What is ACT-SO?
• Afro-academic Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics
• A yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American high school students.
• A program culminating in a local showcase and, for students who achieve at the highest level, a national competition.
What does ACT-SO hope to accomplish?
• To mobilize the adult community for the promotion of academic and artistic excellence.
• To recognize creative talent and academic achievement.
• To provide and assist students with the necessary skills to establish goals and acquire the confidence and training to make a successful contribution to society.

Business A business plan, a pitch and a visual aid.
Culinary A menu plan and a 2.5 hour demonstration
Humanities A brief written work
Visual Arts A single work and short oral presentation on technique and method
Performing Arts A brief performance
STEM A scientific paper detailing an experiment, a visual aid, and brief oral presentation
ArchitectureShort paper, blueprints, site plan, floor plan, elevations, section of the design, oral presentation, and model
What do we ask of school and other organizations?
• Spread the word about ACT-SO
• Encourage students to get in touch with the NAACP
• Advice and participation is always welcome
• Facility use is always welcome
What do we ask of mentors?
• Subject area knowledge
• Desire to help kids succeed
• Email / text accessibility, within reason
• Ideally, 3 or more in-person sessions per student
What do we ask of judges?
● Academic degree or professional experience in subject matter
● Ability to review written material April 21-26th
● Availability for Showcase April 27th
What’s in it for … students?
● Up to $1200 in local scholarships per student
● Gold winners:
○ expense-paid trip to National
○ Up to $6000 in National scholarships
● Work with experts and professionals in their fields
● Make friends and have fun
● Food
What’s in it for … “BSU”s?
● NAACP support for “BSU” activities
● Monthly “BSU” Leadership Dinners
○ Free dinner for 2 “BSU” reps per school
○ $100 donation to your “BSU” at your first dinner
○ Brief ACT-SO update at each dinner
○ Rest of the program is your own
