Dear Members and Friends of Sacred Heart Parish,This summer we were blessed to undertake the much-needed repair on our church, work and carethat has been in the planning stages for some time now, because This is Our Home.

Consider for a moment the countless number of people who have worshipped here at Sacred Heartand celebrated the sacraments with us over the years.

If you can, try and add up the number of hours offered by members of our parish family to welcomeand evangelize newcomers, proclaim the Gospel in word and song, prepare young people for the reception of sacraments, assist with the distribution of Holy Communion both to those at Mass andthose elsewhere due to illness, and the many ways we share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Consider the tremendous amount of time and energy spent reaching out to those in need throughour social outreach and Christian service ministries. Think of the “worker bees”, folks who serve inliturgical ministries at Mass, help with the day-to-day operation of the parish, and who never say “no”to a request when the need arises.

Prayer is the engine behind it all. Through prayer, we are able to further our mission and engageothers as disciples to love God and neighbor as Jesus taught.

As we strive to be disciples, good stewardship is certainly a disciple’s response. It is not about payingbills and taking up collections. Stewardship is about doing the work of Christ and utilizing our manyresources to fulfill this mission.

We have the responsibility to continue to be the light and hope in our world today. We can have animpact in our local community. Now, our energies need to focus on evangelizing that communitywith programing, staffing, services, and facilities to welcome and grow new disciples and involve ourpeople in meeting the varying needs of others.

Thank you for your generosity, prayers, and commitment to Sacred Heart Parish.

With Peace and Prayers,

Deacon Sam Basta Pastoral Coordinator

Notes to Financial Statement:

[1] Every year, the parish and school operating funds budget and transfer an amount to the parish and school capital funds. This recognizes the necessity to put aside substantial money for major maintenance and repair needs as good stewards of ourfacility-related resources.

[2] The Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) rebate is an important funding source for the parish capital fund. From the 2018 ACAeffort, we received a rebate of $33,510. Making and fulfilling your ACA pledge made this possible.

[3] The interest from our parish general savings account with the archdiocese is an important funding source for the parishcapital fund and is included here. Also included are direct donations to the capital fund made through our offering envelopeand online giving systems.

[4] The 4 in 1 Capital Campaign kicked into high gear during October 2018 and so far has received payments of over $1 million on pledges of over $2 million. Expenditures for the church project will occur during the spring, summer and fall of2019 and will be reported in the 2019-20 fiscal year.

[5] At the 2019 School Auction in February, $129,886 was raised through Fund-A-Need to update the Primary School restrooms. Expenditures for that project will occur during the summer of 2019 and will be reported in the 2019-20 fiscal year.

[6] During the summer of 2018, monies were spent to update and renovate the Middle School public student restrooms whichalso included creating two private teacher restrooms.

[7] During the summer of 2018, the school purchased some new classroom furniture and the church sacristy floor/carpet wasreplaced. The latter project involved removing the old asbestos-containing flooring which always adds greatly to the cost.

Dear Sacred Heart Community,For the past year-and-a-half, we have been working on writing a self-study of our school in preparationfor our accreditation visit and review by the Western Catholic Educational Association in February of2020. Every six years, we go through this formal process of writing a self-study and having a visitingteam of teachers and administrators from other Catholic schools visit our school and write a reportabout what they read, saw, and heard.

The most important part of this process, though, is that it is intended to support an ongoing focuson self-review and improvement, not just every six years, but each year. At Sacred Heart School, wehave embraced this growth mindset.

There are important traditions at our school that have been around as long as anyone here can remember, like the 8th grade “Clap Out” at the end of their last day of school before graduation, theShoe Liturgy in support of Treehouse, and Field Day in May. These events, and others, are an importantpart of the fabric of who we are as a community. Of course, the tradition at the heart of our schoolis our Catholic Faith.

But we are a community rooted in tradition, not one that is tied down by it. Our teachers, staff, andadministrators are continually looking for ways to improve the education, moral guidance, and spiritualformation we provide to our students and to improve the operations of our school in ways that enhance learning and make the lives of our community members better. Among many other improvements, in the six years since our last accreditation we have added a school counselor to ourstaff, adopted new reading, writing, and math programs, added the Accelerated Reader program to our curriculum, begun offering NET Ministries retreats to our middle school students, and addedcoding, robotics, and other technology programs.

Of course, the innovation and growth that has taken place at our school over the last six years, as well as the sixty years before that, is due in no small part to the support of our community. The financial donations, volunteer service, and prayers that we have received over that time make it possible for our school community to continually strive for excellence.

In gratitude,

David Burroughs School Principal
