MANAWATU / WHANGANUI ANGUS WARD TOUR 2018 1 2 MANAWATU / WHANGANUI ANGUS WARD TOUR 2018

On behalf of the members of the Manawatu /Whanganui Angus Ward, I warmly extend an invitation to attend the annual AngusNZ Ward Tour in this area.

The tour this year incorporates a number of highlights including a rare visit to the Atihau Whanganui Incorporation at Ohakune which has major links in its farming operation to the Angus breed. We have a night in Ohakune at the renown Powderhorn Chateau and Chalets, a night not to be missed, with the tour finishing at Tru-Test Angus Bull Unit outside Palmerston North.

Visit seven well known Angus herds in this area and the historic Merchiston homestead, one of New Zealand’s largest and finest early pioneer homes still retained in it’s original condition.

We hope you will join us on the 18th March 2018 in Palmerston North for the AngusNZ AGM and three days of fun, entertainment, good cattle and conviviality.

Kind Regards, Richard Rowe Chairman Manawatu / Whanganui Angus Ward

ATAHUA FARM LTD

The Dalziell Family have been breeding Angus cattle for over 57 years.

The Stud was founded by the late Verdun and Elsie Dalziell in the late 1950s, based on Mangatoro and Puketutu bloodlines with Te Mania genetics introduced early on, making a significant impact on the herd.

Atahua is run as a family partnership with Alan and Michele, Colin and Louise .

Alan and Michele live on the homeblock, 240 ha at Kiwitea, where the Annual Bull Sale is held in June. Running up to 150 cows and 700 ewes and lambs. Finishing the lambs pre- Christmas 19-20kgs. The lambs from the Apiti Block come to Kiwitea in early January to finish.

Colin runs the 248ha Apiti block of medium to steep hill country, mating 50 stud cows and 2000 ewes and replacements. The cattle are run intensively with the sheep at both properties. At weaning the calves from Apiti go to Kiwitea where all the calves remain in a single bull mob and single heifer mob until 400 day scanning for carcass traits, IMF and Breedplan recorded.

Accurate EBVs are generated by comparing animals run in large contempary groups.

Atahua has been mating yearling heifers since 1980, all drys are culled. Heifers once pregnancy tested go to Apiti from February to July before returning to Kiwitea to calve, fit from marching around the hills!

Breeding principals at Atahua are focused on doing the “Basics Right”. We use EBVs as a tool while keeping a balance between Phenotype and Genotype. This also applies when choosing a sire for use in the herd.

Breeding Cattle is a people business, it is all about trust and building relationships.

The success of our program is reflected in the success of our clients.

We welcome you to ATAHUA. We hope your Tour is enjoyable.

MANAWATU / WHANGANUI ANGUS WARD TOUR 2018 5 4 MANAWATU / WHANGANUI ANGUS WARD TOUR 2018

On behalf of the Rowe family a very warm welcome is extended to all the tour participants.

Merchiston was settled by John and Edith Hammond (current owners great grandparents) in 1879 after riding up the Rangitikei River from York Farm, some 20kms down river. It originally totalled some 12000 acres but blocks were sold off up until the First World War when a major remaining portion was taken for returned servicemen.

138 years of farming by one family has seen it grow into a top performing sheep and beef farm, wintering some 9000SU on the remaining 910 hectares. Our Raetihi property which was purchased in 1991 was sold in 2016 to the Manuka honey industry and facilitated the buyout of a family member.

The Angus stud, founded in 1955, is now run on two properties, at home and at Glencorran, as a satellite herd owned by Mike and Kate Gee Taylor at Rangiwahia. This relationship has worked very well with Merchiston purchasing all the bull calves back at weaning to be incorporated with the home grown Merchiston cattle. This year 400 registered females have been mated and will be reduced to 350 for calving . All the heifers are mated at 13 months and every female is expected to get in-calf and raise a calf every year or she is culled.

The genetics for the herd comes from the world of Angus, this year including some very high performing A.I. sires including - Ascot Hallmark, L.D. Capitalist, Hoffman Power Point, Merchiston Stoker 350, Banquet Katoomba K312, and leading sons of SAV International, Stoker, Merchiston Steakhouse 489, grandsons of Rennylea Edmund and S. Chisum.

We have a program that will not compromise phenotype, but will enhance genetic gain and performance and further keep the type of cattle that will perform in their grass fed environment for our local clients.

Approximately 90 bulls will be sold into the industry this year, nearly all into beef breeding herds in the Manawatu, Rangitikei and Whanganui region. We offer a three year guarantee on all the bulls as well as a 24 hour replacement policy on any bull breakdowns.

We hope you enjoy your visit to the historic Merchiston and have an enjoyable tour.

