SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL
Directed by Adam Hester
Shakespeare’s hilarious and brilliantly constructed farce, The Merry Wives of Windsor, finally comes to the Abilene Shakespeare Festival. Adam Hester has reimagined this piece as a variety show capturing current social and political themes through the lens of Saturday Night Live. Imagining that Mistress Ford and Mistress Page have fallen for him, the fat knight Sir John Falstaff decides to seduce them both, as much for their husbands’ money as for their personal charms. Wise to the old rogue’s tricks, the women turn the tables on him with a series of humiliating assignations and a very damp, extremely smelly laundry basket.

Directed by Gary Varner
Gary Varner brings an exciting new take on Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice using five actors to play all the roles, except for Shylock, the antagonist and tragic character (played by Adam Hester) at the center of the drama. This uncompromising production explores the tense relationship and prejudices between those that have, and those that don’t. Dark in its humor and romantic hijinks, The Merchant Of Venice takes audiences on a journey of love, mercy and justice.

CORNERSTONE MUSICAL
Set against the background of a changing America between 1950 and 1990, this truly original musical sheds a heart-warming light on the power of family. With a cast of only two people, John & Jen is a tour-de-force, taking them from playful childhood, through awkward adolescence, and far beyond. Audiences will find themselves uplifted by this sentimental gem, perfect for anyone who values the love, connection, and commitment of family.

WINTER COMEDY
Steel Magnolias is a hilarious and heart-warming play set in a Louisiana beauty shop. It follows the hopes, dreams, triumphs and tragedies of six colorful characters and inspired the
1989 film which starred Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine and Dolly Parton. It’s a story exploring the bond between a mother and daughter, and friendships of those who feel like family. When tragedy strikes, however, the women pull together in this play about life, laughter, love, loss, and the inner strength that helps us go on.

Inspired by a real event and featuring the Grammy-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Broadway’s Bright Star tells a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and ’40s. When literary editor Alice Murphy meets a young soldier just home from World War II, he awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past – and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives. The story unfolds as a rich tapestry of deep emotion, beautiful melodies and powerfully moving performances. An uplifting theatrical journey that holds you tight in its grasp, Bright Star is as refreshingly genuine as it is daringly hopeful.
