I am very pleased to present this year’s Principal Report at the end of our second year at Salvado Catholic College. The format of my Principal report follows the strategic direction of the College, aligned with the points of a compass. The compass is symbolic in our strategic direction as we use it to guide our journey, similar to how Rosendo Salvado used a compass on many of his journeys. Good News of Jesus Christ DISCIPLESHIP – is our calling. We are committed to deepening our relationship with Jesus. Educating at the margins. Engaging with the most vulnerable and marginalised in our society. (Catholic Identity) We have once again celebrated many Prayer Services and Masses at Salvado Catholic College throughout 2017 as a College Community and part of the Parish of St Francis Xavier. It is wonderful to continue the tradition of Salvado Day celebrations and this year we celebrated Mass on this day as well. We have continued the tradition of attending St Francis Xavier Church for the Assumption Mass and it was great to see the number of students and families attending the Family Parish Masses continue to grow. This year our first group of Year 3 students participated in the Parish Sacrament of Reconciliation. It was wonderful for our students to be receiving this Sacrament for the first time as part of the Parish and with other children from the Parish. We look forward to 2018 when our students in Year 3 celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time and our Year 4 students celebrate their First Eucharist. We have ensured that our Catholic social teachings and values have been areas that we continue to develop in our students and the community with the continuation of Mission Markets with money raised going to Caritas, Socktober for Catholic Missions, St Vinnies Winter Appeal and the Christmas Appeal to name a few. As we strive to embed a culture of Peace, Justice and Compassion in our College community, we strive to focus on the most vulnerable and marginalised in our society and provide support for them wherever we can in various ways. Our staff this year participated in a retreat to the Schoenstatt Shrine with Sr Lisette and the day was a wonderful experience for all involved as we focused on God’s merciful love and the Schoenstatt as a Place of Grace. A number of staff have also continued working towards their Accreditation and completing units and modules towards their Accreditation. We thank Fr Kaz once again for his time and commitment to his ministry as Parish Priest and sincerely thank him for his presence in our College community. He is a very busy man and I would like to personally thank him for his support of the College and of me. This year Mrs Marissa Munro has taken on the official role of Head of Religious Education and will continue in this role in 2018, working with all the staff to continue to ensure that we have our Catholic Identity at the forefront of all that we do as a Catholic College.

Principal’s Report

Good evening Fr Kaz, Board Chair Mr Dillon McLeod, Board Members, Friends of Salvado Executive and Committee members, Parents and Staff. I am very pleased to present this year’s Principal Report at the end of our second year at Salvado Catholic College. The format of my Principal report follows the strategic direction of the College, aligned with the points of a compass. Good News of Jesus Christ DISCIPLESHIP – is our calling. We are committed to deepening our relationship with Jesus. Educating at the margins. Engaging with the most vulnerable and marginalised in our society. (Catholic Identity)

As part of our goals of the Annual School Improvement Plan we have successfully continued to develop a nurturing community and promoting a Catholic education for all at Salvado Catholic College, assisting them to develop a greater understanding of the Gospel values and Jesus’ love for us all. We are continuing to develop and implement a Salvado charism throughout the College that will see our students and families continue to learn more about the life of Rosendo Salvado and how his life and values directly impact on all that we do here as a College community. The building of our Parish and College relationship has also continued to flourish and will continue to flourish as we grow each year.

Education & Learning LEARNING – is what we do. We are committed to learning at every level. Leadership formation. Transforming our people to lead outstanding Catholic communities. (Education)

The collection of data and analysis of where our students are at has been an area we have worked on further this year as a staff. Utilising the data we collect at Salvado Catholic College from various sources has assisted in our planning in all areas. We will have a continued focus in this area in 2018 and beyond, and implement a number of processes and documentations to ensure we are catering for the individual needs of all our students. The implementation of the MiniLit support program in 2017, lead my Mrs Maria Bradshaw has been a huge success and we have seen many of our students make some great progress in their literacy skills. The program has complemented the great work happening in our Learning Spaces. We have also continued to fine tune our Learning Plans and have implemented BrightPath to assist teachers in the analysis of writing samples throughout the year, and to help with moderating student achievement in relation to their writing skills. We have been very fortunate to be able to provide some extra support in our Learning Spaces with Education Assistants timetables to work within Learning Spaces to take smaller groups of students and focus on specific learning areas. Continual focus on Embedding the Early Years Learning Framework, National Quality Standards and the Western Australian Curriculum at Salvado Catholic College has seen the staff as a whole take ownership of our Quality Improvement Plan and Curriculum Plan to look at best practices and ensure a continual improvement mindset exists in all that we plan in our teaching and learning. At Salvado Catholic College we continue to respect that parents and carers are the first and most influential educators of their children, and we respect and have actively encouraged the partnership between the College and our parents/carers, to ensure that they are fully aware of where their child/children are on their individual learning journey.