MERCHISTON ESTATE

ATIHAU-WHANGANUI INCORPORATION

Atihau Whanganui Incorporation (AWHI)

AWHI was established in 1970, with the purpose of resuming the 42,000 hectares of land vested into the Aotea Maori Land Council by Whanganui Maori. Today we have 32,500ha under our management with 21,300ha being effective. The ineffective land is either protected under Nga Whanua Rahui or managed, either under Horizons regional council, in forestry production, or used for Manuka honey production.

We winter 160,000SU made up of 75,000 ewes and 4,000 breeding cows. All cattle bred are finished within our system and 300-400 trading cattle are bought in seasonally. About 80% of lambs born are finished internally. We also run a 650-cow dairy farm and have an Apiary team running 2,400 hives.

The 9 sheep and beef farms are operated as individual businesses, with planned symbiotic transfers between properties. They range from flat land surrounding Ohakune to steep hill country with the highest point being 800m we go down to 50m at the Whanganui River. Our farming strategy is focusing on increasing production whilst maintaining cost, increasing the value of products sold, and reducing our impact on the environment.

The farms have had Angus as the base breed for the beef cow herd for many years, and following a recent genetic review within

the team there was no question that this should be continued. With our bull selection we decided to put more focus on the Angus pure indices and IMF%, aligning with our value-add strategy. Notwithstanding the importance of structural soundness, low birth weight, good growth rates and mature cow weight.

We look forward to welcoming the Angus NZ ward conference to our properties in March 2018 and showcasing what we do to you.

Ranui Angus was established in 1950 and is now being managed by the third, Lindsay Johnstone. Ranui has now been established at Karamu for over 38 years and until 2016 was solely managed by Lin Johnstone. In July 2016 Lindsay moved to Karamu to assist Lin with running the property.

Currently Ranui calves 150 registered females as well as 30 recips. At weaning all bull calves from Ranui & Ranui W will be run together at Karamu. Ranui holds two sales

each year - a 2 year Bull sale and a Spring sale which consists of yearling bulls and surplus yearling heifers.

We lamb 2000 ewes of which 150 are a South Hampshire ewes with their rams being sold as terminal sires. All other lambs are finished and exported to Holland under the Kumanu brand.

The steeper country has been planted in forestry to preserve it from slippage and to protect the waterways.

Ranui W was established in 1961 by Lin Johnstone in Te Puke. In June 1989 the herd was re-established at its present location – Rangitatau Trust, Wanganui and changed ownership in 2000 to Lindsay & Maria Johnstone

This new location meant the cattle had to adjust to hill country, high altitude - 1800ft, high rainfall - 70in and snow.

The Ranui W herd is run under commercial conditions on hill country as part of an intensive farming structure. The cattle are run in conjunction with an intensive sheep programme. All stock are continually monitored on performance and through environmental pressure.

Currently:

• We calve down 140 registered females.

• At weaning all bull calves are now moved to Karamu.

• We trade between 130 - 150 R2 steers (used for pasture management)

• Lambing 3000 ewes and finishing 2000 lambs which are exported to Holland under the Kumanu brand.

• We are re-establishing my grandfather’s herd of White Herefords. - All White Hereford bull calves are sold to the dairy industry.

• We also run a hunting and a long range shooting venture.

Ranui and Ranui W’s philosophy is to produce structurally sound cattle with fertility and longevity. Therefore mating yearling heifers and selecting on structural soundness - (feet and legs) is a vital part of our selection process, as well as using EBV’s.

RANUI W WAIRERE

The present owner’s grandfather came to the farm were the Wairere stud was to eventuate in the 1890s.

In 1936 the Wairere Angus stud started, when Owen Lander registered the first progeny of the animals he had purchased from the Ngawaka stud at Masterton. In 1966 a shipment of 34 cows was bought from the South Island’s Heathfield stud, owned by Robert Fraser, (the grandfather of James, Stern stud) and were airlifted to Wanganui, then trucked to Wairere.

Originally, stock were sold through paddock sales, but when Taranaki breeders combined to have a sale held centrally in Stratford, Owen decided to join the group and sell through this venue. Most sales in those days were yearling sales and when he thought he had a bull worthy to go, he would take them to sell at the Dannevirke sale – the equivalent to today’s National Sale.

When illness prevented Owen from continuing, Cedric took over the Angus stud. In 1988 we held our first on farm sale. We sell 20 to 25, 2 year old bulls through the home bullring in June. One of our sale highlights was winning the Unled Champion Angus bull at the Beef Expo/National Bull sale with a homebred bull.

Wairere has used AB since the mid 1960’s and we used Beefplan until Breedplan began with weight gain recording. When ultrasound scanning became available in

1991 we were one of the first New Zealand herds scanned as we saw it as an avenue to assess the meat producing attributes of the animals we were breeding. We scan both our bulls and our heifers, for eye muscle, fat and intramuscular fat (marbling). Now, with the ability to test with I50K we also use this as an aid to selection.

