapenberg Mountain. High above False Bay the Waterkloof vineyards face directly onto the Atlantic Ocean at the southern limit of the Stellenbosch wine region. This very special site with its strong maritime influence, steep aspect and unique soil profile allows for the production

of truly fine wines. The winemaking and viticultural team led by Nadia Barnard follow natural winemaking methods with minimal intervention, including the use of open-top fermenters, whole bunch pressing, wild yeast fermentation, extended fermentation periods and extra lees contact to

maximise the terroir character.

FALSE BAY VINEYARDS, established by Paul Boutinot, is a company that has grown out of many years of involvement in South Africa, which began at a time when their wines and potential was just being recognised. With knowledge and respect within the South African wine industry, Paul Boutinot has

been able to source top quality grapes for the re-launch of False Bay. First discovered by sailors confusing it for Table Bay to the north, False Bay has long been a haven for those navigating the treacherous Cape of Good Hope. The cool coastal breeze which sweeps off the Indian Ocean temper the

ripening process, extend the growing season and produce expressive wines with more precise varietal characters and purity. These lifted aromas make the wines accessible, perfectly balanced and full flavoured.

KLEINE ZALZE, is situated in the heart of the picturesque Stellenbosch Winelands, bordering the provincial town of Stellenbosch, affectionately known as “Little Europe”, Kleine Zalze provides an escape to a timeless era of Cape Dutch architecture, exquisite wine, fine dining and leisurely days spent with family and friends. The estate offers a variety of attractions, including Kleine Zalze’s award-winning wines, our critically acclaimed gourmet restaurant,

breathtaking hiking and cycling routes, the world-renowned De Zalze golf course and our luxurious four-star Cape Dutch style lodge. The farm was first promulgated in 1685, a time when many of the original wine estates were first laid out.

The farm is known to have produced grapes since at least 1695 when the first record of taxes payable to the Stellenbosch Town Council were made by the then owner of Kleine Zalze, Nicolaas Cleef, a German immigrant. At this time over 700 vines were recorded for tax purposes.

Kobus and Mariette Basson purchased Kleine Zalze in 1996 with Jan Malan, Mariette’s brother. Jan left the business in 2000 and Rolf Schulz, a German National, took up his share of the wine business. Kleine Zalze Lodge and Terroir Restaurant are wholly owned parts of Kleine Zalze.
