Tell us about your professional background: My hometown is Iselin, New Jersey. I grew up
there and in Seaside Heights, New Jersey. I graduated from the University of Miami (FL) Frost School of Music in 1972 with Bachelor Degrees in Music Theory/Composition and Studio Music/Jazz. I have had a long career as a full-time musician. During my time as a professional musician I have played with: Michel Legrand Orchestra; Miami Philharmonic; The Four Seasons; Della Reese; The Temptations; Mel Torme; The Four Tops; Dean Martin’s Gold Diggers; and Redd Foxx. I am a re-tired IT consultant and I am currently an antique dealer specializing in vintage electronics. I am also a member of the Capitol Area Concert Band, the Mt. Pulaski Band and I am founder/director of the Springfield Saxes saxophone quartet.
Relationship and length of time with the band: I moved to Springfield 20 years ago and was
brought into the band 19 years ago by then Springfield Municipal Director, Gene Haas. I became the manager of the Springfield Municipal Band in August 2016.
Goals for the band: I hope to continue the great tradition of this important cultural institution while broadening our appeal to all
members of our community.

Tom Philbrick earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois.
While at Millikin, he studied tuba with Mark Nelson and Bri-an Kiser. In 2005, Tom studied at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana with Mark Moore and earned a Mas-ters in Music Education.
Tom has taught instrumental music for 18 years and currently teaches at Springfield Southeast High School. He is also the band director band at Blackburn College and is an active member of the Douglas Avenue United Methodist Church Praise Band. Tom has also performed with the Decatur Municipal Band, Capitol Area Band, Tony Barron Orchestra, Frank Parker Dixieland Band, Heart of Illinois Brass Band, New Century Orchestra, Gene Trimble Dixieland Clown Band, and is a founding member of the Brick House Brass Quintet. Tom is in his sixth year of conducting the Springfield Municipal Band. He also conducts the 1st Illinois/2nd Iowa Volunteer Cavalry Regiment Civil War Brass Band in Springfield. His guest conducting experiences include the Cass County Junior High Band, Illinois Music Educators Association District 4 Junior High Band, as well as several productions for the Springfield Muni Opera (Aida, Miss Saigon, Jeckyl and Hyde) and the Springfield Theater Center (Dessa Rose, Chess). Tom’s wife, Bekah, is band director for the Auburn School District. They have two daughters,

Meet our 2017 Summer Interns for the Springfield Municipal Band. The future of the band is in the hands of our youth and we are excited to offer the opportunity for outstanding high school musicians to perform at different times throughout the summer with the Springfield Municipal Band.
