WCMS Association The WCMS Association is a thriving professional association of 700+ physicians from

16 western North Carolina counties. Beginning in 2017, WCMS will offer membership to WNC physician assistants Some of the services provided by the WCMS Association include:

Advocacy: shaping healthcare policy that strengthens the physician-patient bond Communications: e-Newsletters and social media to keep members up-to-date Networking: special events and affinity groups to connect physicians with one another Discounted Services: interpretation, legal, financial, practice management, and IT Education: events, resources and partnering with MAHEC Public Education: articles published across WNC news outlets written by physicians

WCMS Foundation The Foundation is the physician- and community-led charitable arm of WCMS, respected for its

leadership and innovation in addressing the following issues: Access to healthcare for low-income, uninsured residents is provided in two ways: 1) in all 16 counties

by our Health Access Counselors (HAC) who can enroll eligible consumers in the Health Insurance Marketplace, Medicaid, or Medicare and 2) in the WNC region by our HAC who can enroll eligible consumers into our nationally recognized charity care program, Project Access®.

Disparities in healthcare are addressed by the WCMS Interpreter Network (WIN) whose contractors speak 15 languages plus ASL and help ensure quality communication for quality care and... Prevention and wellness for WNC physician community & families The Foundation Endowment is an enduring gift for the health of our community administered by the Community Foundation of WNC which awards grants to health and wellness programs in WNC.

Mission: WCMS Association: WCMSA is the physicians’ voice advocating for the health of the physician, the patient, and the community, through strengthening the physician-patient relationship.

WCMS Foundation: WCMSF is the physician and community-led charitable arm of the medical society improving access to quality healthcare, decreasing disparities in health, and promoting health & wellness.

Vision: To be a dynamic physician community dedicated to a healthy, vibrant western North Carolina.

The Western Carolina Medical Society was established in 1885 by area physicians. Throughout its history, WCMS has been an innovator in supporting and advocating for physicians in the

practice of medicine and working collaboratively with area organizations to address the impact of the changing health care landscape on our communities.

WCMS is organized into two divisions, as outlined below.

Helping Physicians Connect with Other Physicians

WCMS’ Affinity Groups are a particular favorite for our physicians. These networking events provide a casual atmosphere for doctors to connect with others of a similar demographic or field of practice. Sponsorship is for one Affinity Group event (there are 2 to 4 events for each group throughout the year).

In addition to time for networking and connecting with other physicians, the Affinity Groups typically have a speaker or conversation centered around a certain topic. Content for the Affinity Groups is driven by a physician-champion for each group and is timely and relevant to each group’s need and interests.

Helping Physicians Keep Happy and Healthy

The issue of physician burnout and helping to promote wellness is an integral part of the WCMS Strategic Plan. WCMS’ Healthy Healer events are part of our new Physician Wellness Program which strives to help physicians focus on their personal well being. These events aim to provide physicians with tools and coaching to reduce stress and find balance. Topics such as mindfulness, relational health, and work-life balance are some of the many things that will be addressed in these gatherings. MINDFULNESS RETREAT A HEALTHY HEALER PROGRAM EVENT

TBD - SPRING 2017

Preventing Burnout & Promoting Wellness for our Medical Community

The Mindfulness Retreat will be WCMS’ first Healthy Healer Program event and will be by led by local clinical therapist, Scott MacGregor. Scott will led an intensive18 hour course to teach the practice of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). The event will consist of a full weekend (two 7 hour days, and four 1 hour follow up sessions). Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is a systematic and rigorous course that was developed more than 35 years ago by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD to help individuals learn to take better care of themselves by understanding the mind-body connection and mobilizing their own inner resources for coping, growing, and healing. Two physicians who are trained in Mindfulness techniques will facilitate this event with Scott. About Scott: Scott MacGregor is a licensed clinical therapist and stress reduction educator with over fifteen years of meditation practice including mindfulness. He has trained under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at UMASS Medical School's Center for Mindfulness. Preventing Burnout & Promoting Wellness for our Medical Community

Research shows that an average of 1 in 3 doctors suffer from symptomatic burnout on any given day and burnout is the #1 threat to a physician’s medical career.

WCMS is bringing in an experienced speaker who is well-versed in this topic, to share tools to prevent and address burnout. WCMS’ first two Burnout-Proof Retreats in 2015 and 2016 were highly successful and attendees asked us to continue this important work. CME will be offered.
