WEST LAKE STEM JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 2018-2019 INFORMATION

ATTENDANCE POLICY District Attendance Procedures are as follows:

1. A parent may excuse up to seven (7) days of absences within a school year. Subsequent absences are considered excessive and may require a doctor’s note to excuse.

2. After five (5) days of unexcused absences within a school year, the school will mail the student and parent a Truancy Letter asking for the parents’ help with their student’s attendance and warning of consequences for further truancy.

3. After ten (10) days of unexcused absences within a school year, the school will mail the student and parent a Habitual Truancy Notice. The Habitual Truancy Notice requires the student and parents to appear at a pre-court hearing (students under the age of 14) or a truancy mediation meeting (students age 14 and over).

4. Students in grades 9-12 are subject to Granite School District’s Citizenship Policy, which states that students with two (2) or more unexcused absences may not receive higher than a “0” in citizenship. Granite District policy requires all students to maintain a 2.0 CPA (Citizenship Point Average) in order to graduate from high school. Excessive absences may jeopardize a student’s ability to graduate from high school and/or participate in special programs such as athletics or drivers education.

5. Additionally, Granite District can make a referral to Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) for educational neglect if a student is absent, without good cause, for more than ten (10) consecutive school days or more than 1/16 of the school period in accordance with Utah Code 78A-6-319

BACKPACKS Backpacks, bags, and blankets are not allowed in classrooms or in the hallways. Students will place bags, backpacks, or blankets in their locker upon arrival to school. BICYCLE RACK The bicycle rack is located on the west side of the building. Bikes should be locked up. West Lake STEM assumes no liability for bicycles brought to school. Students and parents should be aware that skateboards, rollerblades, scooters, and the like may not be ridden on school property at any time. BULLYING AND OTHER SIMILAR CONDUCT District policies do not allow for unsafe conduct. For example, District policies prohibit threats or acts of violence; real or look-alike weapons; explosive or flammable materials; gang activity; criminal behavior; destruction or damage to property; willful disobedience or defiance; and possession of illegal drugs, alcohol, or other prohibited substances. Bullying, cyberbullying, hazing, and other similar conduct are prohibited. Generally, this type of conduct includes an intent to cause distress or harm; involves a relationship where there is an imbalance of power or strength; and includes repeated acts (or one big act) of violence, intimidation, humiliation, or social isolation. Bullying and other similar conduct can be physical, verbal, or written. It can come in the form of social pressure, criticism, or disrespectful treatment. It can also look like intentionally excluding others from an activity. It may be used as retaliation against another person, which is also prohibited. This type of conduct may be obvious or it may be subtle, and it can include convincing another person to commit the prohibited actions or even agree to be the victim of the treatment. Bullying and other similar types of conduct can also be considered discrimination or harassment if the conduct is based on a person’s race, gender, or some other personal characteristic. Reporting and Correcting If you are treated in the ways described above or you see another person being treated that way, please report it as soon as possible. There are many ways to make a report:

• You can talk to or email your principal, teacher, or another employee at the school; • You can call or text the District Safety Hotline - Phone: (801) 481-7199, Text: (801) 664-2929; • You can use the SafeUT application on your phone or your parent’s phone; • You or your parents can report to the District by calling the School Accountability Department:

(385) 646-4510;

• You or your parents can report to the District by calling the Educational Equity Department: (385) 646-4205;

• You or your parents can report to the Office for Civil Rights, Region VIII, U.S. Department of Education, Federal Building, Suite 310, 1244 Speer Boulevard, Denver, Colorado 80204.