One of our Annual School Improvement Plan goals has been the further development of the distributed leadership model throughout the College. We have further enhanced our Coordinator roles with Mrs Marissa Munro as Coordinator of Early Childhood Education and Student Support and Mrs Maria Bradshaw as Coordinator of Curriculum. We also have a number of staff in Key Teacher roles and all staff are members of particular focus groups. It is truly a team effort here at Salvado Catholic College!

We continue to ensure that we provide staff at Salvado Catholic College the opportunity for individual and team professional learning. We try to align all professional learning opportunities with the goals of individuals and the College to best cater for the learning experiences of our staff, and in turn our students.

Working together as a College Community ENGAGEMENT – is essential. We are committed to Catholic Education’s mission through relationships with all. Early years learning and care. Partnering across communities to provide the best opportunities for young families. (Community)

This year as part of our Annual School Improvement Plan we have focused on providing more Parent Education opportunities. We did this in several ways as a College, through Kindergarten Orientation and Parent/Teacher Interviews, Health Nurse involvement and through our eNewsletter and other forms of communication. In 2017 we also held some Parent Information evenings, which included the Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum session and a Literacy and Numeracy session that were reasonably attended. In 2018 we will continue to provide such Parent Information sessions, investigating further ways we can engage more of our parents and carers in attending. We continue to strive to enhance the student’s knowledge and experience of Catholic traditions through our Religious Education units of work and prayer. We also have Prayer Services, Prayer Assemblies and Masses that students are involved in. These liturgies have also been open invitations to our parents and carers as we continue to walk together on our faith journey. In focusing on engaging parents in their child/ren’s learning journey it has been wonderful to see many parents and carers assisting throughout the College in various ways in 2017. Whether as Learning Space or Library helpers, or throughout the year at the many College community events that we have held – THANK YOU! I would like to take this opportunity to thank our College Board members and Mr Dillon McLeod our Board Chair for their time and efforts in their role on the Board to assist in the planning of the present and future direction of the College, as well as ensuring that due diligence is maintained with the financial management of funds. They are exciting times at Salvado Catholic College as we continue to grow and embark on new building projects in the coming years. I would like to personally thank Mrs Sam Chapman for her time and efforts in her role as Finance Officer to ensure all things finance are up to date and balanced, maintaining a smile with all that needs to be done. Thank you also to Mrs Kasey Atwell, and more recently Mrs Judy Schwarz for being the face of the College when people enter the Administration. There is so much behind the scenes work that happens and their efforts too are very much appreciated.

A huge thank you to our first FoS Executive Committee lead so competently by Rebecca Furfaro. Thank you to Rebecca and the rest of the FOS executive consisting of Shadia, Nicole and Nicolette . We are very grateful and appreciative of the time and enthusiasm you have contributed to share in your FoS roles. You have worked tirelessly to ensure the foundations have been laid for what will be, I am sure, a wonderful parent body for many years to come in the College. FoS, and all involved have made a wonderful contribution to the community spirit at Salvado Catholic College in 2017 with “friend building” and “funds building” with numerous events throughout the year to bring the College together. Thank you to all involved and who assisted in different ways. A special mention to Mrs Shadia White for coordinating another amazing Book Fair and to Mrs Nicole Green for coordinating an entertaining and Quiz Night and putting her hand up to do it all again in 2018! It has been wonderful to allocate funds raised from FoS for the benefit of our students, as is and will always be the case at Salvado. We look forward to 2018 when we have our Nature Playground on the south side of the Junior Primary block in operation, funded in part by the College, a $10,000 grant from the State Government – Local Jobs Program and a contribution from FoS for $10,000. I would like to take this opportunity to also thank Mrs Ellen Arscott for coordinating the popular Salvado Play Group with the support of others so well this year – it is a wonderful opportunity to invite other families into our beautiful College and become a part of our welcoming community. It is important that we continue to focus as parents and carers on what talents we can contribute to the College community, ensuring that we all get involved in some way in making Salvado Catholic College a safe, positive and happy learning environment for all our students and a welcoming environment for all members of our College community. We continue to encourage all our parents and carers to engage in their child/ren’s learning journey and become active and regular contributors to our growing community. We look forward to continuing to develop a strong home/school partnership and culture in 2018 and beyond.

