November 5•ADK Benefit Performance

PACIFICAChoreography Kumu Hula Noenoelani Zuttermeister LewisComposer Kenny Endo

Dancers Aileen Ballesteros, Megumi Chibana, Ariana Demery, Joan Hori, Yu Fen Huang,

Liana Lewis, Kirstin Santana, Kekeha Solis, Remi A. Tokunaga, Kelsey Uyeda

Pacifica incorporates percussion instruments from Japan and Hawai‘i. Traditionally hula is performed to poetry, but here dancers perform with pū‘ili to describe the sounds of the rain, ipu to describe wind,

and ‘ulī ‘ulī to describe the ocean. The sounds of these Hawaiian instruments are joined in concert with taiko and shinobue (bamboo

flute). The dancers are students in Music/Dance 413 class at UHM.

This collaboration is supported in part by the Mayor’s Office on Culture and the Arts (MOCA).

YAMAMBA (Wandering Mountain Spirit)

Choreography Betsy Fisher (dancers)Chizuko Endo (musicians)

Composer Chizuko EndoMaskmaker Chizuko Endo

Dancers (in order of appearance) Megen Garcia, Dayna ChunYamamba is a female spirit who journeys endlessly through the mountains. She represents truth, freedom, and eternal rebirth.

When the full moon rises and snow begins to fall, a young pilgrim encounters Yamamba. The (4) katsugi drummers represent forces of

nature and worldly elements. This composition was inspired by a classic Noh play.

WATER SPIRITS (Mizu no Sei)Choreography Onoe Kikunobu / Gertrude Y. Tsutsumi Onoe Kikunobukazu / Howard K. Asao Composer Seiho KineyaCostume Design Kikunobu Dance Co. Inc.Dressers Onoe Kikunobuaki, Hanayagi MiyoshizuCostume Assistant Onoe KikunobufusaDancers Makiko Kuwahara, Emma Majewski, Justine Malek, Arisa Shida, Hepsy Zhang

This dance is an excerpt from Ten to Chi (Heaven and Earth) choreographed by Onoe Kikunobu in 1988. At the premiere, there

were eight dancers; after consulting with Onoe Kikunobu, the choreography was adjusted for five dancers. The manipulation of “sarashi”(long cloth streamers) evokes the movements of water.

VRIKSHA - OUR TREEChoreography Sai Bhatawadekar“Ancient Beginnings” Composer Kenny Endo

Dancers Kapono Aiwohi-Kim, Ting-hsuan Chen, Kristen Johnson, Jennifer Kearns, Sandra Land, Bianca Moise, Kisore Sherreitt

This little story of our own wonderful, resilient trees is inspired by Indian folk and Bollywood dances.

ARAUMIChoreography Betsy Fisher (dancers) Kirstin Pauka (musicians)Composer Kirstin Pauka

Dancers Eden Greenwood, Sakura Imaya, Simone Lai Shinde, Isaac Johnson, Kayla Ueshiro

STEEL RAIN (Tetsu no Ame)Choreography Yukie Shiroma“Rain Tree” Composer Kenny Endo

Dancers Marley Aiu, Sophia Carter, Eden Greenwood, Simone Lai Shinde, Emma Majewski, Stephanie Shimoda,

Corbett J. K. Stern, Aiko Yamashiro, Hepsy Zhang

Composer Kenny EndoStaging Betsy Fisher

The taiko drummers perform mirror imagery through sounds. The first part consists of traditional patterns from classical Japanese

drumming. The second part is a lively mixture of Brazilian rhythms, Tokyo festival music, and improvised “conversation” between the

musicians.

SYMMETRICAL SOUNDSCAPES

CAPRICIOUSChoreography Peiling KaoMusic by Kenny Endo with additional music by Johnny Nash

Dancers Marley Aiu, Kapono Aiwohi-Kim, Alston Albarado, Francisann Camuso, Sophia Carter, Charessa Frye,

Lihau Ichinose, Isaac Johnson, Riho Kanomata, Yulia Kravchenko, Sandra Land, Emma Majewski,

Bianca Moise, Nina Grace Parson, Stephanie Shimoda, Corbett Stern, Tavehi Tafiti, Robin Worley

Capricious is about unpredictability and unsteadiness. It reflects current events and everyday life, when it seems impossible to grasp

what is going on.

This collaboration is supported in part by the Mayor’s Office on Culture and the Arts (MOCA).

Choreography Amy Lynn Schiffner Kent Shinomae

Dancers Dayna Chun, Megan Garcia, Kristen Johnson, Maureen Kearns, Christiana Oshiro

SPIRIT OF RICE

TAIKO DRUM & DANCE: HANA HOU!

Composer Kenny Endo

Thunder evokes both fear and awe and is an incredible sound of nature. The giant drums of Japan come close to resembling those rumbling sounds. This composition is dedicated to all the young

taiko drummers who aspire to be in the new wave of “thunderers.”
