Tourism grant to bring big audiences to Upper Hunter

Image: Funding for the design of an aviation centre at Scone airport and seating at White Park was announced recently by Member for the Upper Hunter Michael Johnsen and Member for New England Barnaby Joyce with Upper Hunter Shire Mayor Wayne Bedggood and Ross Pay.

Upper Hunter Shire Council has welcomed a quarter of a million dollars in two grants for tourism infrastructure announced recently in Scone. Council is receiving a grant of $124,360 towards seating at White Park in Scone and a $171,400 project towards undertaking detailed design for a proposed new aviation centre in Scone.

The grants came from the Tourism Demand-Driver Infrastructure (TDDI) program, a Commonwealth funded initiative administered by the State Government to support tourism projects that drive demand and increase local tourism expenditure.

Jazz at the BelmoreScone’s Belmore Hotel presents “The Admiral’s Own New Orleans Band” on Saturday March 24 in conjunction with the Bengalla Warbirds Over Scone event. The Royal Australian Navy Band is a prestigious unit of the Australian Defence Force, and is one of Australia’s premier military ensembles. Cash boost for Nelson BayTaylor Martin MLC has announced $70,000 in funding under the Tourism Demand Driver Infrastructure program for the Nelson Bay Public Space program. “This funding from the NSW Government Department of Industry will be invaluable in stimulating the visitor economy in and around Nelson Bay,” Mayor Ryan Palmer said. “It will help us drive demand, improve quality and increase tourism expenditure in our beautiful town. The public domain works are just part of what will fall in line with the Nelson Bay Next campaign.”

1st birthday for Garden OrganicsSingleton Council celebrated the one year anniversary of the Garden Organics service by giving away another load of compost. Council’s waste team recently gave away 1,000 native plant seedlings and 200 bags of compost in less than an hour, and the next giveaway is in direct response to Singleton’s enthusiasm for green living.

Council’s hugely popular compost bins will also be available again for the sale price of $20.

Singleton teamed up with Maitland and Cessnock councils and Solo Resource Recovery to introduce the green bin service in March last year.

Since then, Singleton has collected 2,400 tonnes of organics waste that otherwise would have gone to landfi ll.

SIX DAYS OF CUTTING ACTION: Free entry for spectators at the National Cutting Horse Association National Finals from 19 – 24 March.

Tamworth’s Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre is bustling with activity, the National Cutting Horse Association National Finals being staged from March 19 - 24 and then a quick turnaround for the venue which then hosts the Australian Appaloosa Association National Show from March 28 to April 1. National shows, breeders’ congresses and sales are also scheduled for April.

Water charges refl ect higher usageFollowing a hot, very dry summer some Upper Hunter Shire residents, particularly in Scone, are concerned at their most recent quarterly water account. Over the last few days Council has conducted initial investigations into these concerns including checking Council’s infrastructure, water meter read records and billing systems. This has indicated the water supply system is working correctly and the water accounts are being accurately charged. In particular the new meters that are progressively being installed are more accurate than some of the meters they are replacing, which were in some cases undercharging. There is no issue with the water pressure being too high for the capacity of the water meters. The recent review of water accounts found many have used more water than last summer.

Water meter test waivedUpper Hunter Shire Council is reminding residents that they can always seek a review of their water account if they believe their recorded usage is unusually high or that they have been charged incorrectly. Council is waiving the $175 fee normally charged for a water meter test for this fi nancial year (until 30 June 2018). Mayor Wayne Bedggood said the Council had made the decision to make it easier for ratepayers who believe they are being charged for water they have not used, to confi rm that meters are working properly.

In a further demonstration of Singleton Council’s reinvigorated approach to risk management, General Manager Jason Linnane has been appointed to the Board of Management of Statewide Mutual. Statewide Mutual is Australia’s largest local government self-insurance pool with 118 member councils, including Singleton, and works with NSW Councils to help reduce their exposure to risk. Mr Linnane will replace long-serving member and Lake Macquarie City Council General Manager Brian Bell on the Board. New airline route for NewcastleRegional NSW is set to welcome more interstate visitors with FlyPelican announcing a new direct route to Newcastle from Adelaide. From March 2018, Newcastle Airport will begin an Adelaide direct service, also giving the people of the Hunter a gateway to South Australia’s signifi cant commercial hub. FlyPelican is offering the service three times a week, with over 480 seats available, with the potential to add more fl ights as demand grows.

‘Wild Card’ at Muswellbrook Race ClubMuswellbrook Race Club is set to host the ‘Wild Card’ meeting of the Country Championships on Easter Sunday 1 April 2018. Horses that run in one of the preceding regional races, but are yet to qualify for the fi nal in Sydney on Saturday 7 April 2018, will have the opportunity to contest the $50,000 prizemoney on offer for the coveted two remaining places in the Country Championships fi nal. It’s a family-friendly race day with plenty of entertainment for the kids or why not reserve a table for up to six people in the Parade Ring Pavilion with a yummy platter to share. The 2017 winner of the Wildcard was Pelerin trained by Cody Morgan. Gates open at noon and entry is free.

The skies will be aliveA full day of adventure is on the cards when the Bengalla Warbirds Over Scone airshow takes place on Sunday 25 March.Leave the car at home and jump on the shuttle bus to Bengalla Warbirds Over Scone.

It will run in a loop from 8.45am to 10.45am picking up at the Stafford Street Scott Memorial Hospital bus stop, the corner of Liverpool and Kelly Streets, Scone Railway Station and then out to the airport. The return service will be every half hour from 2pm to 4pm from Bunnan Road. Passengers can simply pay in cash on the day and cost is $4 each way for adults and children over 13 years and $4 return for seniors and kids aged 4-12 years. No need to book, just fl ag them down.