Administrators will investigate all reports, make corrections, and work to prevent further misbehavior. Issues will be addressed at the lowest possible level. Students involved in bullying, cyberbullying, hazing, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, or other similar conduct may receive discipline including parent/guardian conferences, suspension/expulsion, referral to law enforcement, placement outside the school, and/or other discipline that is appropriate. This policy covers conduct occurring at school and conduct outside of school if it affects the school environment. For more information about these subjects, please contact the District Compliance Office by calling (385) 646-4009. CELL PHONES Within the school, cell phones should be used responsibly and not disrupt the learning environment. They may not be used to record video or take photographs without the express permission of the teacher. Students must follow any teacher or staff directions concerning phones. A visible student ID badge is required for any cell phone use. Phones may be confiscated if used contrary to this policy. The school assumes no responsibility for lost, stolen, damaged phones or other electronic devices. CONFISCATED ITEMS Items deemed by school personnel to be disruptive to the learning environment or feelings of safety among students will be confiscated. Items may be confiscated by any staff member at West Lake STEM Junior High. Any item that is confiscated by a staff member will be returned to parents. Please note that any confiscated items remaining in the office by June 30, 2019 will be donated to charity.

DRESS STANDARDS 1. West Lake STEM expects students to dress for success. If students fail to meet the dress standards, they

will be asked to change into school-provided clothing/apparel that meets dress code standards. Students who choose not to follow the dress code will have parents notified and may be sent home until proper attire is obtained. The administration reserves the right to modify the dress code as needed to maintain an environment conducive to learning and preserve the safety among all students.

2. Clothing must not detract from the learning environment. Any item, dress, behavior, or appearance that causes a disruption to the educational atmosphere of the classroom or the school is prohibited.

3. Clothing or apparel that displays or suggests lewd images or content, tobacco, alcoholic beverages, drugs/controlled substances, or guns/weapons are not permitted.

4. Any clothing that promotes gangs is not permitted, including: • Solid red or solid navy blue shirts without graphic designs • Hats, gloves, hair nets, and doo rags • Bandanas of any color, whether worn or carried • Any chains (chain belts, oversized chained necklaces, etc.) • Belt buckles with Old English script • Dressing color on color (red top/red pants, blue top/blue pants, black top/black pants). • The display of certain numbers identified as restricted by administration • Sports jerseys (unless it is a team for which the student plays) • Additional items may be restricted by administration according to current recommendation by

the Metro Gang Task Force

BOTTOMS 5. Pants, shorts, overalls, and skirts need to ride at the natural waist so that the underclothing (e.g.

underwear, gym shorts) is not visible. 6. Pant cuffs may not be pegged using elastic bands, or cuffed tighter than the natural width of the pant

leg. Skirts, dresses, and shorts cover at minimum half of the thigh. 7. Pants with large slits, tears, or see-through panels over this same exposed area of the thigh are

restricted. Slits in dresses or skirts should not extend above mid-thigh. Pajama bottoms are not allowed.

ACCESSORIES 8. Chains, sharp jewelry, and spikes are not allowed at school. No hats, gloves, or sunglasses may be

worn in the building. These items should be kept in the locker. 9. Beaded necklaces and bandanas are restricted in schools as per recommendation of the Metro Gang

Task Force.

SHOES 10. Students must wear proper shoes at all times: no slippers will be permitted. Colored shoelaces are

restricted.

TOPS 11. All tops must have sleeves that cover the shoulder completely. Tops may not be or have sheer or see-

through panels. No tank tops or spaghetti straps are permitted unless worn WITH a t-shirt or top that meets the dress code. The style of clothing must be modest enough to cover all underwear, bra straps and cleavage. The length of the tops should be long enough to tuck in and/or cover the waistline of the pants or skirt (no bare stomachs), even when arms are raised above the head. All tops must be worn on the right side (not inside out).

PHYSICAL EDUCATION 12. Clothing for P.E. and Dance will be determined by those teachers.

DRUGS & ALCOHOL The illegal use, possession, distribution, association, or sale of alcohol, drugs, or drug paraphernalia on school grounds or within 1,000 feet of the school is prohibited. Students who violate this policy will be referred to law enforcement and the Granite School District for violation of the district’s Drug and Alcohol Policy. FEES, FINES, AND REFUNDS Student fees are exacted from students for the purpose of maintaining educational programs. In addition to general registration fees, students will be notified of class-specific fees (such as art, etc.) by the individual teachers. Fee waivers do not waive optional fees such as student yearbooks.