After DNA testing, the herd is now free of carriers and suspects for the defects that are currently able to be tested for.

In 2009 Cedric’s son Paul joined him on the farm to continue Wairere Angus.

Location: 12 km south of Hawera, South Taranaki. 5 km from the coast, One hour from Wanganui.

Size of property: 284 hectares - 95 hectares dedicated to the Angus stud and fattening lambs, 40.5 hectares to grazing dairy replacement heifers for our 259 hectare dairy farm. The remainder is steep river gullies which graze sheep and are used in drought times for the Angus.

Soil type: A sedimentary papa clay base overlaid with Egmont loam.

Rainfall: 1200-1500 mm per year

Three generations in Angus. n Larry Sherriff founded “Kowhiwhi”,

Taihape, 1926. n Philson founded “Pine Park” in 1974. n Edward has now been running the stud

since 2004.

Pine Park Stud was run at Kowhiwhi from 1978, with bulls selling at the Taihape Beef Breeders Sale for 24 years. On-farm auctions at Pine Park started in 2002 and September sales in 2016.

The Pine Park Angus Stud runs in conjunction with seven sheep breeds. Commercially orientated, no soft options and no individual preference given. There are 210 mated, registered females run on a separate 287 hectare block, mostly on hill country, except when calving, until AI servicing is completed. Two year heifers are calved.

Our bull market is increasing rapidly. Our client base is spread throughout the lower two thirds of the North Island. In 2017, 80

2yr and 20 1yr bulls were sold for breeding. Our management concentration is on producing bulls for commercial clients that will thrive, shift and grow on, rather than chasing the stud market.

Key sires for 2018 sales: Matauri Outlier J045, Goldwyn G07, Goldwyn H817, Merchiston Exclusive, PA Ranch House, Stern Laphroaig, Spotlite.

Seven sheep breeds: FE Tolerant Coopworths, FET Romney x Coopworth, Texel x Coopworth, Suffolk, Suftex, Texel x Poll Dorset, Suffolk x Texel/Poll Dorset.

Sell throughout NZ this includes sales to several Angus breeders.

Ngaputahi Angus was established in 1999 with females purchased from dispersal sales. Original emphasis was on structure, docility, durability and fertility. Features we have added include the ability to get in calf, calve unassisted every year from a 15 month old heifer and longevity (only culled when failed to rear a calf or have to be removed from winter rotation due to poor condition).

While still adhering to these core values we are now putting major emphasis on carcase traits that will see the Ngaputahi herd lead the Angus breed into the future.

Recently embryos and semen from

overseas (particularly Rennylea) have been purchased which are enhancing our herd for valuable carcase traits. Our main objective is to have all progeny meeting and exceeding current and future market requirements at 20 months. i.e. the ability to kill 300-340kg with optimal fat covers and high marbling scores while retaining top eating quality standards.

NGAPUTAHI TRU-TEST ANGUS BULL UNIT

After a break of a few years the bull unit was reinstated to supplement the numbers being sold at the National sale. After searching for a suitable property Guy Sargent found Dave Wright’s. Dave and the property have proved to be a wonderful find and we thought you might like to know the person who brings the bulls out for you, a little better.

“I have been in the stock & station industry for 35 years. I started with FCDC in Feilding, as a stock clerk, where I had a year in the office, and then went on the road in Feilding.

After having been through many mergers with Crown farmers, Dalgety Crown and Elders, I started with Affco as sole buyer in the Manawatu. In 1995 I started my own company, Wright Livestock Ltd.

Both Jeanette & I were bought up on farms, myself in Sanson, from where I went on to own 200 acres in Stanway, in the Feilding area. Jeanette’s family still farm in the South Otago area. With my business getting busier, and Jeanette working in Palmerston

North as an Inspector in the New Zealand Police, we decided to move closer to town where we are now. We bought 50 acres of bare land at Newbury, 10 minutes from Palmerston North, where we built a new home two years ago. I have always liked the Angus breed, and have bought and sold many Angus steers and heifers throughout the North Island over the years.

I have a daughter, Emma, who’s an accountant in Tauranga, two sons who are in the stock industry, Sam in Hamilton, and Ben in Feilding, both working for PGG Wrightson. Jeanette has a son, Tom, who is 12 years old currently attending Huntley School in Marton, Tom thinks he would quite like to be an agent as well one day, it clearly runs in the family.

Guy Sargent asked Jeanette and myself, whether we would be interested in running the bull unit here at Newbury three years ago. The rest is history. We really enjoy having the bulls and turning them out for the national sale in May.”
