In1835,atameetingplacebelievedtobeonthebanksofMerriCreek,anagreementwasstruckbetweenagroupofWurundjerieldersandoneofMelbourne’sfounders,JohnBatman.Notlongafteritwassigned,thethenGovernorofNSWdeclareditinvalidonthebasisthatAboriginalshadnoclaimtotheland.OnFriday[4November2016],181yearsafterwhitesettlersgavetheWurundjeripeopleblankets,tomahawks1andflourinexchangefortheland,agroupofAboriginaleldersreturnedtoMerriCreek.TheycamefromaroundVictoriatodiscusstreatytalkscurrentlyunderwayinVictoria.…Thedetailsofanytreatyareyettobeagreedon,butitwouldbealegallybinding2documentcoveringAboriginalaffairsandrights,andaddressingpastinjustices.Suchsettlements3havebeenreachedbetweenindigenouscommunitiesandthosewhohavesettledtheirlandsinCanada,theUSandNewZealand.GunditjmaraelderAlmaThorpe,whocalledthemeeting,saidatreatywasimportantforfuturegenerations,whileothersspokeoftheneedtoaddressthenumberofIndigenouschildreninout-of-homecare,druguse,andhighincarceration4ratesofAboriginals.Therewasbroadsupportforthestategovernmenttoresourceanelderscouncil,butalsowidespreadmistrustofthegovernment’sagenda.…LidiaThorpe,thehonorarychiefexecutiveofthegroupsaidanytreatyneededinputfromallremainingFirstNationclans.‘Eldersbelievetheyhavebeenleftoutofdiscussions,thattheyarenotbeingheard,’MsThorpesaid.‘Ourcurrentrepresentationisnotatruereflectionofthevoiceofthisstate.’AtFriday’smeeting,whichattimeswasheated5,activistRobbieThorpesaidthatatreatywasneededto‘endthewar’whichhadgoneonsincethefirstsettlers.‘There’sbeenawartryingtoexterminateourpeoplesincethatday,’hesaid.‘Thereasontohaveatreatyistoendthatwar.’