Fines and fees carry over from year to year in Granite School District. Fines can be assessed on unreturned or damaged books or Chromebooks or other school materials. Unpaid fines and fees can prevent students from participating in end-of-year activities.

HALLS Students are welcome into the gymnasium and the library at 7:00 a.m. and then are allowed elsewhere in the building beginning at 7:42 a.m. Students must leave the building by 3:00 p.m. (except when the student is in a supervised activity with a staff member present).

During class time, students must have a valid hall pass to be in the halls. Hall passes will only be issued to students wearing a visible student ID badge. Hall passes are limited during the first 10 minutes of each class and the last 10 minutes of each class.

ILLNESS If a student becomes ill or is injured while at school, the student must report to a staff member immediately. If the injury or illness requires attention beyond that which can be provided by the staff member, the staff member will request assistance or give the student a pass to go to the Counseling Center where he or she will be checked out of school as soon as a parent or guardian can be contacted. Students are not to leave school without school/parent permission and a street pass issued by an administrator or other office staff.

LANGUAGE Students, faculty, and patrons use positive language at West Lake STEM. The use of foul, abusive, or swearing language is prohibited. LOCKERS Lockers are school property, and the school retains the right to search lockers at any time. Students use lockers at

their own risk. Students are permitted to use lockers for their convenience and are responsible for their care. Please don’t slam lockers or place stickers on or inside them. Students should not place personal locks on the lockers as they will be cut off. Sharing lockers or putting items in a locker that is not your own is not allowed. We strongly recommend that students help protect their belongings by not telling anyone, including friends, their combination. Surprise locker checks will be done randomly and at least once a month. If a student has problems getting into his or her locker, he or she must fill out the locker work order on the school website (westlakestem.org), and the custodian will make the needed repair. There is a charge for locker combination changes or for more than one request for the combination. Locker damages will be subject to a fine. LOSS OF PERSONAL PROPERTY West Lake STEM does not assume responsibility for lost or damaged personal property. LUNCH AND BREAKFAST INFORMATION Breakfast will be served free of charge to all students in their Mustang Room class to begin each school day. School lunch is available for students at an estimated cost of $1.65. When paying lunch money, students should turn in their sealed lunch money envelopes to the main office (not the cafeteria) before 10:00 am to be credited for that school day. Alternately, students may pay online at paypams.com. Students should remember their lunch PINs and not share them with other students. Free or reduced-price lunches are available by state application. These forms are available on our website at westlakestem.org. LUNCH PROCEDURES There are two lunch periods. Each student’s lunch time is determined by his or her 3rd period class. Students sit in the order they arrive. Food is to be eaten in the cafeteria. A student may not leave school campus during lunch unless the student’s parent or guardian coordinates the check out through the counseling office.

MAKE-UP WORK AND HOMEWORK REQUESTS Students who are absent for any reason are required to make up work missed in each class. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain all missed work upon returning to school. The work is expected to be completed in a timely fashion as defined by the teachers. If a student will be absent more than three consecutive days, a request for homework can be made through the Attendance Office. PUBLIC DISPLAY OF AFFECTION (PDA) Being overly affectionate in school creates an environment that is not conducive to concentration and learning. Therefore, students should refrain from inappropriate, intimate behaviors on campus or at school-related events or activities. Public displays of affection (i.e. hugging, kissing, etc.) are not appropriate. SAFE WALKING ROUTE TO SCHOOL Main walking routes, as well as areas of safety concerns, for families of walking students at West Lake STEM Junior High are outlined below. Please also refer to the school webpage for this interactive safe walking route:

• When walking to school, walk towards, and use the following major access routes to West Lake Junior High: Christy Avenue (for those walking from the West), Tess Avenue (for those walking from the Northeast of the school), 3100 South, 3450 West, and 3500 South.