Stewardship of the Environment & Resources ACCOUNTABILITY – is not optional. We have personal and collective responsibility for our system’s success. Health and wellbeing of students and staff. Providing learning environments where everyone feels safe and can flourish. (Stewardship)

Our continual focus on Student Well Being has seen us achieve much in this area. We have implemented the Keeping Safe Child Protection Curriculum throughout the College and are fortunate enough to have Marissa Munro on staff, trained in implementing this curriculum with new staff as they come on board each year. We have also worked on, and continually reviewed our Whole School Positive Behaviour Support Plan and Individual Student Plans. Embedding the Code of Conduct amongst staff and parents and further implementing ‘Make Jesus Real’ are areas we will continue to focus on in 2018 as well. Next year we will continue to run the Salvado Play Group from our Early Years Space and depending on numbers, plan on commencing the 3 Year Old Kindy Program again in Term 2 at this stage. We will have 2 Kindergarten, Pre-Primary and Year 1 classes and 1 Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 class. From commencing in 2016 with 105 students, we will be starting in 2018 with close to 250 students. We welcome many new students and families to the College in 2018 and I know they too will come to love all that we are about at Salvado Catholic College.

We look forward to the commencement of the next stage of our Primary Campus build and we will share more information as it comes to hand. We have also commenced initial planning of the Secondary Campus and our focus will be to continue working with Catholic Education Western Australia to provide facilities in staged building programs that will see Salvado Catholic College as a Catholic College of choice not only in Primary but through to Secondary as well. They are exciting times as we continue on our journey as a growing College community.

This year Salvado Catholic College undertook an Executive Director’s School Registration Audit process. At the conclusion of the audit, it was recognised that all required policies, procedures and documentation are in place and the 3 recommendations will be followed up on by the end of 2017. In 2018 Salvado Catholic College will be involved in a School Cyclic Review coordinated by Catholic Education Western Australia. We welcome another opportunity to ensure we have all systems and practices in place as a school and reflecting on our journey – where we have come from and where we are going!

In my reading about Rosendo Salvado, it is evident that he was a person true to his time and calling, he assumed he had something good to offer and he intended to bring about change in the life of the people he encountered. We are very blessed at Salvado Catholic College to have a staff who also strive to bring about change in the life of the students that they encounter and are entrusted to do so by our parents and carers.

I also read that Salvado had a strong sense of purpose, unwavering faith in hard work and persistence, and a vision of the future...which explains much of what he did. It is that strong sense of purpose and unwavering faith in hard work and persistence that truly makes our staff at Salvado Catholic College unique. I would like to thank them for their steadfast commitment to the students in their care and, to our families and just as important, to each other. They are a unique group of people who we are very blessed to have here at Salvado. I continue to feel very privileged to be given the opportunity to lead such a wonderful group of professionals. Thank you for all that you do!

Staffing Farewells and Welcomes Towards the end of Term 1, Mrs Kellie Down commenced Parental Leave. Kellie and her husband welcomed twins and Mrs Down has extended her Parental Leave until the end of 2018. At the end of 2017 we farewell Mrs Jess Humble who was appointed to replace Mrs Down in Year 1 for the rest of this year. I wish to thank Jess for her efforts and enthusiasm in the role of Year 1 Teacher. We wish her all the best for the future. We also farewell at the end of the year, Miss Emily Laurino, our first Foundation Staff member to leave us. It has been wonderful to see Emily grow in her role as Specialist Teacher over the last 2 years. I am sure Emily would agree it has been an experience taking all classes for various specialist lessons in our Foundation year. We wish her all the best as she moves back down south in 2018. I know that she will cherish the experience of being a Foundation Staff member at Salvado Catholic College, a title that she gets to keep, even after she leaves us. In 2018 we welcome 6 new staff members. Mrs Clare Jeeves, Miss Georgia Laird, Miss Rachel Cuccovia, Mrs Nicole Goff, Ms Kahlene Robinson and Miss Joanna Vinci. I know that they will come to love being a part of this amazing team we have at Salvado Catholic College. Staffing in 2018 Refer to Slideshow

In 2018 we will present our Strategic Plan for 2018 to 2020 to the Salvado Catholic College community. This plan has been a work in progress in developing and updating in 2017 with input from the Staff, College Board members, FOS and parents and carers.

Salvado Catholic College continues to be a wonderful place to come and work, play and pray! Our compass and strategic direction will guide us as we strive to be more like Jesus in all that we do and say, and work together in the best interests of our wonderful students. I am excited about the journey and what 2018 brings. Thank you all for being a part of what we are building!

Peace & Happy Days! Mr Santino Giancono Foundation Principal
