United States International Duo Piano Competition Winners’ Concert

2017

Each performer is categorized based on age, level, and the number of years the student has been performing. There are four levels: Elementary, Intermediate, Advanced, and Professional. All winners for the United States International Duo Piano Competition weredetermined by judges who reviewed and adjudicated the entries’ tape/CDs. Only those who have passed the judges’ critique are invited to perform in the Winners’ Concert. In the event a winner cannot participate in the Winners’ Concert, the teacher or another student may substitute for that participant.

“THE DUELING DUO”

BOB BAKERFormer jazz trombone player turned keyboard rock musician, Bob Chaz Baker began his performing career voted top trombone soloist at the Wichita Jazz Festival in 1971. He joined the group Smoke Ring along with Tommy Shaw (Styx) in 1972. The group soon changed their name to MS Funk. After touring with Jerry Lee Lewis, Chaz was influenced by Jerry Lee to change from playing horns to piano in one statement. “Horn players will come and go but they will always need piano players to Rock ‘n Roll.” Dedicating himself to keyboards, digital pianos and synthesizers, Chaz performed and recorded with a wide array of musicians including Tommy Shaw (MS Funk, Styx), Dan Fogelberg, Mark Andes (Firefall, Heart), Larry Stewart (Airborne) and Rosemary Butler (Jackson Brown, James Taylor). He has recorded at Paragon & Sound Studios, Paramount Studios, Widget Studios,and Northstar, Applewood, Caribou, FTM Studios.Bob’s most recent CD’s “Romance Language of Music” and “Christmas Morning” are indicative of the direction that his music is headed. Bob has played to sold out audiences at the Lone Tree Arts Center, Dazzle Jazz and performed with Liz Story and Lisa Downing at the Cherokee Ranchand Castle. He has recently returned from a tour in Spain where he performed with Mario Lopez Santos (Spain), Lisa Downing (USA) and Mine Kawakami (Japan).

NICK BUSHEFFPianist Nick Busheff is known as a diverse composer, director and performer of the concert stage. After years of classical training, degrees and awards from leading conservatories, he ventured into jazz and popular music. Busheff has shared the stage with Grammy, Oscar and Tony-winning artists and performed for celebrities and political dignitaries. His music was featured in the award- winning films Angel on Fire and The One Who Loves You where he made a cameo appearance. Busheff’s music directing credits include Brecht on Brecht, Anything Goes,From Bach to Billy Joel, Legends of the Piano, ABerlin Cabaret and many others. In 2013 Nick composed and performed music for Nancy Stohlman’s The Monster Opera which returned to the stage in 2015 to rave reviews. He recentlydid a short tour of Germany performing original compositions including the debut of his Grimm’sFairy Tales for Piano. Since 2013 Nick Busheff has been an annual guest artist at the United States International Duo Piano Competition and has been featured on both KUVO (jazz) and KVOD (classical) radio stations.