• Only use clearly marked pedestrian cross walks when crossing any street. • If you live in the area west of Bangerter Highway use the pedestrian overpass that crosses Bangerter

Highway at 3100 South. DO NOT cross Bangerter Highway at 3500 South. • Streets that are of major concern to walking students are Bangerter Highway, 3600 West, 3200 West and

2700 West. These are major streets for West Valley City. Please use extreme caution when walking along and crossing these streets. Only cross these streets at intersections that are clearly marked for pedestrians to cross.

SCHOOL SAFETY POLICY Acts of criminal behavior that place any person in imminent danger are prohibited in school, on school grounds, to and from school, at school-sanctioned activities, when students are being transported in vehicles dispatched by the district, or in other locations where such behavior threatens or does harm to the school, school property, or persons associated with the school. Students who violate the school safety policy will always be referred to law enforcement for legal action, and suspended to the district for administrative discipline which can remove the student from the school for up to one year. Violations of the School Safety Policy include, but are not limited to:

• Assault, aggravated assault • Any form of gang activity or behavior • Any type of criminal behavior • Arson • Sexual harassment (as well as other forms of harassment) • Hazing • Burglary, aggravated burglary • Vandalism, graffiti, destruction, or defacement of school property • Possession, control, actual or threatened use of a real, look-alike, or pretend weapon • Possession, distribution or selling of illegal substances • Any act involving the use of physical force or the threatened use of force against life or property

regardless of intent • Willful disobedience or persistent defiance of authority • Anything that may place any person(s) in imminent danger • Student acts of frequent or flagrant willful disobedience, defiance of proper authority, or disruptive

behavior Both School & District administrators will follow due process as outlined in the written School Safety Policy.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY Allegations of sexual harassment will be investigated each time they are reported. Anyone being sexually harassed should report such to parents/guardians, administration, counselors, teachers, or police. Any form of sexual harassment by staff or students, including any inappropriate verbal, written, or physical conduct, is strictly prohibited. Copies of this policy are available at the front office. SNOW When it snows, students will please leave the snow on the ground. TARDY POLICY Students are expected to arrive on time to school and to each class. West Lake STEM encourages and rewards students for being early to class and present each day. After multiple tardies, students will receive tiered consequences that include loss of CRAZY points, reduction of citizenship grade, contracts, calls home, lunch detentions, counselor or administrator conferences, and overnight suspensions. TECHNOLOGY AGREEMENT The use of technology can be valuable for a student's education. Use of district owned technology and school Internet access is a privilege, which may be authorized as well as withdrawn. Students are expected to be aware of and abide by the following:

• Personal contact information may not be entered on Internet sites open to public access. This includes student address, phone numbers, personal e-mail addresses and other personal information.

• Students do not have an expectation of privacy in files, disks, documents, e-mail, etc., which have been used or created with district equipment.

• Students are prohibited from (but not limited to): • Accessing, storing, or creating offensive, profane, or pornographic files/software/applications • Plagiarizing works or violating copyrights or trademarks • Damaging, altering, or modifying district owned hardware or software • Attempting to bypass computer security • Downloading and using non-approved software

• Harming, defaming, harassing, or otherwise cyberbullying ANY individuals • Unauthorized use during class time

• Students may use school Internet access only when authorized. Disciplinary actions will be taken pursuant to this agreement (e.g. loss of access to equipment, suspension, law enforcement involvement, etc.).

VENDING MACHINES Vending machines are provided for students to purchase snacks and bottled water. Students are not to use the machines during class time, between classes, or be late to class after lunch as a result of using the machines. Vending machines are available during lunch. VISITORS Parents and guardians are invited and encouraged to visit or volunteer at West Lake STEM. To prevent disruptions to the teaching and learning, we do not allow other family members, friends, or other visitors to attend classes with our students. All visitors are required to report to the front office and obtain a visitor’s pass. YEARBOOKS Yearbooks are available to purchase at registration and throughout the year. They will cost $20.00 per book. We have a time set aside during the last week of school for yearbook signing, but if students have outstanding fees or fines, they will not receive their books until the last day of school and will miss the yearbook signing.
